mitacs canadian science policy fellowship

how to apply: 

the canadian science policy fellowship (cspf) is now accepting applications from prospective fellows interested in undertaking a year-long policy position with a canadian government host office beginning in september 2022.

eligible applicants must:

  • be a canadian citizen or permanent resident*
  • hold a phd in any academic discipline at the start of the fellowship
  • participate full-time in a 12-month fellowship with the host office
  • secure accommodation in the host city, and relocate to their host office as needed
  • negotiate a leave of absence from their current employer, as applicable
  • meet any additional requirements of their hosts, including (but not limited to) security clearance requirements


the 2022 cohort of fellowships will begin in september 2022. approved fellows receive remuneration from their host offices as well as professional development training and networking events facilitated by mitacs.

eligibility requirements

to be considered for funding, applicants must form a project consortium and develop a collaborative research and development (r&d) project that meets the following criteria:

canadian applicant

  • the canadian applicant must:
    • be an incorporated, profit‑oriented small or medium‑sized business in canada
    • have 500 or fewer full‑time equivalent employees
    • pursue growth and profit by developing and commercializing innovative, technology‑driven new or improved products, services or processes in canada
    • have a differentiated and protectable technology that could become competitive in global markets
    • have sufficient working capital and resources to undertake a multi‑year r&d collaboration and commercialize the results
    • be committed to significant growth through international market expansion
  • preference may be given to sme applicants who:
    • have a minimum of 15 full‑time equivalent employees
    • have commercialized 1 or more products domestically or internationally
    • have greater than $500,000 cad in annual revenue

consortium

  • the project consortium must include at least:
    • 1 incorporated canadian small or medium‑sized enterprise (sme), defined as a for‑profit company with 500 or fewer full‑time equivalent employees
      • participation of canadian research institutes/universities, large enterprises and other companies are welcome as additional participants on a self‑funding basis or subcontractors
    • 1 eligible israeli r&d‑performing company
      • participation of israeli research institutes/universities are welcome as subcontractors
    • the parties listed above must be unrelated parties (i.e. no direct, indirect, beneficial or constructive ownership interest between these parties)
  • the project partners that form the consortium must agree on a plan addressing intellectual property rights and intent to commercialize

working together, the governments of canada and israel aim to foster and support collaborative industrial research and development (r&d) projects with a high potential for commercialization. this call for proposals is open to organizations from canada and israel who wish to form project consortia to perform collaborative projects focused on developing innovative products, processes, or technology‑based services.

together with the quebec consortium for drug discovery (cqdm), brain canada is pleased to share an upcoming funding opportunity for canadian researchers. cqdm’s quantum leap pharma-led funding program for drug discovery research aims to support innovative translational biopharmaceutical research projects that are at advanced stages of development and that have the potential to improve, facilitate and/or accelerate the drug discovery process and the development of safer and more effective drugs.

projects selected as part of the quantum leap program focus on developing cutting-edge technologies with the potential to significantly advance the r&d activities of cqdm’s pharmaceutical members. quantum leap projects are executed in close collaboration and with the expert support and funds of pharmaceutical members.

brain canada is partnering with the quantum leap pharma-led funding program for drug discovery research on eligible brain related projects.

the health system impact fellowship is expected to:

  • support impact-oriented career paths and elevate the career readiness of doctoral trainees and post-doctoral fellows studying hspr or related fields by supporting embedded research opportunities within health system and related organizations outside of the traditional university environment and enriched competency development (e.g., leadership, project management);

advanced grants program

how to apply: 

european research commission (erc) - the erc has opened the 2022 call for applications to the advanced grants program, for senior researchers in any field of research with a track record of at least 10 years.  to be eligible, researchers must spend at least 50% of their time at an eligible eu host institution.  grants are for individual pis, but can be used to support research team members in any country.  erc grants can be made up to €2.5 million for up to 5 years (prorated for shorter projects).  funding can cover up to 100% of direct costs, plus 25% of the total contribution toward indirect costs. the application deadline is april 28, 2022.
