natural resources management

natural resources management is the stewardship of forested public and private landscapes, with the intention of creating a balanced approach to sustainable ecosystem management with regard to many of the social, economic, and environmental challenges which face us now and into the future.

our faculty prepares you to take an active role, either as a forester or an environmental manager, in the sustainability of canada’s most important resources.

you will follow a common curriculum for the first two years of your program, providing you with a background in the biological, social, and operational fundamentals of forestry, and its relationship to our ecosystems. after two years, you will choose to complete either the honours bachelor of science in forestry or the honours bachelor of environmental management.

as a first year faculty of natural resources management student, you will share the same curriculum in both forestry (hbscf) and environmental management (hbscem). this is to gain a broad understanding of natural resource management topics and issues before choosing a specialization in year 3.

you will also be required to complete the non-academic first aid certificate to prepare you for fieldwork courses in your upper years of study.

specialization opportunities

depending on your major, we have a number of elective courses that can be combined to receive a specialization within the faculty of natural resources management. these include:

  • wildlife conservation and management

  • conservation planning and management

  • sustainable land use

  • forest management

  • forest health and protection

  • forest products and marketing


co-op placement

during your undergrad you will have the opportunity to participate in our co-operative education program to gain rewarding experiences in the industry and acquire practical skills that go beyond typical fieldwork and research opportunities.

 

certification

upon graduation from your honours bachelor of environmental management, you will be eligible to receive your environmental professional certification from eco canada. if you decide to pursue the wildlife conservation and management specialization, you will be eligible for accreditation as a certified wildlife biologist by the wildlife society of america.

our honours bachelor of forestry degree is nationally accredited by the canadian forestry accreditation board, meaning you will meet the academic requirements of membership for a number of professional forest associations across canada. upon graduation, you will be eligible to receive your registered professional forester (rpd) designation and become a member of the canadian institute of forestry.

as part of the faculty of natural resources management, our forestry program will provide you with a background in the biological, social and operational fundamentals of forestry and its relationship to our ecosystems. you will gain the business skills, scientific expertise and practical experience needed to solve modern conservation and sustainability challenges.

our honours bachelor of science in forestry shares a common curriculum with the honours bachelor of science in environmental management for the first two years.through a specialization, you will delve deeper into the areas of forest management, forest health and protection, or the emerging area of forest products and marketing.

you will be exposed to the high-tech world of modern forest management through the use of gps/gis technologies, 3-d visualization, remote sensing with satellite imagery and airborne systems including drone (uav) technology, and genetic research.

as part of the faculty of natural resources management, our environmental management program will provide you with a sound understanding of natural processes in environmental ecosystems, including a strong background in forest environments and technical experience using industry-standard geomatics tools. 

our honours bachelor of environmental management shares a common curriculum with the honours bachelor of science in forestry for the first two years. through a specialization, you will delve deeper into the areas of fish and wildlife conservation and management, conservation planning and management, and sustainable land use.

the phd in natural resources management is a research-based program focused on the development of researchers in the field of forest sciences, including, but not limited to the following subject areas:

  • biodiversity in forest environments; conservation biology; evolutionary ecology; forest ecology and ecological processes; forest entomology and pathology; forest fire management and ecology; forest management, economics and operations; forest recreation; forest soils and soil conservation; forest genetics and tree improvement; population and community ecology; remote sensing and photogrammetry; silviculture; sustainable forest management; tree morphology and physiology; watershed ecology, forest hydrology and water quality; wildlife/animal habitat management and conservation; and wood science.

the course-based master’s degree (master’s in forest management) emphasizes professional development in forest management, policy, geomatics, and ecology. the degree entails 4 terms of coursework (16 months).  three terms are on campus and one term, comprised of an internship and field school, is off-campus. the curriculum of this 16-month programme is given below:
