the purpose of the india studies program is to promote understanding ofindiaincanada. academic and arts fellowships are tenable for three to six months. the fellowship covers a round trip economy airfare from the fellow’s place of affiliation incanadato the place of affiliation inindiaand a monthly allowance up to rs 35,000 per month.

applicants should be aware that their fellowship money may not cover all related expenses and are encouraged to seek additional funding.

fellowships are awarded on the basis of detailed proposals which are reviewed by academic and professional peers.

neurodegenerative diseases (nd) are debilitating and largely untreatable conditions that are strongly linked with age. in europe, there are estimated to be between 6.3 and 7.3 million people suffering from alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, the most frequent class of neurodegenerative diseases. this figure is expected to double every 20 years as the european population ages. the total direct and informal care costs of alzheimer’s and related disorders are in the range of €105-160 billion across the european union. existing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases are limited in effect and mainly address the symptoms rather than the cause. in this context, the 'joint programme neurodegenerative disease research’ (jpnd) has been established in order to better coordinate european efforts on the level of transnational collaboration and project coordination on the basis of the joint european research strategy, published in february 2012.

there is a lack of understanding of the patho-physiological mechanisms being the basis for prognosis and diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases. however, there is clinical, genetic and biochemical evidence that similar molecular pathways are relevant in different neurodegenerative diseases. similarities in pathways have also been found with other chronic diseases, suggesting that neurodegenerative diseases are part of a continuum of phenotypic chronic diseases. a systems approach is needed to characterize diseases as multi-level network perturbations. it should merge computational as well as experimental approaches, considering molecules, cells and organs. therefore, jpnd launches this joint transnational call for proposals in order to encourage combined analysis of diseases across traditional clinical boundaries, which may lead to a re-definition of clinical phenotypes and new approaches in the treatment of neurodegeneration as part of a complex chronic disease.

the pathways implementation research teams (irts) funding opportunity supports the overall goal of pathways which is to develop a better understanding of how to design, implement and scale-up population health interventions that will improve aboriginal health. there are four exemplars of focus: suicide, diabetes/obesity, tuberculosis, and oral health.

the specific objectives of this funding opportunity are:

• to support new investigators in the field of health ethics or investigators new to the field of health ethics, as a first step towards the pursuit of more comprehensive funding opportunities (e.g., operating grants);

the aim of the call is to enable scientists in different countries to build an effective collaboration on a common interdisciplinary research project based on complementarities and sharing of expertise, with a clear translational research approach.

the specific objective of this call is to promote the development of innovative therapeutic approaches for rare diseases. in order to achieve this goal, the necessary expertise and resources should be brought together from academia, clinical/public health sector and private companies.

projects shall involve a group of rare diseases or a single rare disease following the european definition (a seriously debilitating and/or life-threatening disease affecting not more than 5 in 10.000 people). rare infectious diseases, rare cancers and rare adverse drug events in treatments of common diseases are excluded from the scope of the call.

the research projects have to focus on the pre-clinical development of therapeutic approaches in suitable existing animal or cell models.  therapeutic approaches can include:

• cell-based therapy (e.g. somatic cell therapy, cell-based regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, therapies based on combinations of cells with scaffolds or substrates, etc.)
• gene therapy (e.g. transfer of nucleic acids for therapeutic purposes including dna, rna, oligonucleotides etc.)
• pharmacological therapy (e.g. use of chemicals or biopharmaceuticals including repurposing approaches, high throughput screening of molecules, etc.)

the following approaches and topics are excluded from the scope of the call:

• development of new cell or animal models. the relevant cell or animal models do already need to be established for the purpose of the project
• interventional clinical trials or any projects enrolling patients
• therapeutic approaches concerning rare infectious diseases, rare cancers and rare adverse drug events in treatments of common diseases
• surgery or radiation therapies
