the inaugural group of lakehead ontario master naturalist 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 gathered before embarking on their first field experience in scout valley.

an aquatic biologist, a physical education student, and a gardener are all part of the diverse group of people participating in the ontario master naturalist program, which kicked off on may 2. the first of its kind in canada, the program is a partnership between 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s orillia campus and ontario nature, and is passionately spearheaded by local award-winning naturalist bob bowles. 

“we are thrilled to be partnering with ontario nature to launch this new master naturalist program,” said kim fedderson, dean & vice-provost of the orillia campus. “bob continues to open doors for lakehead, this time with ontario nature, which has resulted in this exceptional opportunity for members of our community.”

in his opening statements to the group saturday morning, fedderson emphasized the communal aspect of the program and how it fits perfectly into lakehead orillia’s goals of being a community-focused campus.

following fedderson’s opening address, the group began their first module, in which they learned about simcoe county’s unique landscapes. each week is focused on a different subject area in order to give the naturalists a well-rounded education.

“each of the learning modules focuses on a different topic – from local plant species, insects and reptiles – to birds, wetlands and landscapes,” said bowles. “participants will be able to broaden their knowledge base and fast-track their level of expertise.”

in order to put their in-class knowledge to the test, each session includes a field work segment. for the first week, the group headed to scout valley to enjoy a prime example of simcoe county’s beautiful landscapes. the participants were eager to hike the trails and their passion for nature really came through once they were out in their element. one participant, a private estate gardener from newmarket, even completed the hike in a cast and crutches.

there was an overwhelming and infectious feeling of excitement among the group that did not falter throughout the day. a sense of community was evident as the participants got to know each other.

“it is such a great feeling to be surrounded by so many like-minded people,” said rhonda, an outdoor educator from parry sound.

her sentiment was echoed by the entire group, who all seemed to feel at home in the program. the enthusiasm and excitement of both the participants and the educators is sure to make the first ontario master naturalist program a major success.

an award-winning filmmaker and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 professor of history will present a special screening of his new documentary, pulp friction: people, places and the global economy, at the orillia campus on monday, march 9 at 7 pm, as part of the university’s annual research & innovation week.

in pulp friction, dr. ron harpelle, who teaches at lakehead’s thunder bay campus, introduces audiences to three communities heavily reliant on pulp mills. the film begins with the community of terrace bay, ontario, and goes on to examine the challenges facing communities in finland and uruguay that are also dependent on a single industry.

“this is a rare opportunity for people to view a new documentary about the interesting forces of globalization on different communities, meet the filmmaker, and have a discussion about his global research,” said lakehead orillia’s dr. michael stevenson, associate professor with the departments of interdisciplinary studies and history.

members of the public are also invited to learn about student and faculty research at the orillia campus during research & innovation week by attending lunchtime (11:30 am to 1 pm) panel discussions on monday and tuesday and undergraduate research day on wednesday. the research day event takes place from 11 am to 1 pm in the learning commons and will highlight student research projects at the university.

jenna cook of orillia is the recipient of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s athlete-of-the-month award for her outstanding performance and leadership with the orillia campus women’s basketball team. 

the plastics protect & holliswealth athletic achievement award is presented to a lakehead orillia athlete each month, from october to march, to recognize exemplary leadership, sportsmanship and athletic performance.

cook is a member of lakehead’s newly established women’s basketball team, which wrapped up their season by competing at an ontario colleges athletic association (ocaa) tournament at the university of toronto – mississauga. as the newest team to join the tournament, cook did an outstanding job of leading the team’s strong showing, and was among the tournament leaders in points, assists, and steals. 

