joint federal research funding program for military personnel and veterans: environmental scan of best practices and approaches to models of care for aging populations

how to apply:

background

veterans affairs canada invites researchers from relevant fields to submit proposals to undertake a study of emerging research, best practices and approaches to support aging veterans to remain safely and independently in their homes through access to the services and supports they require.

as part of vac’s mandate as defined by the department of veterans affairs act, vac is responsible for the care, treatment, or re-establishment in civil life of those who served in the canadian forces. one of the ways vac meets this mandate commitment is through the administration of health care programming for veterans.

vac is currently conducting a review of home care supports to ensure that it continues to meet the evolving needs of veterans and that it is keeping pace with new and emerging trends.

research objectives

this funding opportunity is seeking submissions to conduct an environmental scan of academic literature and public documents regarding emerging trends, best practices and challenges in models of home care, including but not limited to, provision of personal care, respite care and palliative care. focus should be on countries or regions that have demonstrated success in supporting their citizens as they age at home. this research can be conducted in relation to the broader population and not limited to the canadian veteran population.

final report to include the following:

  • identify academic literature and public documents regarding emerging trends, best practices and challenges in models of home care.
  • identify any factors or potential issues that would hinder the application and success of home care (e.g. limited access to services, availability of family caregivers)
  • identify research that indicates when it may no longer be safe to remain in the home.
  • gender-based analysis plus and considerations.
  • any additional considerations for vac in developing and implementing a policy approach or strategy to healthcare for aging veterans
