the krescent program new investigator award is awarded to individuals who have clearly demonstrated excellence during their pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training in kidney disease and provides salary support for up to three years of the faculty appointment at the rank of assistant professor or equivalent at a canadian university. the purpose of this award is to support the investigator in becoming established as a fully independent investigator in the field of kidney disease.

kidney health research grants provide financial support to medical researchers in defraying research operating costs, including the purchase of materials, supplies and equipment and the payment of laboratory assistant. grants are available for one, two or three years. the research must be carried out in canada.

the following services of the sub contractor are required: to conduct an observational study of the thermoregulatory, cardiovascular, and perceptual implications of varying soft armour torso coverage during physical activity under controlled environmental conditions.

ontario is now accepting applications for the 2021-2022 species at risk stewardship program, as part of our ongoing commitment to help protect and recover species at risk and their habitats. the species at risk stewardship program promotes strong environmental stewardship by providing funding for species at risk protection and recovery projects by individuals, communities and groups across the province. 

applications must be received through the transfer payment ontario (tpon) portal by 3:00pm (et) on tuesday, february 9, 2021. all applicants will be required to create a one-key account in order to access tpon. please sign up early; it may take up to 5 business days to be granted access.

the 2021-2022 species at risk stewardship program guidelines and application form can be found by following the links on the transfer payment ontario website: https://www.ontario.ca/page/get-funding-ontario-government. the guidelines are also attached to this email. applicants are asked to carefully read the guidelines before completing and submitting an application form.

the faculty mobility for partnership building program (formerly the faculty mobility program) offered by global affairs canada is now accepting applications.  please note the following deadlines:

    internal deadline:  february 11, 2021

    external deadline:  february 25, 2021

the program provides up to cad 7,000 to teach or conduct research with one (or more) partner institutions in latin america and the caribbean, with the goal of developing new partnerships or building on existing partnerships that will facilitate the elap student mobility program.  a pre-existing mou/exchange agreement is not mandatory.  all funds must be spent by march 31, 2022.

full-time faculty members are eligible to apply.  grant recipients must teach or conduct research for 3 to 8 weeks in the following eligible elap countries:

• caribbean: anguilla, antigua and barbuda, bahamas, barbados, belize, bermuda, british virgin islands, cayman islands, cuba, dominica, dominican republic, grenada, guyana, haiti, jamaica, montserrat, saint kitts and nevis, saint lucia, saint vincent and the grenadines, suriname, trinidad and tobago, turks and caicos;
• central america: costa rica, el salvador, guatemala, honduras, nicaragua, panama;
• north america: mexico;

the public health agency of canada (phac) is pleased to invite eligible organizations to submit a letter of intent (loi) for projects that prevent and address family violence and its health impacts by delivering, testing and supporting diverse health promotion programs and interventions that are tailored to the needs of those who have experienced, are experiencing, or are at-risk of experiencing family violence.

this call for proposals is a two-step process. the first step is the submission of a loi, which provides an overview of the proposed project. applicants whose lois best fit the objectives of this funding opportunity will be invited to move on to the second step by submitting a full proposal.

lois must be submitted by 11:59pm est on january 27, 2021.

food waste

food waste refers to all food that is grown, harvested, processed, manufactured or prepared for human consumption, but never eaten by people. it occurs at all stages of the food supply chain, from farm to plate.

in canada and around the world, food waste continues to increase, resulting in an overuse of our natural resources such as water, soil and land, while contributing excess greenhouse gas emissions to our atmosphere. meanwhile, a growing number of canadians are facing food insecurity.

challenge streams

food waste is a complex issue, and there is no single solution. that is why the food waste reduction challenge will include four complementary innovation streams. we know there are many great innovators out there who have high-impact solutions to tackle food waste throughout our food systems. through the challenge, we want to support innovators to establish and grow their solution in canada.

we are accepting applications for challenge streams a and b until january 18, 2021:

• challenge stream a: business models that prevent food waste
• challenge stream b: business models that divert food waste, food by-products and/or surplus food

the most promising solutions will be selected by an external committee of subject-matter experts. innovators will receive grant funding as well as other benefits to help them succeed.

streams a and b - stages

applicants will move through three stages to compete for the grand prize.

• stage 1 - concept application: challenge streams a and b are launched, and application intake begins on november 19, 2020, lasting until january 18, 2021.
• stage 2 - market demonstration results: beginning in spring 2021, semi-finalists selected in stage 1 will move on to stage 2, where they will need to demonstrate the success of their solutions with an implementation partner in canada over an eight-month period.
• stage 3 - grow and scale in market: at this stage, finalists selected in stage 2 will grow and scale up their solutions in canada over a one-year period starting in spring 2022 and will be competing to be one of the grand prize winners of the challenge.
• the grand prize winners for the food waste reduction challenge – streams a and b will be announced in summer 2023.

this pilot grand challenges icoda covid-19 data science initiative is an open request for grant proposals. the desired outcome is to fund studies that will facilitate research collaboration among researchers to address major covid-19 research questions and reduce the harm of the current covid-19 pandemic, while fostering global, multi-disciplinary collaborations.

proposals may focus on one of a range of covid-19 research areas, including: 1) natural disease history, epidemiology and transmission; 2) vaccines and prophylaxis; 3) infection, prevention and control; 4) therapeutics; 5) clinical management.

the breathing as one - boehringer ingelheim canada/cihr-icrh: copd catalyst grant competition promotes innovative research related to the treatment/quality of life, mechanism of disease, and health care services for copd. catalyst grants are scalable research studies that can be pilot studies, feasibility studies, translational studies, and novel and innovative approaches.

applicants should be creative and think broadly. to this end, submissions to this grant competition should only be made for new project ideas and not the continuation of an existing project.

even though your long-term goals for the project may extend beyond the means and timeline of this grant, within one year, the results of the catalyst projects should enable the development of funding proposals that are eligible for submission to national or international peer-reviewed competitions.

funding available

funding for this competition has been provided by a donation from boehringer ingelheim canada to the lung association's breathing as one campaign for lung research and a partnership with the cihr–icrh. boehringer ingelheim canada is not involved with adjudication or the funding decisions for this competition.

the partnership with canadian institutes of health research (cihr)-institute of circulatory and respiratory health (icrh) increased the total funding amount available for the 2020 competition to $120,000. the maximum amount per grant is $30,000. the funding is for one year and is non-renewable.