“she is what can be called a triple-double threat, with the ability to score 10+ points, get 10+ assists, and rebound the ball 10+ times in a single game,” said her coach, curtis fogel. “she has stood above the rest in talent, commitment, competitiveness, and on-court leadership.”

cook, who, as a high school student, played basketball with the odcvi blues, is now in her fourth year of lakehead’s concurrent education program. 

in addition to honouring the efforts of individual athletes, the award provides $500 to support the athlete’s team or club activities. 

the award was established under the direction of former olympic and canadian championship athlete, michelle cowell, who represents the award donor, plastics protect & holliswealth – benson kearley ifg.

the establishment of a new research centre for sustainable communities will be celebrated at an official launch on thursday, march 19 at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s orillia campus. 

the community is invited to attend the event to learn about the new centre and to meet the members of the lakehead orillia faculty who helped establish the research centre, which is focussed on interdisciplinary research that supports sustainable communities.

“i am extremely proud of this accomplishment,” said dr. kim fedderson, dean & vice-provost of the orillia campus. “since our campus opened in 2006, we have been focused on a community-centred approach. this centre will now be a cornerstone for supporting all aspects of community sustainability.”

“the centre is based on three core areas of research,” explains dr. nanda kanavillil, chair of the centre’s management committee and the founding director of the centre. “we will be promoting research in the areas of social justice, political economy and environmental sustainability.” 

the centre was approved by 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 senate last march and its unconventional approach to research, with an emphasis on multi-disciplines and collaboration, will be a catalyst for research funding and community partnerships.

the launch event takes place on thursday, march 19 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm at lakehead’s university avenue campus in the simcoe hall lecture theatre 1022.

“this is an opportunity for community members and representatives of organizations and businesses in the region to learn more about the planned activities of the centre and ways to get involved,” adds dr. kanavillil.

dr. curtis fogel is an associate professor of criminology at lakehead orillia whose research is focused on the intersections of gendered violence, sport and law. his co-presenter is dr. andrea quinlan, currently a postdoctoral fellow at cornell university. her research examines responses to sexual assault and the history of anti-rape activism in canada and the u.s. she is the co-editor of the forthcoming book, sexual violence on canadian university and college campuses.

some of ontario’s leading naturalists met today at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s orillia campus to celebrate the launch of a new ontario master naturalist program (omnp).

the first of its kind in canada, the program is the result of a memorandum of understanding signed by 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and ontario nature. the new partnership will provide the unique opportunity for naturalists and those dedicated to environmental stewardship to become certified as master naturalists. 

award-winning naturalist bob bowles – an avid supporter of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s education and research activities – conceived the program. bowles chairs a steering committee of experts from the region, including representatives from ontario nature and lakehead faculty members that designed the program.

“we are thrilled to be partnering with ontario nature to launch this new master naturalist program,” said dr. kim fedderson, dean & vice-provost of the orillia campus. “bob continues to open doors for lakehead, this time with ontario nature, which has resulted in this exceptional opportunity to members of our community.”

“ontario is blessed with an active group of people who care deeply about the environment,” said caroline schultz, ontario nature’s executive director. “by partnering with lakehead, we will now be able to formally recognize and support these dedicated volunteers.”

the inaugural omnp, to be offered this spring, involves a 6-module course of in-class instruction, fieldwork and volunteer commitment.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 is receiving $2 million to support four new canada research chairs whose important research and work includes the fields of green chemicals, indigenous mental health, fisheries, and human diversity.

lakehead’s new crcs are all tier 2 researchers:

lakehead president and vice-chancellor dr. brian stevenson thanked the federal government for investing in this important research. “i am constantly impressed by the exceptional research being done by our university’s researchers. their work is made even more promising with the support of our funding partners,” dr. stevenson said. 

lakehead’s nine canada research chairs (crcs) aim to achieve research excellence in engineering and the natural sciences, health sciences, humanities, and social sciences. they improve our depth of knowledge and quality of life, strengthen canada's international competitiveness, and help train the next generation of highly skilled people through student supervision, teaching, and the coordination of other researchers' work.

last week the honourable ed holder, minister of state (science and technology) announced 150 new and renewed canada research chairs at 36 postsecondary institutions across the country, including lakehead’s four new crcs.

