july 15, 2014 – thunder bay, on

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 anthropology professor dr. carney matheson and one of his former 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 recently travelled to bolzano, italy to study the weapons and tools found with europe’s oldest frozen mummy, Ötzi the ice man.

“some people call Ötzi the greatest archaeological discovery of the last century,” dr. matheson said. “he’s one of the oldest natural mummies in the world which is pretty exceptional.”

Ötzi was discovered in 1991 by two german hikers in the italian alps. the frozen mummy was so well-preserved that police were called to investigate the discovery as a homicide. at 5,300 years of age, Ötzi lived during the neolithic age and is europe’s oldest natural mummy. previous examinations of Ötzi’s tools revealed dna from the blood of four humans. technology found in Ötzi’s possession, such as medicinal fungi, has not been found elsewhere in the neolithic era.

“our work is a fascinating forensic investigation around the last moments of Ötzi’s life,” explained dr. matheson.

the institute of mummies and the iceman, and the south tyrol museum of archaeology requested that dr. matheson replicate analyses of blood traces on the mummy’s equipment and clothing performed by dr. matheson’s former supervisor, dr. tom loy, a researcher at the institute for molecular biosciences at the university of queensland, who died before his results could be published.

“there are many publications on Ötzi looking at him from all angles, however dr. loy was the only researcher to examine the mummy’s tools. Ötzi’s tools and equipment could be the key to everything,” dr. matheson said.

dr. matheson’s research team travelled to the south tyrol museum of archaeology, where the 5,300-year-old ice man is housed, in bolzano, italy earlier this year. his team examined approximately 20 artefacts found with Ötzi’s body, including hunting equipment, a first aid kit, medicinal items, and clothing.

dr. matheson brought equipment from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 to perform biochemical analyses of residues found on the artefacts, and to bring samples back to canada for further study.

research team member margaret-ashley veall, a former student of dr. matheson’s who is now a phd candidate at the university of oxford, explained the magnitude of the opportunity to study Ötzi. “we’ve been planning this for two years. i dropped everything to do this – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime privilege. this is the best it gets when it comes to career highs.”

a major supporter of this historic research endeavour was the institute of italian studies-阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 (iis-lu), which helped fund and equip the research team.

“this was a unique opportunity for the institute of italian studies because we usually focus on language and history,” said iis-lu president, roy piovesana. “the institute was delighted to support any research relating to the italian experience.”

crupi consulting group provided shirts and lab coats which identified that the researchers were from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and the institute.

dr. matheson and iis-lu intend to host public lectures to share their research findings and Ötzi experience with the community.

dr. matheson and veall are available for interviews.

roy piovesana, far left, iis-lu president, and john bonofiglio, far right, vice-president of iis-lu, presented cheques to margaret-ashley veall and dr. carney matheson. in the middle is laura craig, director of research, crupi consulting group.

lakehead’s nserc grant recipients examining wind energy, climate change

july 14, 2014 – thunder bay, on

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researchers are receiving natural sciences and engineering research council (nserc) grants worth more than $2.1 million.

the following nserc discovery grants, given over five years, are allowing lakehead researchers to examine better ways to harvest wind energy, to study the impacts of climate change and land use on the boreal forest, to investigate how buildings made of engineered-wood products respond in a fire, and study the formation of two dimensional polymers.

lakehead engineering professor dr. mohammad uddin is receiving $155,000 to develop intelligent control algorithms that will help create more efficient systems for converting wind energy into electricity and more efficient motors for electric vehicles.

"the algorithms will act like a brain by automatically adjusting the frequency and voltage of the wind generator or motor,” dr. uddin said. “this project will train highly qualified personnel needed by the power, oil, mine and automotive industries.”

dr. han chen, a professor in the faculty of natural resources management, is receiving $170,000 to study the effects of global climate and land-use change on the diversity and ecosystem functions of the boreal forest.

“my goal is to determine how and why human influences affect the boreal forest. we will help develop mitigation and adaptation strategies to benefit local and regional ecosystems,” dr. chen said.

dr. sam salem, an assistant professor in civil engineering, is receiving $110,000 to explore the structural fire performance of engineered-wood building systems.  his project focuses on glue-laminated and cross-laminated timbers; two important components of modern building construction.

“the findings of this research will contribute to the advancement of the design and construction of buildings made of engineered-wood products in canada,” dr. salem said.

dr. mark gallagher, a professor in physics, is receiving $100,000 to study the formation of atomically thin two dimensional polymers. in particular, dr. gallagher will investigate polymerization on silicon and oxide surfaces.

