this august, four members from our lab including dr. reznik, dr. radó, amy, and alex attended the canadian semiconductor science and technology conference in montreal.

in her oral presentation, dr. reznik described our work on lead oxide x-ray photoconductive layers for application in direction conversion medical imaging detectors, see image above. dr. radó also did an oral presentation about his work on stress in thick amorphous lead oxide (a-pbo) layers. our two fabulous trainees, amy stieh and alexander alexandrov, did poster presentations, see the images below. amy discussed photo-crystallization in a-pbo and alex talked about x-ray sensitivity of pbo photodetectors.

the summer school of medical imaging (ssmi), jointly hosted by the thunder bay regional health research institute and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s faculty of science and environmental studies, offers a unique research experience that showcases the graduate environment in medical imaging as a prospective career path for undergraduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .
within this program, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and the health research institute provide topical tutorials and a seminar series, and host an end-of-summer research project competition. the program runs from may to september.
“the summer school of medical imaging is a great example of how the health research institute partners with 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 to train and retain our region’s youth,” said dr. alla reznik, canada research chair in physics of molecular imaging, senior scientist at the health research institute, and summer school of medical imaging co-chair for 2019. “in the past, many 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 studying in thunder bay felt that they had to leave the city to pursue education and careers in science. now, our youth are realizing they can have a top-quality education and career in the medical field — without leaving northwestern ontario.”
the roster for the 2019 edition of the ssmi includes 14 undergraduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , ryerson university, and the university of calgary. they’ll be working closely with scientists on research projects related to the medical imaging field, such as low-dose x-ray and positron emission mammography imaging, novel tools in magnetic resonance imaging and targeted cancer diagnostics.
the ssmi provides undergraduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 with a paid research position. 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 work under the supervision of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 -health research institute scientists to complete projects in their field of interest. these projects are related to the scientist’s research theme and often make real contributions to advancements in medical imaging technologies. 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 who are successful in obtaining summer employment work in their supervisor’s lab and must attend the weekly summer student seminar series to gain exposure to a variety of research areas and topics in the field of medical imaging.
social events such as barbeques, hiking and various sports activities are also organized as part of the summer schedule to encourage networking between 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .

abstract

while polycrystalline lead oxide (poly-pbo) is known to be one of the most promising photoconductors for utilization in x-ray detectors, its major performance parameters such as charge yield and mobility-lifetime product (μτ) are still not well established and require further investigation. combining the conventional x-ray induced photocurrent and pulse height spectroscopy techniques we examine the x-ray photogeneration and recombination processes in poly-pbo. the measurements indicate that the amount of energy required to release a single electron-hole pair w± (inverse of charge yield) strongly depends on the applied electric field and at 10 v/μm reaches ~20 ev/ehp. fitting the measured pulse height spectra with the hecht formula provided μτ for holes and electrons to be 4.1 × 10−8 cm2/v and 10−9 cm2/v, respectively. obtained μτ values combined with recently reported mobility values of charge carriers in pbo suggest a new direction towards an improvement of pbo technology by incorporation of frisch grid or x-ray transistor architectures.

abstract

lead oxide (pbo) is one of the most promising materials for application in direct conversion medical imaging x-ray detectors. despite its high potential, conventional polycrystalline pbo layers deposited with the basic thermal evaporation method are not yet mature for practical use in x-ray imaging; indeed, they are highly porous, unstable at ambient conditions, and substoichiometric. in order to combat the above issues with pbo, we advance the basic evaporation process with simultaneous energetic ion bombardment of the growing film. we show that tuning the ion-assisted thermal deposition not only solves the structural problems of poly-pbo, but also enables the growth of a new noncrystalline polymorphic form of the material—amorphous pbo (a-pbo). in contrast to poly-pbo, novel a-pbo layers grown by ion-assisted thermal deposition are stable at ambient conditions. structural and morphological analysis confirms that a-pbo is stoichiometric and free of detectable voids, which suggests higher bulk x-ray stopping power than porous poly-pbo.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 launched more than research and innovation week at the opening ceremony held on friday, march 3. a joint venture between 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and the thunder bay regional health research institute, called radialis, was also launched, and so was the new centre for innovation and entrepreneurship research. radialis is partnering with the centre for imaging technology commercialization (cimtec), to design, manufacture, and sell advanced imaging systems from thunder bay. a high-resolution positron emission mammography (pem) system for low-dose imaging of breast cancer will be the first product from radialis.

“we launched radialis medical to commercialize our pem technology and to bring it to clinical trials at the thunder bay regional health sciences centre, which will help save lives and put thunder bay on the cutting edge of healthcare,” said dr. alla reznik, radialis’ chief scientific officer.  more information

congratulations to harutyun poladyan, phd student from biotechnology,  for winning the first place in the graduate poster competition at the graduate research conference. the poster titled “novel solid state block detector for applications in positron emission mammography (pem) reported the results of his research project under supervision of dr. alla reznik.

this graduate student research conference 2017 was held in 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 agora during research and innovation week in march 2017. this conference was organised by the faculty of graduate studies. at this year’s conference, more than 20 posters were presented by the graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛  from various departments of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .
