nserc's promoscience program offers financial support for organizations working with young canadians to promote an understanding of science and engineering (including mathematics and technology). through promoscience, nserc may award up to $2.75 million each year. organizations may request funds for up to three years at a time.

every year, an independent jury of eminent researchers and intellectuals selects up to five candidates for trudeau fellowships. these candidates hail from all disciplines in the social sciences, the humanities, and the creative arts, and are active in one or more the foundation’s four themes of research. fellows are chosen in light of their leadership qualities, their productivity, their reputation, and above all their track record at imagining and promoting new solutions to major contemporary issues.

since 2009, the foundation has had the option of awarding one fellowship per year to a visiting fellow. the visiting fellowship gives canadian universities the opportunity to host a foreign or canadian academic, artist, or writer for one year or more. in the early years of the program, the foundation alternated awarding the visiting fellowship to an international candidate and a canadian candidate. as of the 2014, the trudeau foundation will consider applications for canadian and international visiting fellows each year. no more than one visiting fellow will be appointed each year.

eligibility criteria

• trudeau fellows are public intellectuals who have demonstrated the capacity to propose creative solutions to important issues. they reach beyond disciplinary boundaries to come up with innovative ideas and they are deeply committed to engaging in public debate.
• candidates must be nominated by a canadian university or other entity whom the foundation has invited to submit a nomination.
• candidates must be canadian citizens or permanent residents or must be legally allowed to reside in canada for the period that they will benefit from the funding.
• candidates must be active in the social sciences and humanities and must work in an area related to one or more of the foundation’s four themes.
• candidates must commit to contributing the equivalent of at least one day a week for an academic term to the foundation’s intellectual leadership. these 15 days of engagement take place during the fellow’s first three years as a fellow. for more information, consult its engagement and residency policy for regular trudeau fellows.

selection criteria

• productivity: within their discipline or field of activity, trudeau fellows have made a significant contribution to the development, enrichment, and dissemination of knowledge. their output is varied and extensive and may include academic publications, public communications, the direction of research teams, student training, and literary or artistic creations in one or more of the foundation’s themes.
• leadership and innovation: trudeau fellows have spearheaded significant advances in their fields of expertise, whether scientific or creative. their work is innovative and they bring new perspectives or approaches to their field.
• communication and engagement: trudeau fellows are experienced and devoted communicators who are adept at capturing the attention of their peers, the public, and the media. they are committed to stimulating interdisciplinary dialogue to fuel their thinking and the work of others, and their communication skills enrich public debate. they play a front-line role in learned societies and professional associations; they are often asked to comment on current affairs and to represent their country at international forums.

trudeau project. trudeau fellows produce a trudeau project during their first three years with the foundation. the project is an initiative that is grounded in one or more the foundation’s four themes and that engages the trudeau community of mentors, fellows, and scholars. examples of projects are an international workshop in the fellow’s area of work; the edition of a collection of papers authored in part by members of the trudeau community; and a bellagio-type working group that tackles a particular policy problem. this list is not exhaustive: fellowship candidates may propose any form of project that would draw on the richness of the trudeau community to address what they see as a compelling lack in the knowledge.

the tvn interdisciplinary fellowship program is unique in going beyond traditional academic and clinical training opportunities within disciplines, offering enriched experiential learning based on the concept of interdisciplinary collaboration. in addition to fellows’ own personal knowledge creation or translation projects, the fellowship program integrates interdisciplinary and patient-focused research and experiential projects and learning in eight modules.

in the winter 2015 competition, four (4) fellowships will be funded with a stipend of $50,000 per year for two years.

to allow for well-rounded interdisciplinary experience for all fellows, the network strives to achieve a wide variety of disciplines among its current cohorts. to achieve this balance between disciplines, the winter 2015 interdisciplinary fellowship program will include up to one (1)  fellow from each of four disciplines:

• health economics
• medicine
• pharmacy/pharmacology
• public or health policy or administration

insight grants proposals are expected to respond to the objectives put forward in the call for proposals for the insight program. the objectives of the insight program are to:

applications to the fiscal year 2014 (fy14) tuberous sclerosis complex research program (tscrp) are being solicited for the assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, defense health program (dhp), by the u.s. army medical research acquisitions activity (usamraa). the tscrp was initiated in 2002 to provide support for research of exceptional scientific merit and to promote innovative research focused on decreasing the clinical impact of tuberous sclerosis complex (tsc). appropriations for the tscrp from fy02 through fy13 totaled $47 million (m). the fy14 appropriation is $6m.

b. fy14 tscrp mission and focus areas

the mission of the fy14 tscrp is to encourage innovative research to improve the lives of individuals with tsc through understanding the pathogenesis and manifestations of tsc and developing improved diagnostic and treatment approaches.

a. program description

applications to the fiscal year 2014 (fy14) neurofibromatosis research program (nfrp) are being solicited by the u.s. army medical research acquisitions activity (usamraa). the nfrp was initiated in 1996 to provide support for research of exceptional scientific merit that promotes the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of neurofibromatosis (nf) including nf type 1 (nf1) and type 2 (nf2) and schwannomatosis. appropriations for the nfrp from fy96 through fy13 totaled $257.85 million (m). the fy14 appropriation is $15m.

b. fy14 nfrp vision and areas of emphasis

the vision of the fy14 nfrp is to decrease the clinical impact of nf. toward this end, the nfrp seeks to support innovative, high-impact research that will foster new directions for and address neglected issues in nf research; sponsor multidisciplinary and multi-institutional collaborations that will bring new perspectives to the field; promote translational and clinical studies to move promising ideas from bench to bedside; and develop a balanced portfolio of meritorious research related to all aspects of nf1, nf2, and schwannomatosis.
