two of the five research matters’ virtual scavenger hunt grand prizes have been awarded to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 who participated in february’s province-wide research challenge.

the council of ontario universities organizes research matters events to encourage the public to explore how ontario university research affects everyday life. the virtual scavenger hunt took 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and the public on a journey into research happening at universities across ontario.

more than 800 ontarians participated in the virtual scavenger hunt, including approximately 600 university 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 who were hoping to receive one of the five grand prizes. forty 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 participated in the challenge and two of these 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 won the grand prize.

lakehead 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 stacy tkachyk and keifer sutch received the $500 grand prizes in a raffle out of all university 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 who answered the questions correctly.

tkachyk is a first-year student at the northern ontario school of medicine who is interested in research related to the role of hemoglobin on reoccurring surgeries and amputations.

“i enjoyed the fact that i could learn something new each day,” tkachyk said. “research can be very intimidating if you don’t know where to start. there were many areas of interest and research topics that i didn’t realize existed and would never have learned about without participating in the scavenger hunt.”

sutch is a fourth-year undergraduate student in concurrent education/outdoor recreation who is interested in research related to environmental sustainability.

“the best part about participating in the virtual scavenger hunt was learning what different universities across ontario were doing in terms of research and how big of an impact some of the research projects will have on our lives in the future,” said sutch.

erica sawula, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s research matters student ambassador, is thrilled with the success of the virtual scavenger hunt.

“it’s encouraging that so many people participated in the scavenger hunt and learned about research happening at ontario universities,” sawula said. “this research will have a major impact on our future therefore it’s important that the public know more about it.”

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s board of governors have passed a motion that current board vice-chair, murray walberg, will assume the role of chair of the university’s board of governors in october 2014.

“阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 is critically important to the prosperity of our community and region,” said mr. walberg. “i am proud to be given the opportunity to further support lakehead’s continued progress and growth as the next chair of its board of governors.”

current board of governors chair cameron clark said, “i am delighted that murray has accepted what i consider the privilege of chairing this board. his personal and professional history, as well as his familiarity with northwestern ontario and the thunder bay community, will bring excellent leadership skills and a wealth of experience to our board of governors and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .”

murray walberg

born and raised in thunder bay, mr. walberg’s 25 year career in the financial services sector has provided a variety of leadership experiences across north america.

mr. walberg has extensive senior management experience in canada and the united states, including as royal bank of canada’s director & national manager, wealth management strategy and head, and north american manager, strategy for rbc usa. mr. walberg returned home to thunder bay in 2005 as rbc’s regional vice president, northwestern ontario.

mr. walberg has several notable professional and academic designations, including icd.d from the university of toronto’s rotman school of management, institute of corporate directors; fellow of the institute of canadian bankers; and is a certified financial planner. he also holds a masters, business administration (mba) from dalhousie university.

mr. walberg is very active in the community and is involved in a variety of organizations: director of united way of thunder bay; president of ambassadors northwest; and federal director of the thunder bay port authority.

mr. walberg is married to his wife, loretta, and has three children, amanda (16), megan (15) and thomas (9).

new board of governors members during the 2013-2014 year

as it strives to maintain a diverse membership reflective of the population it serves, lakehead’s board of governors has recently welcomed three new members.

bill keeler, a member of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s alumni association, joined the board of governors in october 2013. a former two-term president and still an active member of lakehead’s alumni board, mr. keeler was lakehead’s athletic facilities supervisor for over 27 years before retiring in 2009, and received the 2009 ontario university association’s j.p. loosemore award in recognition of his major contributions through administrative work with university sport.

paul capon, chair of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s ogimaawin-aboriginal governance council (o-agc), joined the board of governors in december 2013. mr. capon is currently a political advisor at the matawa first nations tribal council in thunder bay, and has years of experience working with first nations and aboriginal groups.

angela maltese was appointed as one of the board of governors’ lieutenant governors’ in council appointees in february 2014. a chartered accountant, certified financial planner, and partner with grant thornton llp in thunder bay, ms. maltese will bring her vast experience on local and provincial committees and boards, as well as a wealth of knowledge about, and history in, thunder bay, to lakehead’s board of governors.

lakehead’s accounting 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 placed first at this year’s gathering of accounting associates, professionals, and 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 (gaaps) competition out of 12 undergraduate teams from across canada.

the winning lakehead team was comprised of fourth-year accounting 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ben anderson, lucas bauer, nick dzikowski, and taylor hosanna. this isn’t the first time lakehead’s accounting 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 have done well in the competition – they finished second in 2013, first in 2011 and third in 2010.

“the fact that lakehead 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 excel in competitions like this time and time again really shows the quality of education we receive here,” said hosanna.

“all of our professors provide us with the technical knowledge we need for success, but it’s more than that. the presentations, group work and extracurricular activities that our professors encourage us to participate in give us a well-rounded set of skills which prepare us for these competitions and for the working world as well,” hosanna said.

the conference was recently hosted by the university of manitoba, which placed second. team lakehead’s first-place ranking earned them a trophy and $1,500 in prize money.

