the ontario ministry of transportation (mto) is pleased to announce the call for proposals as part of the 2019-2020 road safety research partnership program (rsrpp). this program funds researchers in the broader public sector to conduct cutting-edge, road safety research that supports ontario’s efforts to improve road safety.

for the 2019-2020 competition, proposals must involve one of the following five key priority areas: 1) distracted driving; 2) driver education, training, and evaluation; 3) impaired driving; 4) automated/connected vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems; or 5) vulnerable road users. the mto will be funding up to 5 projects, each with a maximum value of $70,000 or $100,000 depending on the priority area addressed (see proposal guidelines below). all relevant documents for this funding opportunity can be downloaded using the links below, including additional information on the priority areas and detailed instructions on the application process.

scope

the measuring the impacts of financial and organizational restructuring of public health opportunity is expected to:

• generate evidence on how changes to the funding, organization and/or delivery of public health services impact population health, health systems and health equity;
• improve data and methods for measuring the benefits, costs, harms and trade-offs of changes in public health funding, organization and /or delivery; and
• develop evidence that can be used to inform future decisions or policies related to public health resourcing and organization.

this award is intended to recognize published research in a peer-reviewed journal that has significantly contributed to the advancement of the field of health services and policy research in canada. the research article must report on original research conducted by the author (commentaries and editorials will not considered). ihspr will consider articles related to:

• research that demonstrates a clear impact or potential impact on policy, practice, or health outcomes (e.g., decision maker uptake, change management for improved practice);

  or

• research that breaks ground in the way health services or policy research is conducted (e.g., innovations in methodology, novel theory or application of theory, new approaches to existing problems).

the cihr-ipph trailblazer award in population and public health research is a career achievement award that recognizes exceptional contributions in the area of population and public health research. applicants must have made substantial impacts on the field of population health and its use in policy and/or practice in canada and/or internationally. the award also recognizes the leadership, mentorship, and innovative contributions of the recipients.

the cihr-ipph will consider applications for this award that are determined to be relevant to the institute mandate and in keeping with the institute values of:

• coherent intersectoral action for population health improvements;
• scalable population health solutions; and
• equitable population health impacts.

up to three awards will be given, for exceptional researchers at different career stages.

the objective of the idea to innovation (i2i) grants is to accelerate the pre-competitive development of promising technology originating from the university and college sector and promote its transfer to a new or established canadian company. the i2i grants provide funding to college and university faculty members to support research and development projects with recognized technology transfer potential. this is achieved through defined phases by providing crucial assistance in the early stages of technology validation and market connection.

the social sciences and humanities research council of canada (sshrc), the natural sciences and engineering research council of canada (nserc), and the canadian institutes of health research (cihr) have launched a knowledge synthesis grants competition to assess the state of research knowledge on the topic of “living within the earth’s carrying capacity.”

living within the earth’s carrying capacity is one of 16 new global future challenges identified through sshrc’s imagining canada’s future initiative. all of the challenges cross multiple sectors and research disciplines, and require broad collaboration to address.

the tanaka fund was established in 1974 as the result of an exchange of gifts between the governments of canada and japan. canada offered $1,000,000 to japan to promote canadian studies in japanese universities, while japan provided 300 million yen for the enhancement of japanese studies in canadian universities. the funds were used to establish the “japan foundation trust fund for the promotion of japanese studies in canadian universities”.
