the shad cup is a competition between shads to develop an innovative product and a business plan for the marketing of the product based on a theme. this year the theme is health and wellness. many innovative ideas have come forth to promote these traits in communities across canada. the shads will be presenting their innovations and business plans to a distinguished panel of judges on tuesday, july 26 in atac-5035 at 7 p.m. this event will also be webcast at http://65.39.4.236

the shad valley music ensemble has also had a successful season of concerts. a bonus concert has been planned for wednesday, july 27 at 12:30 p.m. in the agora.

the shad valley open day takes place on thursday, july 28 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the agora. this day is the culmination of the shads' efforts over the past few weeks, with workshop posters, projects displays as well as their shad cup presentations available for review. this is a great chance for the media to find out all that the shads have learned!

international organization names lakehead u professor deputy chief examiner for visual arts

dr. fiona blaikie(thunder bay - july 6, 2005) a 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 professor was recently named deputy chief examiner for the visual arts with the international baccalaureate organization (ibo). dr. fiona blaikie was officially welcomed to the ibo in june, and starts her duties on september 1, 2005.
the ibo aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. the ibo works with schools, governments, and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education. the ibo offers three programs to a wide variety of schools located throughout the world: the diploma program for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 in the final two years of school before university; the middle years program for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 aged 11 to 16; and the primary years program for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 aged 3 to 12.

deputy chief examiners are highly qualified and experienced educational practitioners. as the deputy chief examiner for the visual arts, dr. blaikie will provide support to the chief examiner in providing leadership for a team of examiners in consultation with staff at the ib curriculum and assessment centre (ibca), and may be called upon to act for the chief examiner in his or her absence. dr. blaikie will participate in the preparation of examination papers, assessment criteria, and the marking and/or moderation of candidates' examination material, among other duties. her term with the ibo is for two years.
dr. blaikie is a professor with the faculty of education at lakehead u and the director of the joint doctoral program in educational studies. her research interests include art education, aesthetics and art criticism in the classroom, multiculturalism and gender issues, and curriculum theory.
dr. blaikie also chairs the community arts and heritage education project (cahep), which is designed to enhance accessibility to arts and heritage programming in the community, and makes the work of artists, performers, and the achievements of cultural and historical organizations more visible in thunder bay schools.

some of the brightest high school 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 in canada are participating in shad valley at lakehead, a program geared to develop innovative leaders of tomorrow. the program runs from july 3 to 28, and shads (participants) live in residence throughout the session.

shad valley puts shads through a rigorous academic program with a focus on engineering, entrepreneurship, information technology, medicine, and science. during the month-long program, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 attend presentations on various topics, participate in workshops, and complete projects in different areas.
supported by over 150 supporters, partners, sponsors, and donors, the shad valley program is delivered through the involvement of many people from the university and the local community.

pioneer in aboriginal education celebrates 30 years at lakehead u

(thunder bay - june 30, 2005) on saturday, july 2, a special celebration will take place at the fort william first nation pow-wow to honour professor dolores wawia for her 30 years of pioneering work on aboriginal education at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .
professor wawia accepted the position of teacher counsellor with the native teacher education program at lakehead u on july 1, 1975. this program was the first of its kind in ontario. since that time, she has designed and implemented many courses for lakehead u's faculty of education, and became the first native woman assistant professor with tenure at lakehead u as well as the first elder in residence of an ontario university.
professor wawia's native name is muk kee queh, which means frog lady in ojibway. she is a story teller, and over the years she has visited many schools around the community, sharing her stories with countless 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 . she also hosts a story time session ever third tuesday of the month at the waverley resource library. this session is designed to bring in all cultures to share stories.
professor wawia will be honoured at the fort william first nation pow-wow on mount mckay this canada day weekend. during the morning, there will be a sweatlodge ceremony in the anishnawbe mushkiki lodge. there will be presentations, an honour song and dance, and a feast later in the day. the invocation for the afternoon ceremonies begins at 3 p.m.

lakehead u receives $287,574 in cfi funding to support three new researchers

(thunder bay, june 29, 2005)three 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researchers have received new opportunity funds from the canada foundation for innovation (cfi) totalling $287,574.
dr. matthew boyd, assistant professor with the department of anthropology, received $73,493 for his project "collaborative northern environmental and archaeological research initiative."
dr. david law, assistant professor with the department of biology, received $103,714 for his project "chromatin architecture, epigenetic, biochemical and molecular approaches for systems biology based investigation of gene expression during development and stress in plant cells."
dr. wilson wang, assistant professor with the department of mechanical engineering, received $110,367 for his project "laboratory for intelligent mechatronic systems."
"our faculty continue to excel in all areas of research," says dr. rui wang, vice president (research) at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 . "these three researchers are fine examples of the important work conducted at the university."
the cfi's new opportunities fund enables eligible universities to provide research infrastructure for newly recruited faculty members, in their first full-time academic appointment in canadian degree-granting institutions, so that these researchers can undertake leading-edge research. the fund also enables institutions to recruit new faculty members in the areas of research identified as priorities in their strategic research plans.

