this dream team will span multiple disciplines and utilize the new tools of modern biology, with an emphasis on genomics, to attack research questions in a coordinated way. the dream team will have mechanisms for sharing of resources and platforms (knowledge, talent, tools, technologies, etc.) across the team including existing platforms and resources as well as those to be developed, incorporating new methods and technologies into the research groups, and training and networking across the dream team. mechanisms to foster collaborations within and among the dream teams will be employed – an approach that promotes the sharing of information and a goal-oriented focus on measurable milestones of progress.

this funding opportunity will provide support for the development and implementation of spor networks in non-communicable chronic diseases. for the purpose of this opportunity, non-communicable chronic disease is defined as a long-term disease that is not passed from one person to another; it evolves over time, often progressing in severity. although a non-communicable chronic disease may be prevented and can often be controlled, it is rarely cured.

the primary objective of the opportunity will be to translate existing and new knowledge generated by basic biomedical, clinical, and population health research into testing of innovations that can improve clinical science and practice and foster policy changes, leading to transformative and measureable improvements in patient health outcomes, and in efficiency and effectiveness healthcare delivery within five years.

the community development program in the area of resuscitation clinical research will:

  • developing, validating and evaluating interventions that change significant aspects of practice

to achieve these objectives and to add value to the research enterprise, the community development program will:

• possess world-class capacity to address the identified research problem(s), challenge(s), or opportunity(ies);
• build a critical mass of technical and scientific expertise on a national scale to provide research leadership and enhance impact by bringing together a unified group of investigators and other stakeholders;
• identify key knowledge gaps and promote/create national and international collaborations among researchers and with knowledge users to address those gaps in a coherent fashion;
• integrate research and knowledge translation projects into a coherent program which will generate solutions that will be implemented to produce social and economic benefits for canadians;
• actively engage patient representatives in research planning and decision making by including a patient on the executive committee of the community development program and on the steering committees of each of the clinical trials undertaken by the program (if applicable);
• promote and facilitate the sharing of ideas, tools, methods, and resources and the dissemination of research outcomes;
• incorporate a significant training, mentoring, and career development mandate to add value to training opportunities already available, through innovative approaches;

the ehealth innovations initiative (ehii) is a multi-phase initiative that aims to enhance health outcomes and health care delivery, through the implementation, evaluation, and health system scale-up of ehealth innovations that contribute to evidence-based, client-centered, cost-effective solutions. the purpose of ehii is to:

• develop, integrate and evaluate, in collaboration with stakeholders, ehealth innovations that will improve the quality of outcomes and the cost-effectiveness of patient and population-centered care; and
• increase canada’s competitive position in the health-related information and communication technology (ict) industry.

the ehealth initiative will use an integrated science approach that incorporates consideration of ethical, legal and social implications, as well as end users’ perception of the value and usability of the ehealth innovation as it pertains to their care. the evaluation of social impacts of new technologies at a community and health system level will also consider equitably shared benefits so that certain groups are not disadvantaged and risks are proportional to benefits.

this funding opportunity is to create the consortium structure for the canadian epigenetics, environment and health research consortium (ceehrc), one of cihr's roadmap signature initiatives. epigenetics is the study of changes in the regulation of gene activity and expression that are not dependent on alterations in gene sequence. epigenetics provides a compelling model for how environmental influences throughout life can have long-long effects on human health.

a number of dedicated funding opportunities have been launched over the last several years to create the core elements of ceehrc, as required to advance the field of epigenetics in canada and to link it to human health outcomes. among others, these have included the creation of a national epigenomics platform (comprised of several epigenomic mapping centres and epigenomic data coordination centres), innovative catalyst grants to develop transformative new technologies and approaches, fellowship and training programs, and multi-disciplinary team grants exploring gene-environment interactions and the links between epigenetics and human health and disease.

the goal of the current funding opportunity is to establish the national consortium structure that will network together all the previously funded ceehrc components, and expand their reach to the broader health research community in canada and internationally. domestically, this includes linking to other nodes of genome canada's genomics innovation network, as well as additional groups whose activities could inform and further develop the fields of epigenetics and epigenomics. internationally, this consortium is expected to build on canada's leadership role in the international human epigenome consortium (ihec), to expand the international reach and impact of ceehrc.
