expectation values: what can quantum computers actually do?

quantum computing is an emerging technology that has been experiencing significant hype. however, we still do not know when (or whether) it will live up to our expectations. in this presentation, i will explain what quantum computers are and how they work, and survey the field's progress in both hardware and software. i will demystify what quantum computers will (and will not) be able to do, and how our society stands to benefit from them.

about the speaker:

dr. olivia di matteo is an assistant professor in the electrical and computer engineering department at ubc, and the tier 2 canada research chair in quantum software and algorithms. she holds an hbsc in mathematical physics from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , and a phd in physics (quantum information) from the university of waterloo and institute for quantum computing. prior to joining ubc, she was a quantum information science associate at triumf (canada's particle accelerator centre), and a quantum computing educator and researcher at the toronto-based quantum startup xanadu. at ubc she leads the quantum software and algorithms research lab, whose work focuses on developing quantum programming tools and using them to solve physics problems. she is dedicated to making quantum computing accessible to everyone through the development of open-source software and freely-available educational resources.

dr. martha dowsley will be presenting as part of the natural resources management seminar series.

dr. dowsley's main research focus is the interaction of culture and the natural environment. many projects in her sshrc-funded research group include partnerships with indigenous communities. theoretical frameworks typically involve common property theory, complexity, and biocultural conservation to examine social-ecological systems. 

dr. dowsley holds a phd in geography from mcgill university and master of forest conservation and bachelor of science from the university of toronto.

indigenous cultural celebration night - women's volleyball

the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 thunderwolves are pleased to announce the 3rd annual indigenous cultural celebration night presented by the lakehead achievement program, which will be held on saturday, november 23rd, 2024.

lakehead’s women’s volleyball team will face off against the uottawa gee-gees at 6 pm in the thunderdome.

as part of the celebration, the thunderwolves women’s volleyball team will wear special uniforms designed by joseph lane nindishnikaz, a member of couchiching first nation located just outside of fort frances on and who resides in thunder bay, ontario, nindoonjiba.

the jerseys will be sold by auction with proceeds going to black indigenous and people of colour (bipoc) athletic scholarships at lakehead.

in designing these unique uniforms, the artist collaborative with team members to discuss philosophies, values, and culture, from which inspiration was drawn for the design.

elder beatrice twance-hynes from biigtigong nishnaabeg first nation will open the event, with ogden school choir singing o’canada in ojibway. drumming and dancing by the thunder mountain singers and dancers will take place immediately after the conclusion of the women’s game. please stick around for this celebration of culture.
