the impact of covid-19 has been felt disproportionally by remote and rural communities which prior to the pandemic had limited access to reliable infrastructure, secure food supplies, clean water and access to health facilities. as we enter the post covid era, supply chains have become stressed, there is a back log of patients waiting for routine procedures and our food supplies have become less secure.
another serious problem the world faces today is climate change. warmer temperatures over time are changing weather patterns and disrupting the usual balance of nature. this poses many risks to human beings and all other forms of life on earth. nearly all land areas are seeing more hot days and heat waves; 2021 was one of the hottest years on record. higher temperatures increase heat-related illnesses and can make it more difficult to work and move around. wildfires start more easily and spread more rapidly when conditions are hotter. scientists have further predicted that long-term effects of climate change will include a decrease in sea ice and an increase in permafrost thawing, an increase in heat waves and heavy precipitation, and decreased water resources in semi-arid regions.
in 2021, climate change triggered serious flooding, leading to the collapse of eight arterial bridges in british columbia, canada, due to landslides and scour, and submerged thousands of homes and debilitated remote communities. in the scenarios assessed, limiting warming to around 1.5°c requires global greenhouse gas emissions to peak before 2025 at the latest, and be reduced by 43% by 2030; at the same time, methane would also need to be reduced by about a third. humanity faces an existential crisis.
india and canada have continuously worked in partnership with researchers of both the sides to develop and deploy low-cost solutions to support healthy communities. in this joint call for proposals, dst, dbt from india and ic-impacts from canada are seeking joint applications aimed at addressing the issues faced by remote and rural communities in the post covid world.

partnership engage grants are expected to respond to the objectives of the insight program and the connection program. however, partnership engage grants cannot respond exclusively to the objectives of the connection program.
these grants provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector. the small-scale, stakeholder-driven partnerships supported through partnership engage grants are meant to respond to immediate needs and time constraints facing organizations in non-academic sectors. in addressing an organization-specific need, challenge and/or opportunity, these partnerships let non-academic organizations and postsecondary researchers access each other’s unique knowledge, expertise and capabilities on topics of mutual interest.

the objective of this funding opportunity is to catalyze and support research efforts of canadian researchers to use the available clsa data in order to better understand how (individually and in combination) the biological, medical, psychological, social, lifestyle and/or economic aspects of people’s lives have an impact in both maintaining health and in the development of disease and disability as people age.
the gender-based violence research initiative is a joint initiative between women and gender equality canada (wage) and the social sciences and humanities research council (sshrc). wage will invest up to $2,500,000 and sshrc up to $1,000,000 over four years to co-fund research projects that address gender-based violence (gbv). the goal of this initiative is to support academic researchers, in partnership with other research-focused and community-based organizations, to advance knowledge on, and analyze the causes and persistence of gbv in canada. this research could include methods of prevention, access to justice, and support services for victims and survivors.

two canada council for the arts molson prizes, in the amount of $50,000 each, are awarded annually to distinguished individuals (one in the arts and one in the social sciences and humanities). the prizes are intended to encourage continuing contributions to the cultural and intellectual heritage of canada.
the prizes are funded by an endowment from the molson foundation, and they are administered by the canada council in collaboration with the social sciences and humanities research council of canada (sshrc). the winners are chosen by a peer assessment committee, which is appointed jointly by the canada council and the sshrc.
