in "eating world literatures" we will deconstruct the significance of food in a selection of postcolonial and global texts, including novels, films, poetry, and short stories. together, we will seek to understand how food is used in literature to highlight power imbalances between genders, nations, and classes through the practices of harvesting, preparing, and eating food. we will likewise seek to understand how authors incorporate food and food practices into their text in culturally significant ways. what does it mean when an author includes a recipe in a work of fiction? how do we read discussions of hunger and food insecurity? cannibalism? what about food engineering or farming practices?