(thunder bay-june 28, 2005) 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and confederation college have joined forces to help potential graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 whose first language is not english to meet the language requirements at lakehead u.

dr. fred gilbert, president, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , and mrs. patricia lang, president, confederation college, today signed an articulation agreement which provides potential university graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 with another means to obtain their 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 english language proficiency requirements. 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 who apply to lakehead, and who meet all other program-specific admission requirements except the english language proficiency requirement, will be offered a conditional acceptance until they pass one of the language tests listed in the lakehead u calendar. this list now includes the english for academic purposes program (eap) offered through this agreement.

this 16-week eap and english as a second language program is designed for international 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 with intermediate-level skills in english. 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 in the program are assisted in acquiring the oral and written skills needed for their success in post-secondary studies. previously, this program was for confederation college 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 only. this agreement now allows potential lakehead u international graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to take part in the program.

"the university and the college have always had a positive and progressive relationship, and the eap program is another avenue of educational collaboration between thunder bay's two post-secondary institutions," says dr. gilbert. the curriculum focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening in academic contexts. the program includes a grammar review, learning strategies, writing summaries and short essays, pronunciation, and improving reading comprehension along with speed and accuracy. a variety of instructional methods will be used including lectures, web-based exercises, discussion and debate, independent study, and other applied activities.

"the eap is a great program for our potential international graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ," says dr. kim fedderson, dean, social sciences and humanities. "lakehead often receives applications from international graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 with high academic credentials, but whose english language proficiency presents a barrier. with the eap program, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will be better able to develop the necessary communication skills to work effectively in an english-speaking academic environment. they will be able to communicate their research properly to others as well as work as teachers' assistants for undergraduate programs at the university. this is an excellent option for these 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , and i am pleased to see this partnership become a reality."

dr. fedderson spearheaded the eap partnership, with support from dr. gary boire, dean of international and graduate studies, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 . designed specifically for international graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , there is expectation that the program may be expanded to include international 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 at the undergraduate level.

initially, the program will be offered by confederation during the spring/summer term in order to prepare 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 for a fall start at lakehead u. as the program develops, the possibility of a fall eap program geared to a winter start at lakehead will be explored. classes will be conducted at confederation college. upon completion of the program, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will be able to analyze academic material and express themselves logically in both oral and written form.

lakehead u establishes international ties

memorandum of understanding creates opportunities for faculty of business professors and 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛
(thunder bay - june 23, 2005) 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and liaoning technical university, china, are signing a memorandum of understanding to create opportunities for faculty members and 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 in each university's faculty of business administration.
a delegation from liaoning university is on campus to sign an mou to further a partnership between the two universities. last year, dr. bahram dadgostar, dean, faculty of business administration, signed a letter of intent to look into opportunities for collaboration, teaching, and research between the business faculties at each university.
the mou is two-fold. first, faculty members at both universities visit the other campus to share ideas and expertise towards the development of academic programming for a possible joint degree program. at this stage, they will explore opportunities for further faculty exchange, the organization of academic activities as well as the development of curriculum for courses to be offered at each university for the degree. once this stage is complete, steps will be taken to make this joint degree program a reality.
"this is a very exciting prospect, and i am pleased to see it progressing to this stage," says dr. dadgostar. "this is a fantastic opportunity for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 here and in china. of course, an access program in english is being considered so if we do move to stage two, our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 can have english courses at liaoning technical university."

lakehead u researcher receives funding for safe transportation for seniors project

(thunder bay - june 20, 2005) a 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researcher has received national funding for his work with older adults and driving safety. dr. michel bédard has received over $300,000 for his safe transportation for seniors project from auto 21 network of centers of excellence.
injuries due to motor vehicle crashes are the second leading cause of accidental death for older people. when older vehicle occupants are injured, their recovery time is longer and less complete than younger people and can lead to a loss of independence and greater reliance on the health care and social service systems.
dr. bédard, a psychology professor specializing in aging and health, is coordinating the team, which was recently awarded funding of $370,826 from the auto21 network of centres of excellence and several industry supporters. dr. jan miller polgar of the university of western ontario is the project's co-leader .
"auto21 is pleased to support this outstanding project," said dr. peter frise, program leader and ceo, auto21. "it will generate key information for canada's automotive sector while providing training opportunities for the student researchers who will assist with the investigation."
auto21 network of centres of excellence is a federal organizations focusing on automotive research. more than 230 researchers and close to 400 student researchers at 37 universities across the country contribute to the network. the research occurs in six key areas: health, safety and injury prevention; societal issues; materials and manufacturing; design processes; powertrains, fuels, and emissions; and intelligent systems and sensors.
