vianney cupiche, a visiting scholar from mayan intercultural university, will present on bird conservation in the mexican caribe.
ms. cupiche, a visiting scholar from mexico, is certified as an official federal naturalist guide by the tourism secretariat of mexico. since 2011 she has been teaching at the mayan intercultural university of quintana roo, mexico in courses that include ornithology, tourism sustainability, community-based tourism, tourism carrying capacity, and design of interpretative and recreational trails.
thunder bay field naturalists and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 faculty of natural resources management are cooperating in presenting ms. cupiche who will speak on the current situation of bird conservation in the mexican caribe, the strategy of community involvement in bird conservation, and the tourist potential for bird watching, especially in rural localities.

the 100 years of loss mobile exhibition explores the history of the residential school system and traces its legacy to the present. 100 years of loss uses archival and contemporary photographs, works of art, primary documents, and recent research to reveal the histories of first nations, inuit, and métis children who were forcibly removed from their families and institutionalized in residential schools. the distinct features of 100 years of loss are the depth of the historical perspective and the breadth of the information presented. the story begins in the early days of european expansion into north america, and continues up to and including the decades of advocacy and healing efforts by aboriginal peoples, the indian residential schools settlement agreement, the 2008 federal apology to survivors and their families, and the establishment of the truth and reconciliation commission in 2009. one of the greatest strengths of this exhibition is its focus on the legacy of the irs system, and in particular, its enduring impacts on survivors and their descendants, on communities, and on canada as a nation. the exhibition clearly shows the direct links between the residential school system and the contemporary social crises afflicting aboriginal communities across the country. everyone is welcome to attend.
farewell celebration for dr. carney matheson! in june 2018, dr. carney matheson will step down as chair of anthropology to accept the position of director of archaeological science and forensic science at griffith university - nathan campus, australia.

thunder bay has a chance to hear from the young people of la loche saskatchewan, a community that was changed forever by a tragic shooting in 2016. one of the four people who lost their lives was adam wood, a graduate of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 who had recently left thunder bay to start his teaching career in the community.
in a statement to the media, the wood family emphasized:
"rather than looking for someone to blame, or coming up with outsider opinions of reasons why this occurred, we must stop and listen to the voices of la loche. the leaders and members of the community know what types of support and changes are needed. our responsibility as a nation is to listen and respond to create lasting systemic change."
on wednesday, march 28, adam's sister, caitlin wood, will present her master's research dedicated to giving the youth of la loche a chance to be heard. her project demonstrates how research can be both deeply meaningful and a means to individual and community healing.
caitlin provided young people in the community with cameras to take photographs that reflect the positive influences in their lives, what changes they want to see, and what they feel childhood should look like.
consistent with the spirit and methodology of her project, caitlin has brought along jazz moise, a participant in the research and a student from la loche, as a co-presenter.
this event will take place at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 in the school of nursing building, room sn 1015, from 7 to 9:30pm. following the presentation, the floor will be opened to a panel discussion on how we can best listen and respond to the voices of indigenous youth.
