discovery grants – northern research supplements program

how to apply:

description

the nrs program is aimed at nserc-funded researchers who intend to conduct discovery research in canada's north. successful applicants will receive a supplement to their discovery grant (dg) in the range of $10,000 to $25,000 per year, for the duration of their dg. awards at the upper end of this range will be made to those with higher logistical costs and to recognize outstanding contributions to outreach, engagement and collaboration with northerners (note: in the context of this program, “northerner” refers to both indigenous and non-indigenous community members).

recipients of nrs awards are not restricted to the specific activities described in the application, but they must pursue research interests in the north. only costs associated with working in the canadian north are eligible expenses. in order to reduce field costs, researchers may also consider natural resources canada’s  polar continental shelf program (pcsp), which provides logistical support for field projects. other federal funding opportunities for northern research can be found through polar knowledge canada’s  funding for researchers page.

eligibility

nrs funding is only accessible to researchers who meet nserc’s eligibility criteria for faculty, who are applying to the current dg competition, and whose research endeavors will take them to work in the canadian north.

for the purposes of this program, canada's north is defined as the land- and ocean-based territory north of the southern limit of isolated patches of permafrost from northern british columbia to labrador, including the entirety of the three territories. geographic eligibility does not include the stretch down the central rocky mountains along the bc/ab border and several other non-contiguous pockets further to the south. for a map outlining the location of permafrost (shown in bands of yellow, green, blue, purple and red), visit natural resources canada’s  permafrost page.

dissertation fieldwork grant - post phd research grant

how to apply:

dissertation fieldwork grant

this grant program funds doctoral or thesis research that advances anthropological knowledge. our goal is to support vibrant and significant work that furthers our understanding of what it means to be human. there is no preference for any methodology, research location, topic, or subfield. the foundation particularly welcomes proposals that integrate two or more subfields and pioneer new approaches and ideas.

post-phd research grant

this grant program funds individual research projects undertaken by doctorates in anthropology or a closely related field. our goal is to support vibrant and significant work that furthers our understanding of what it means to be human. there is no preference for any methodology, research location, topic, or subfield. the foundation particularly welcomes proposals that integrate two or more subfields and pioneer new approaches and ideas.

building resilient and carbon-neutral communities post covid

how to apply:

the impact of covid-19 has been felt disproportionally by remote and rural communities which prior to the pandemic had limited access to reliable infrastructure, secure food supplies, clean water and access to health facilities. as we enter the post covid era, supply chains have become stressed, there is a back log of patients waiting for routine procedures and our food supplies have become less secure.

another serious problem the world faces today is climate change. warmer temperatures over time are changing weather patterns and disrupting the usual balance of nature. this poses many risks to human beings and all other forms of life on earth. nearly all land areas are seeing more hot days and heat waves; 2021 was one of the hottest years on record. higher temperatures increase heat-related illnesses and can make it more difficult to work and move around. wildfires start more easily and spread more rapidly when conditions are hotter. scientists have further predicted that long-term effects of climate change will include a decrease in sea ice and an increase in permafrost thawing, an increase in heat waves and heavy precipitation, and decreased water resources in semi-arid regions.

in 2021, climate change triggered serious flooding, leading to the collapse of eight arterial bridges in british columbia, canada, due to landslides and scour, and submerged thousands of homes and debilitated remote communities. in the scenarios assessed, limiting warming to around 1.5°c requires global greenhouse gas emissions to peak before 2025 at the latest, and be reduced by 43% by 2030; at the same time, methane would also need to be reduced by about a third. humanity faces an existential crisis.

india and canada have continuously worked in partnership with researchers of both the sides to develop and deploy low-cost solutions to support healthy communities. in this joint call for proposals, dst, dbt from india and ic-impacts from canada are seeking joint applications aimed at addressing the issues faced by remote and rural communities in the post covid world.

partnership engage grants

how to apply:

partnership engage grants are expected to respond to the objectives of the insight program and the connection program. however, partnership engage grants cannot respond exclusively to the objectives of the connection program.

these grants provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector. the small-scale, stakeholder-driven partnerships supported through partnership engage grants are meant to respond to immediate needs and time constraints facing organizations in non-academic sectors. in addressing an organization-specific need, challenge and/or opportunity, these partnerships let non-academic organizations and postsecondary researchers access each other’s unique knowledge, expertise and capabilities on topics of mutual interest.

sshrc welcomes applications involving indigenous research, as well as those involving research-creation.

for tools and resources to assist in the planning and implementation of your partnership, see sshrc’s partnerships tool-kit.
