2023 grants program strategic initiative: occupational exposure to diesel engine exhaust (dee) and lung and bladder cancers (systematic review)

how to apply:

the wsib is seeking applications for a new funding competition. the wsib research and grants program will be awarding one successful application for a systematic review that specifically aims to a) evaluate the evidence on occupational exposure to diesel engine exhaust (dee) and the development of primary site cancers of the lung (icd-9 162, icd-10 c33-34) and bladder (icd-9 188, icd-10 c67); b) examine exposure-response relationships by detailed exposure characteristics; c) identify industries and occupations with high risk of lung or bladder cancer development; and d) evaluate the potential for synergistic relationships between dee and other risk factors for lung or bladder cancer.

outcomes from the systematic review may be considered by the wsib to determine whether the scientific evidence meets the recommended standards for scheduling, policy development or to underpin adjudicative support in case-by-case decision-making.

the review must address:

  • occupational exposure to dee and development of primary-site cancers of the lung and bladder among exposed workers
  • the identification and assessment of:
    • industries and occupations with high risk of lung or bladder cancer with occupational exposure to dee (e.g., mining, transportation)
    • the shape and distribution of the relationship between dee exposure and lung/bladder cancer development; the effect of highest levels compared with lowest levels of dee exposure on lung/bladder cancer development; any exposure-response trends of increasing risk with increasing exposure using exposure surrogates such as average exposure, duration, cumulative exposure and whether there is a minimum cumulative exposure associated with increased risk
    • minimal interval (latency) between the first exposure and the development of lung or bladder cancer
    • any interdependent causes or synergistic relationships with other risk factors (e.g., exposure to other carcinogens)

partnership grants—stage 1

how to apply:

partnership grants are expected to respond to the objectives of the research partnerships program. proposals exclusively for partnered research training initiatives are expected to respond, instead, to the objectives of the research training and talent development program.

these grants provide support for new and existing formal partnerships over four to seven years to advance research, research training and/or knowledge mobilization in the social sciences and humanities. this is done through mutual co-operation and sharing of intellectual leadership, as well as through resources as shown by cash and/or in-kind contributions.

partnership grants are intended for large teams of postsecondary institutions and/or organizations of various types that work in formal collaboration.

the quality of training, mentoring and employability plans for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and emerging scholars will be evaluated as an important part of the proposed initiative. sshrc’s guidelines for effective research training explain how 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and emerging scholars can meaningfully participate in proposed initiatives.

the intellectual leadership and governance for a new or existing formal partnership can come from the research community and/or from partner organizations from the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. however, only an institution that meets institutional eligibility requirements can administer the grant funding. for more information, see eligibility.

sshrc’s partnerships tool-kit offers tools and resources to assist in the planning and implementation of your partnership.

as these are complex grants, please contact the office of research (sshrc.research@lakeheadu.ca) at least two months in advance of the sshrc deadline to indicate your interest in this program.
