2023 grants program strategic initiative: occupational exposure to diesel engine exhaust (dee) and lung and bladder cancers (systematic review)
the wsib is seeking applications for a new funding competition. the wsib research and grants program will be awarding one successful application for a systematic review that specifically aims to a) evaluate the evidence on occupational exposure to diesel engine exhaust (dee) and the development of primary site cancers of the lung (icd-9 162, icd-10 c33-34) and bladder (icd-9 188, icd-10 c67); b) examine exposure-response relationships by detailed exposure characteristics; c) identify industries and occupations with high risk of lung or bladder cancer development; and d) evaluate the potential for synergistic relationships between dee and other risk factors for lung or bladder cancer.
outcomes from the systematic review may be considered by the wsib to determine whether the scientific evidence meets the recommended standards for scheduling, policy development or to underpin adjudicative support in case-by-case decision-making.
the review must address:
- occupational exposure to dee and development of primary-site cancers of the lung and bladder among exposed workers
- the identification and assessment of:
- industries and occupations with high risk of lung or bladder cancer with occupational exposure to dee (e.g., mining, transportation)
- the shape and distribution of the relationship between dee exposure and lung/bladder cancer development; the effect of highest levels compared with lowest levels of dee exposure on lung/bladder cancer development; any exposure-response trends of increasing risk with increasing exposure using exposure surrogates such as average exposure, duration, cumulative exposure and whether there is a minimum cumulative exposure associated with increased risk
- minimal interval (latency) between the first exposure and the development of lung or bladder cancer
- any interdependent causes or synergistic relationships with other risk factors (e.g., exposure to other carcinogens)