"it was really great to be back this year and build on last year’s success,” said dzikowski. “we definitely learned from mistakes made in the prior year and used our experience in the competition to our advantage.

“the cases were unique and challenging but everyone assumed their roles quickly and our presentations were well executed. we learned that the winning team isn't necessarily the one with the most detailed analysis or flashiest slideshow, but rather the one that is confident and best able to justify its conclusions to the judges,” he said.

bauer echoed his teammate’s comments. “by using our experiences from last year, our team had a strong advantage in knowing how to work and communicate with each other effectively,” he said. “although our team faced challenges during the competition, our comfort level was a calming influence and a key to our success.”

the annual gaaps includes an accounting-based case competition, guest speakers and networking events.

anderson said his favourite aspect of the competition was the networking opportunities. “the event was a chance to meet many 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and even some professionals in a casual setting,” anderson said. “if i ever decide to work in manitoba, i'll always have access to that network."

lakehead associate professor of accounting, dr. camillo lento, said the 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ’ success is a testament to their hard work and the quality of the university’s business program.

“these 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 represented all of their peers at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , and everyone is excited that the team placed first. it is great to see the 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 achieve such great results after all of their hard work.”

lakehead was also represented by a second team consisting of third-year 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 salvatore tozzo, meagan ellis, rachel labate, and fourth-year student justin donaldson.

more than 200 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 recently learned about the human face of caring through an interactive mask-making project that will help shape the nurses that they will become.

the goal is to teach bachelor of science in nursing 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 about caring by helping them understand themselves, others and the world they live in.

the project, called an aesthetic expression of caring through mask making and storytelling, was funded by the associated medical services phoenix foundation: call for caring grant.

during one of the first days of class, last september, first-year bachelor of science nursing 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 were paired with a complete stranger from their class whom they would make a mask with.

“this experience was hands-on, nitty-gritty reflective learning,” said socorro woodman, a student who participated in the project. “not only did we wrap plastic and then layers of plaster over a stranger’s face, but then we had that done to ourselves.”

“trusting someone to cover your mouth and nose, however brief, is incredibly humbling,” woodman said.

dr. michelle spadoni, associate professor in the school of nursing, explained the concept of the design of the inside and outside of the 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ’ masks: “the outside of their masks is painted to represent the way 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 believe people see them while the inside is painted the way 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 see themselves.”

世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 began the project by communicating with their partner through a website, having never met them, previously. they then had to find and get to know their partner on the first day of class.

while making the mask, they had to cover their partner’s face with plastic wrap, providing a small hole to breathe through. next, four layers of plaster were applied to the person’s face. after 45 minutes, the mask was removed and the other person’s mask was applied.

“as a group, we were immediately vulnerable to each other’s stories and we connected deeply with each other from the very get-go,” said heidi zettel, a student who participated in the project.

“we learned that knowing our self directly relates to the quality of care we will be able to provide to our future patients. we are now more aware that every person has their own story and that each of those stories is invaluable. i feel very thankful for this experience,” zettel added.

the masks are displayed along 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s the row — along the second-floor hall where administration’s offices are located in the university centre — until the end of march.

“the row is our very own art gallery and a hallmark of our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ’ creativity,” said lakehead president and vice-chancellor, dr. brian stevenson. “these masks are not only another example of the imagination of our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ; they illustrate the importance of believing in yourself and connecting with others.”

these colourful and unique expressions of self and identity also represent a partnership between faculty in 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s school of nursing, the office of aboriginal initiatives and department of athletics.

lakehead professor’s textbook aims to empower elementary math teachers

mathematical models for teaching (canadian scholars’ press) is based on new theories about the teaching and learning of elementary mathematics. the ground-breaking textbook argues for a new pedagogy that goes above and beyond routine memorization.

“based on our research about teachers’ learning, and grounded in a framework of models and modeling, this resource is designed to support growth in teachers' specialized understanding of mathematics content,” explained the textbook’s author, dr. ann kajander, an associate professor in 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s faculty of education.

“lakehead is known for its exceptional support of pre-service teachers' mathematical development and this resource is another example of that,” said dr. kajander, 2014 recipient of the margaret sinclair memorial award recognizing excellence and innovation in mathematics education.

co-author tom boland — a lakehead bed graduate, classroom teacher, and facilitator — explained that to be an effective teacher of mathematics, educators need to be more than simply ‘procedurally fluent’ with mathematical operations. “teachers need a deeper, more conceptual understanding of the mathematics we teach,” he said. “the use of models and reasoning provides this necessary conceptual basis.”

mathematical models for teaching’s comprehensive approach addresses areas of mathematical study identified as problematic for teachers, and guides readers through the development of understanding that supports student learning.

unlike traditional mathematical resources for educators, each chapter of mathematical models for teaching assists in the formation of underlying concepts to support appropriate and developmental classroom learning, while cross-chapter references encourage readers to make critical connections. topics include what teachers need to know about numbers and operations, patterning and algebra, geometry, spatial sense, measurement, data management, and probability.

lakehead's department of mathematical sciences is privileged to be a regional host for the canadian math kangaroo contest for the second year in a row. the contest will be held in thunder bay on sunday, march 23 in the university’s ryan building, between 12 and 3 pm.

