with this award, dr. chen will receive $140,000 in funding for his research project entitled productivity and diversity in boreal mixedwoods. the project focuses on the sustainable management of boreal forest mixedwoods as a crucial element in the long-term health of both the ecosystem and the forestry economy - throughout ontario and across canada. "we need to investigate how forest management can improve forest productivity and simultaneously enhance biological diversity and carbon sequestration, the process by which forest ecosystems absorb co2 and release o2 to produce biomass," chen explains. "once this is determined, we will be in a better position to develop more innovative strategies to manage ontario's boreal forest in this ever changing environment."

(july 18, 2008 - thunder bay, on) as organized under the leadership of dr. aicheng chen, canada research chair in material and environmental chemistry, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 recently hosted a one-day symposium on lignin research and development. the symposium provided dr. chen and dr. justin jiang, associate professor of chemistry, the opportunity to discuss their naturalsciences and engineering research council of canada (nserc) strategic project with leaders, scientists, and engineers from industry partners including the goodyear tire & rubber company, abitibibowater, and fpinnovations.

lignin is a by-product that is produced by pulp and paper mills. although it is typically burned to produce heat and energy, researchers are now trying to find a means to convert it to value-added products such as chemical feed stocks. this would provide a solution to the depletion of non-renewable fossil resources, promote canadian leadership in green chemistry and a bio-based economy, aid in the development of novel technologies for the economic utilization of lignin, and benefit the pulp and paper industry as a whole.

"the minister's 2005 council report of forest sector competitiveness identified at least 12 forest industry mills at risk of closure in ontario alone," recalls dr. chen. "the canadian pulp and paper industry must identify new value-added products in order to stay competitive, and this event allowed us to discuss some possibilities with our valued industry partners."

some northern ontario communities have already been devastated by mill closures as thousands of jobs have been lost over the past six years. should all 12 at-risk mills close, the province could lose up to 38,000 direct and indirect jobs and $1 billion in provincial tax revenue.

the braun building will remain closed until further notice.

the fire area in the east wing of the braun building will be isolated so that remediation of the remaining building areas can begin. this remediation will commence in all common areas, with the exception of the building's east wing.

(july 16, 2008 - thunder bay, on) 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 's braun building complex and school of nursing building have remained closed due to a fire that took place on monday evening, july 14, 2008.

the fire that originated on the second floor of the braun building is still under investigation by the office of the fire marshall, and the cause is yet to be determined.

based on information provided by the fire marshall's office, the school of nursing building will re-open at 8:00 a.m. on thursday, july 17.

the braun building is closed and will remain closed until further notice. this decision was made based on discussion with the fire marshall's office and the disaster recovery team, sent by the university's insurance companies.

upon preliminary inspection of the braun building, it was discovered that potentially hazardous material resulting from the fire is spread throughout the building. once an analysis of health and safety issues is completed, a protocol for access will be communicated.

since the fire occurred, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 administration has been working diligently to find temporary workstations for staff, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , and faculty who have been displaced. it is the university's priority to resume normal business as soon as possible.

(july 15, 2008 - thunder bay, on) the braun building complex and the school of nursing building were closed on tuesday, july 15, due to a fire that took place on monday evening, july 14, 2008.

lakehead university has not determined the extent of the damage as access to the building is restricted. lakehead will share information about access to the building through regular communications bulletins.

this is what we know to date:

access to the braun building is closed until monday, july 21 due to health and safety issues (e.g. air quality, lack of fire alarms, etc.).

the school of nursing building may be opened prior to monday, july 21 if health and safety issues can be adequately addressed in the school of nursing. a communications bulletin will be issued on wednesday afternoon on the status of access to this building.

there are many unanswered questions regarding the fire - such as who is being displaced and for how long, the extent of the damage, and the time and cost of repairs. the answers to these and other questions will be shared with the university community as soon as they are known.

all employees with offices in the buildings concerned should contact their immediate supervisor for further instructions.

architects have recently been hired to turn the "functional program" for phase i into the schematic design for the first building. if lakehead is to stay on schedule with its plan to open the campus in the fall of 2010, the schematic design must be completed by mid-august.

members of the integrated project team and the architects would like to review these materials with interested parties as the schematic design is developed. this is a critical opportunity for members of the university community to review the work that has been done to date and to provide input into the next stage of the design process.
