this year, the event also will start to honour outstanding community initiatives that demonstrate the power of collaboration. three initiatives and their partners will be named at the reception.

"but, they just don't know exactly what the field of research entails. the information that our expert speakers will present at this conference will teach guests about some very important elements in the field." schraft stresses that biotechnology is more than just dna and genetic engineering. it is a field of study that uses living organisms, or cellular and bio-molecular processes, to make new products, solve problems, or provide new methods of production.

(september 19, 2007 - thunder bay, on) 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 's department of psychology today announced that its phd in clinical psychology, the first of three phd programs offered at lakehead, has recently received accreditation from the canadian psychological association (cpa). this landmark news - in concert with $1 million in multi-institutional collaborative funding from the canada foundation for innovation (cfi) for the development of the centre for biological timing and cognition (cbtc) over the next five years - has positioned the department for steady academic and research growth. "the cpa accreditation coupled with the cfi funding is a synergistic relationship," says dr. gary boire, dean of graduate studies at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 . the accreditation application process is very involved. to receive accreditation from the cpa, institutions must meet 11 minimum criteria that adhere to national standards. among other features, the cpa focuses on faculty, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , programming, mandatory curriculum organization, and facilities. ultimately, the accreditation keeps lakehead competitive with other canadian universities, future student applications, and subsequent student success rates upon graduation. a growing number of employers prefer to hire graduates of accredited programs, and the accreditation will provide the university's clinical psychology phd 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 more and better opportunities for training placements and subsequent career possibilities. the initial accreditation period will last until october 2009, and may be renewed at that time.

the biorhythmic properties of a number of human systems and their implications for human conditions influenced by time-dependent biological and cognitive systems will be researched within the centre. examples of such conditions include, but are not limited to seasonal and non seasonal depression, migraine, disordered eating, attention, asperger's, dyslexia, and aging. "more often, people are noticing a relationship between seasonal changes and changes in their emotional patterns and their thought patterns," says dr. michael wesner, director of experimental/applied psychology at lakehead. "though some indicators are modest, others tend to be quite drastic - to the point that they interfere with a person's ability to function effectively in their everyday lives. our goal is to identify, monitor, and further research these indicators."

prior to january 1, dr. fedderson will spend four weeks at the orillia campus to ensure a smooth transition. during this time, he will familiarize himself with program, faculty, and staff requirements; campus operations; and the community of orillia.

dr. fred gilbert, president of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 says, "the campus dean, orillia campus is a particularly sensitive post due to the strategic importance of the campus in southern ontario and its contribution to the overall growth of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 . the campus dean will be working very closely with the community as we develop the permanent location for the university in orillia, and with 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 's administration and staff as he continues the academic program development work that has been initiated by his colleagues."

dr. fedderson obtained an honours b. a. from the university of toronto in 1975, an m. a. in english from the university of toronto in 1977, and a ph.d. in english from york university in 1985.

he joined the department of english at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 in 1989 and served as its chair between 1998 and 2001. he also served as a visiting professor at yunnan university in china in 1985 and at gifu university for education and languages in japan in 1995. he has a passion for teaching, and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 recognized his contributions in 1998, naming him a distinguished instructor. during his tenure as chair of english, and later as acting dean and then dean of the faculty of social sciences and humanities from 2001 and 2006, he championed, through the academic and strategic planning processes, a variety of initiatives to enhance teaching and learning at the university.

an active researcher, he has published extensively on rhetorical theory and post-secondary pedagogy, and continues his work on shakespearean adaptation with his long-standing collaborator, dr j. m. richardson. he has also been active in the community and has served on a variety of boards such as magnus theatre and the north of superior film association.

his interest in creating learning environments in which learners can realize their potential led him to accept the invitation of confederation college--a nationally recognized centre of excellence for accessible post-secondary education--to become its vice president, academic and student services in 2006. in that role, he led the development of the college's new academic plan and its learning commons.

dr. fedderson is delighted to be returning to lakehead in the role of orillia campus' dean. "what first attracted me to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 was its reputation for learner-centred education. when i joined the university in 1989, i had the immense good fortune to be surrounded by scholars--teachers and researchers--who were really committed to helping 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 succeed. i have always believed that when it comes to teaching and learning lakehead is a very special place. in some ways, that reputation has been kept too close to the chest. i think it's time to share with others what lakehead does so well, and especially with the people of orillia who for a very long time had been looking to establish a university in their community. this is a great opportunity and an exciting alignment of interests."

(september 17, 2007 - thunder bay, on) today, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , faculty, and staff gathered in front of the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 student union's new bike shack facility to celebrate the grand opening of the multi-purpose building - a clean, green, and healthy initiative on various fronts.

"this building is securely monitored, and 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ' annual fees allow them to store their bikes here," says richard longtin, president of the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 student union (lusu). "these days, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 are becoming more and more concerned with the issue of climate change. 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 feel positive about the facility; it encourages a healthy lifestyle and contributes to reducing the effects of climate change by biking to and from home and school." the storage area of the facility comprises 1766 square feet of space, capable of storing up to 172 student bicycles.
although the building's main purpose is to store bicycles, the 780 square foot auxiliary portion of the facility will be used as a service and repair area for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ' bicycles. however, through discussions among lusu and drs. anthony gillies and bryan poulin, some undergraduate research may also benefit from this portion of the building as it will also be used to test energy conservation and air quality - including humidity control. it is providing various undergraduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 in the faculties of engineering and business the opportunity to apply knowledge and research from their respective fields of study. here, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 are working under the supervision of gillies and poulin to perfect heat-recovery and air quality methods.

the innovative component of the project stems from the growing need to provide safe, healthy, and cost-efficient conditions for occupants of northern homes. "houses in the north are plagued with mould, mildew, and moisture problems," says poulin, associate professor in the faculty of business administration. "overall, the hope is to develop and test efficient house building technology," adds gillies, chair and associate professor of civil engineering. "building materials are finally catching up with ideas and needs, and if this plan progresses as we hope it does, the systems that we have invented may have the potential to improve and enhance housing in the north."

both gillies and poulin note the tremendous support the project has received from various manufacturers across the region. "corporations have donated time, materials, and expertise," says poulin. "we must be on to something." with the help of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 's innovation management office, gillies and poulin will apply for an invention patent, and hope to finalize and announce all details by the end of the year.

(september 11, 2007 --thunder bay, on) many scientists consider climate change to be the most serious threat facing the world today. environment north, the food security research network, and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 student union (lusu) are hosting climate change: solving it together ii. rotary clubs of thunder bay, the chronicle journal, and bay credit union are sponsoring the event, which takes place at the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 outpost on saturday, september 22. research on the effects of climate change in northwestern ontario will be made available to the public and to 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , along with possibilities for mitigating its effects. the conference includes a local food lunch and displays by local food producers.

mark kelley - "making a difference in our communities"
cbc's mark kelley will present the campus' first lecture for the 2007-2008 academic year. the lecture is open to all 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , faculty, and staff. this season on the national, kelley introduced his new series, seven, in which he spent seven days living the lives and exploring the daily challenges of various people in canadian communities. "the premise of kelley's show and presentation is appropriate to changes challenges choices," says burnett. "a great deal of his material engages his audience in these concepts, so we are extremely honoured to welcome him to our campus for a much anticipated lecture and discussion." kelley has won two gemini awards for best host or interviewer in a news information program.
