gathering on decolonization and indigenization of veterinary medical curriculum

the university of guelph, ontario veterinary college, and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜  are excited to announce a special gathering focused on decolonization and indigenization of the veterinary medical curriculum will be held on 20 september 2024. 

this interactive and experiential one-day gathering presents an opportunity for members of the university of guelph, ovc, and lakehead university communities and veterinary medical professionals to come together with community members to begin a dialogue around issues of indigenization and decolonization in veterinary medical education. this event will provide an opportunity for us to learn, reflect, and take meaningful steps toward creating a more inclusive and culturally responsive educational environment. 

the keynote speaker will be sheila cote-meek, director of indigenous educational studies program, brock university.

  • date: september 20, 2024 (all day) 
  • format: learning circles to explore key questions led by indigenous facilitators. attendees can participate in person or virtually.
  • closing session: wrap-up with a focus on tangible next steps, individual action, and accountability. 

refreshments and lunch will be provided for those attending in person.  

let us come together to learn, share, and envision a curriculum that reflects indigenous perspectives and knowledge. attendees can participate in person or virtually. once the final agenda is confirmed, information will be sent to registrants.  
  
participants will be limited and offered on a first come first served basis, so please register soon.  


this event is a collaboration between ontario veterinary college and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and sponsored by funding from the university of guelph’s office of diversity and human rights edi enhancement fund.

elder gene nowegejick, will be conducting a sweat lodge ceremony on friday, april 5th, 2024 starting at 3 pm at the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 sweat lodge site. wear loose clothing, such as t-shirts, shorts and long skirts. be sure to bring a towel. participants are encouraged to bring the elder a tobacco offering which is available at issc (uc1007). if you are on your moon time you must not participate in the sweat lodge ceremony or handle ceremonial items.

elder beatrice, is a member of biigtigong nishnaabeg first nation. elder beatrice is a traditional women’s dancer who makes her own regalia. she is a grandmother pipe carrier, a sacred circle facilitator, songwriter, singer and drummer. she shares teachings on hand drumming, the medicine wheel, sacred medicines, and the seven grandfathers teachings.

you are welcome to stop by to visit with elder beatrice in the elders room in the gakina nindinawemaaganag lounge uc1007.