“the kangaroo contest provides 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 with challenging questions beyond the regular curriculum that will spark their interest in mathematics. participating in math contests boosts their confidence and gives them the opportunity to interact with like-minded peers,” said dr. monica ilie, mathematical sciences associate professor.

the co-curricular record (ccr) was launched as a new and exciting initiative for all 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 at lakehead’s orillia and thunder bay campuses. the ccr is an official document that chronicles a student’s involvement in not-for-credit activities at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

combined with their academic transcript, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will now have the perfect tool to be recognized and celebrated for their achievements inside and outside the classroom.

“世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 contribute in many different ways during their time at lakehead and we feel it’s important to recognize those contributions by providing an official document identifying their achievements and acquired skills,” said kelli gray, acting director, student services, at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 orillia.

the ccr documents out-of-classroom, non-credit experiences and activities that lakehead 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 have participated in while at the university. it validates a student’s hard work and highlights the learning outcomes and non-academic skills he or she gained while participating in these activities.

“the co-curricular record allows for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to benefit from value-added volunteerism,” said charmaine romaniuk, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 student union vice-president, student issues.

“the ccr is an incentive for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to become involved with the university and community partners by offering an official record of their involvement,” romaniuk added.

“research has shown us that 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 who are engaged in co-curricular activities during their universities studies are also 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 who develop strong leadership skills, are more self-confident, more thoughtful in making ethical decisions, and more often attain a higher academic standing,” said marian ryks-szelekovszky, vice-provost (student affairs).

“involved 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 are more satisfied with their university education, and having that involvement recognized in a document such as the co-curricular record can be a real advantage to them,” ryks-szelekovszky added.

“the ccr will be a great addition to our transcripts and resumés when we’re applying for jobs, or post-graduate opportunities,” said mason ainsworth, a third year honours bachelor of commerce student. “i plan to use it to boost my portfolio and resumé to give myself a competitive advantage when i enter the workforce.”

talks will be hosted by experts from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 who will discuss topics ranging from the beauty of bugs, classical guitar, and the fashion and femininity of flappers from the 1920s.

“in conversation brings the world of academia to the community,” says barb philp, head of adult services at the thunder bay public library. “it’s not every day that you get to hear such interesting discussions by researchers and experts from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .”

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 president & vice-chancellor, dr. brian stevenson, says lakehead, as a comprehensive university, offers an extensive range of learning opportunities.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s education fair 2014 will be held on friday, jan. 24 from 10 am – 3 pm in the agora.

this year’s fair will present a wide range of teaching opportunities by hosting school boards from ontario, manitoba, saskatchewan, alberta, bc and first nation education authorities. teacher recruitment agencies from the uk, china and korea will also be here to meet upcoming teachers.

“we continue to see increased teacher recruitment in northern and western parts of canada and a competitive demand for canadian teachers overseas, particularly in the united kingdom,” said christina buzzi, career and employment specialist with 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s student success centre.

the ontario provincial police and camp kodiak will also be present.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 participating in sustainability assessment

tuesday, jan. 7, 2014 – orillia and thunder bay

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 has registered for the sustainability tracking and rating system (stars) to rate sustainability on the thunder bay and orillia campuses.

offered through the association for the advancement of sustainability in higher education (asshe), stars is a voluntary, self-reporting tool that will rate the university’s sustainability achievements from economic, environmental and social perspectives.

more than 600 institutions worldwide have participated in stars, which examines categories such as operations, planning and administration, academics and engagement.

lakehead’s centre for place and sustainability studies will direct the project using the latest version of the stars assessment tool, with a completion date of approximately one year from now.

“this project is part of a larger culture-building initiative on the thunder bay and orillia campuses. every institution in higher education is facing multiple social, ecological, political, and economic challenges associated with sustainability,” said dr. david greenwood, canada research chair of environmental education and director for the centre for place and sustainability studies.

“this project will help us pay better attention to the sustainability work already underway at lakehead and guide us to where we ought to go next,” dr. greenwood said.

the centre for place and sustainability studies is working with a diverse team of stakeholders on both campuses that is gathering data and stories for the assessment that will be used to identify future directions for the university and build community on campus.

“at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 we are excited to join this growing movement to show where we’re excelling in sustainability and provide some direction on what more we can do to improve in this area,” said dr. rod hanley, provost and vice-president (academic).

there is also potential to use stars as a service-learning project in the classroom. for example, a fourth-year geography class has piloted stars by assigning 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to gather and report on data in the fields of transportation, energy, buildings, dining services, and water. independent study options are also available to individual 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 interested in participating.
