the department of history in conjunction with the alumni association will be handing out its 2014 departmental awards to celebrate the accomplishments of our distinguished graduates. we will also be recognizing an organization and individual with our departmental community partnership awards.

honoured this year will be elinor barr (ba 1974, hba 1989), mark chochla (ba 1967, hba 1975), beth boegh, and the city of thunder bay archives.

the department of history and the thunder bay branch of the canadian international council are pleased to host john foster who will speak on “petroleum and the world’s hot spots: is there a connection?"

speakers bio: john foster is a canadian expert on the world oil scene who has worked for the world bank, inter-american development bank, and two oil companies (bp and petro-canada) in more than thirty countries in asia, africa and latin america. born in london england, he graduated from cambridge university in economics and law, and served in the royal navy (suez).

each fall the department of history, lake superior scottish regiment, the hmcs griffon, and the thunder bay branch of the canadian international council partners to hold a free symposium focusing on issues relating to the canadian forces.

this year's symposium is focused on the first world war, with a particular emphasis on northwestern ontario. it will be held on the 8 november at the  o’kelly armoury (317 park avenue) between 0830 and 1500, with a reception in the officer's mess and a tour of the thunder bay military museum on the 7 november.

about the speaker: judith marshall is a popular educator, activist and writer who has been engaged in southern africa solidarity politics for more than 40 years. marshall was a founding member of the toronto committee for the liberation of southern africa and worked in the ministry of education for eight years soon after mozambique's independence in 1975. recently retired after twenty years in united steelworkers global affairs department, where she continued to build solidarity links with southern africa, marshall is now an associate fellow at cerlac where she does research and writing on themes of mining and corporate power.

the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 history society will be hosting the first annual history year end formal dinner on friday, march 28th. this is open to all history 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and professors. the cost is $15.00 a person. tickets will be available outside the outpost thursday, march 13th 12pm-2pm; wednesday, march 19th 10am-2pm; and thursday, march 20th 12pm-2pm.

dinner is from 6pm-9pm upstairs in the outpost. there is a concert downstairs at 9pm that we are welcome to attend for free. dinner is buffet style and the menu is: parmesan chicken, oven roast potatoes, vegetables, vegetarian pasta, garden salad, dinner rolls, dessert squares.

history for lunch on tuesday 25 february will feature prof. beverly soloway who will be speaking on “cooking up culture: food in black canadian history.”

history for lunch is a lecture series sponsored by the department of history and black history month is on the menu in february. the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 community is invited to attend presentations that take place on tuesdays and thursdays from noon to 1 pm.  this is an opportunity to put a bit of history in your diet and for members of the department of history to showcase their research. more information about the sessions can be found on the department of history website, and on our facebook page.

speakers bios: joyce fergus-moore, b.a., comm. dip., m.div., is a retired united church of canada minister. peter fergus-moore, b.a., oct, is a retired adult literacy coordinator from the thunder bay indian friendship centre. they served 3 months with the ecumenical accompaniment program (eappi) of the world council of churches in the occupied territory of palestine from november 2013 to february 2014.

speaker's bio: dalibor mišina is assistant professor in the department of sociology at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 . his research focuses on popular culture and post- conflict societies, post-socialist memory, and transterritorialism. dr. mišina’s book shake, rattle and roll: yugoslav rock music and the poetics of social critique deals with the socio-cultural impact of rock music in former yugoslavia (the book will be available for sale at the event, at the price of $75). for more information, please visit http://misina.ca/.