 “through our government’s updated science, technology and innovation strategy, we are making the record investments necessary to push the boundaries of knowledge, create jobs and opportunities, and improve the quality of life of canadians,” minister holder said.

“our government’s canada research chairs program develops, attracts and retains top talent researchers in canada whose research, in turn, creates long-term social and economic benefits while training the next generation of 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and researchers in canada,” minister holder added.

this $139 million investment, with an additional $7.6 million in infrastructure support provided by the canada foundation for innovation, will help promote and support research and development. 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 is receiving $2 million to assist the following top-tier researchers in their work.

dr. pedram fatehi – chair in green chemicals and processes

dr. pedram fatehi wants to determine how canada’s pulping industry can be more competitive and how the mining and oil industries can be more environmentally friendly while remaining cost effective.

dr. fatehi is an internationally recognized researcher with an outstanding track-record in fundamental and applied research in chemical and environmental engineering, biorefining, and material, colloid and pulp and paper science.

he and his team are collaborating with researchers in various universities and industries to develop processes for producing green chemicals so that pulping, mining and oil processes can become more cost effective and environmentally friendly.

dr. fatehi’s research will lead to the production of green chemicals to substitute oil-based chemicals used in mining and oil industries as well as waste water treatment systems and tailings ponds.

dr. fatehi is an associate professor in chemical engineering at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

dr. christopher mushquash – chair in indigenous mental health and addiction

through his research, dr. christopher mushquash, canada research chair in indigenous mental health and addiction, is identifying culturally and contextually appropriate targets of intervention by examining culture-based and western approaches for addressing mental health difficulties and addiction among indigenous peoples, and then developing evaluation methods.

this approach to research and intervention involves collaborative partnerships. his work is grounded in community and the idea that indigenous understandings of wellness and methods of healing are holistic.

dr. mushquash disseminates knowledge broadly in indigenous communities and in scientific and health care communities, as well as with policy and decision-makers. he also works to increase capacity in indigenous health research through training and mentorship. 

building upon the knowledge that exists within indigenous traditions, languages, histories, and methods of healing, this work will support community-based priorities and efforts at improving the health of indigenous peoples while reducing disparities in mental health and addiction. dr. mushquash is an associate professor in psychology at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and in the division of human sciences at nosm. in addition to his academic appointments, dr. mushquash is a clinical psychologist at dilico anishinabek family care.

dr. michael rennie – chair in freshwater ecology and fisheries

some scientists use test tubes to conduct their experiments. dr. michael rennie uses lakes.

with national and international partners, dr. rennie’s research at the international institute for sustainable development-experimental lakes area provides scientific evidence that informs environmental policies around the world.

using a whole-ecosystem approach to study the effects of pollution, climate change and invasive species, dr. rennie and his collaborators can clearly show how lakes and their fisheries respond to stress, using extensive long-term data sets from pristine lakes to help interpret their findings. 

dr. rennie’s specific interest lies in how fish species respond to environmental stress, and how those responses can ultimately affect population dynamics and ecosystems.

by better understanding how fish respond to ecosystem stress, dr. rennie’s research will provide important information to fisheries managers, and will contribute to whole-ecosystem approaches to support economically and ecologically sustainable fisheries.

dr. matthew tocheri – chair in human origins

as canada research chair in human origins, dr. matt tocheri works to reveal important clues about the relationships of extinct species of humans (called hominins).

his analysis of wrist bones from the controversial hominin species, homo floresienis—the so-called 'hobbits' of human evolution—is widely considered one of the strongest pieces of evidence that these fossil bones represent human origins distinct from our own.

tocheri co-directs continuing excavations on the indonesian island of flores where homo floresiensis was discovered. his work is investigating the timing and nature of the extinction of homo floresiensis, the first arrival of modern humans on flores, and their subsequent transition from a hunting-gathering lifestyle to a farming lifestyle.

understanding human diversity in the past, both biologically and culturally, is key to helping make informed decisions about our species' future and the world we inhabit.