“we anticipate that this research will contribute to the development of a new class of organic materials with wide ranging applications in electronics, optics, and sensor technology,” said dr. gallagher, adding that the majority of the grant will be used to support undergraduate and graduate student participation in the project.

these four projects will support approximately 18 graduate (phd and masters) and 10 undergraduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .  training of these highly qualified personnel will contribute to canada’s economic growth and ability to respond to changing markets and environments.

also of interest is the $25,000 engage grant awarded to dr. aicheng chen, a professor in the department of chemistry and a canada research chair, to assess the long-term durability of adhesive material used by bombardier, which contributed $8,000 to the research.

dr. chen will use a computer-controlled test chamber to emulate environmental conditions such as temperature, moisture and sunlight on bonded joints over a period of six months.

“this research will allow bombardier to better understand the physical and chemical properties of available adhesives in order to assess and identify suitable candidates that will work in north american environmental conditions,” dr. chen said.

“these projects demonstrate the diversity of research happening at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ,” said dr. andrew dean, vice-president, research, economic development & innovation (interim).

“congratulations to all of our researchers and thank you to nserc for recognizing the importance of this work,” dr. dean said.

lakehead chancellor dr. derek h. burney and his wife joan announced a $150,000 contribution to establish a postdoctoral fellowship within cesme.

may 29, 2014 – thunder bay, on

today, lakehead chancellor dr. derek h. burney and his wife, joan, announced a generous gift of $150,000 to establish a special postdoctoral fellowship at the university.

the derek and joan burney postdoctoral fellowship is the first fellowship established through lakehead’s centre of excellence for sustainable mining and exploration (cesme).

the new postdoctoral fellowship will be affiliated with lakehead’s department of economics within the faculty of science and environmental studies. the fellowship will fund a three-year bridging position at the university for a researcher who is between their phd and a faculty position.

“it is because of our education and what we were able to do with it, that we are in a position today to make this donation to cesme,” said dr. burney. “it is one that we sincerely hope will inspire others to do something similar in support of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .”

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 president & vice-chancellor, dr. brian stevenson, explained the importance of the burneys’ gift: “as the burneys’ generous gift will most certainly help push cesme closer to its goals, my hope is that their gesture encourages others to make philanthropic contributions to the centre and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“the returns on these kinds of investments are long-term, and are felt throughout northwestern ontario,” added dr. stevenson.

cesme’s director, dr. pete hollings, said, "by creating this postdoctoral fellowship, derek and joan burney are making a strong commitment to cesme.

“by directly supporting the people who undertake the research into resource development in northern ontario, the burneys recognize the important role that cesme will play in our region’s future," dr. hollings explained.

dr. john mason, project manager, mining services for the thunder bay economic development commission, explained the significance of cesme’s new fellowship. “it’s important to invest in strategic northwestern ontario mining industry players like 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and cesme because the mineral sector is a far-reaching and impactful economic driver in this region, and will continue to be for years to come,” he said.

the goal of cesme is to encourage and support research, education and outreach activities regarding the nature and impacts of mineral resource exploration and extraction particularly in northern ontario.

summer school on medical imaging launches fourth successful year

may 28, 2014 – thunder bay, on

scientists with the thunder bay regional research institute (tbrri) and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 are delighted to welcome 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to the 2014 summer school on medical imaging (ssmi).

now in its fourth year, the ssmi is a 16-week, multidisciplinary program designed to create the next generation of highly skilled professionals in the field of medical imaging — one of the most important tools for the future of medicine.

the ssmi emphasizes technical and scientific skills, and their application in a broader, “real-life” context that extends beyond the laboratory, said program founder and tbrri scientist dr. alla reznik, who spearheaded and directed the program in its first three years.

“we want these 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to understand and define research successes in the context of current and future patient needs, their communities, business and industry needs, and their own careers,” said dr. reznik, who is the canada research chair in physics of medical imaging at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“the work is not only about being in the lab – it requires an understanding of healthcare problems in order to develop new technologies and treatments that will meet patient needs. it requires linkages with business and industry in order to bring research products to market. it is not limited to research,” dr. reznik said.

ssmi is one component of dr. reznik’s six-year, $1.6 million create grant from the national sciences and engineering research council of canada (nserc).  a larger goal of the project is to create a medical imaging program at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

dr. reznik’s colleague, tbrri researcher and lakehead professor dr. mitchell albert, will take over the role of ssmi program director for 2014.

“the summer school in medical imaging is a great example of how tbrri partners with 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 to train and retain our region’s youth,” said dr. roxanne deslauriers, acting ceo for tbrri and vice-president, research, thunder bay regional health sciences centre.

“in the past, many thunder bay 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 felt that they had to leave the city to pursue education and careers in science. now our youth are realizing they can have a top-quality education and career in the medical field — without leaving northwestern ontario.”

“it is the energy and ideas of 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 that so often fuel research,” said dr. mark gallagher, professor and chair, physics department, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 . “lakehead is proud to partner with tbrri on this initiative to give our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 first-class training and experience in medical imaging in northwestern ontario.”

participating 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 work directly with tbrri and lakehead scientists on research projects they present to their peers and instructors at the end of the course. 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 also have the opportunity to shadow physicians during image-guided clinical procedures at the thunder bay regional health sciences centre.
