one of canada’s most famous philosophers, mark kingwell, will be the guest speaker at this year’s morris lecture, hosted by 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s department of philosophy.

“mark kingwell is canada's pre-eminent public intellectual, one of our best philosophers, an excellent writer, and a dynamic speaker,” said lakehead philosophy professor todd dufresne.

“kingwell’s work combines scholarship and an unusual understanding of contemporary issues ranging from politics to culture. in this presentation, he promises to address a common problem of everyday life: procrastination.

“who couldn't benefit from some quality time thinking about why it is we often put off doing things until tomorrow,” professor dufresne said.

many readers know kierkegaard as the philosopher of irony, faith, and anxiety, but he was also intimately acquainted with the mundane conditions of boredom and procrastination. kingwell describes his lecture as an exploration of the “deeper meanings of why we put things off and how we can disappear into the full fridge in which there is, apparently forever, nothing to eat.”

the annual morris lecture is free to the public and usually draws large crowds.

“with kingwell as our special guest this year, i am expecting a full house. the last time he spoke at lakehead in 2008, it was a very popular lecture,” dufresne said.

kingwell has appeared on tvo’s the agenda with steve paikin many times. he has written several books, including in pursuit of happiness: better living from plato to prozac, the world we want: restoring citizenship in a fractured age, and concrete reveries: consciousness and the city. he is a professor of philosophy and associate chair of the department of philosophy at the university of toronto.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 has graciously accepted a $1 million gift from the paterson foundation. the donation is intended to help further ongoing renovations to the port arthur collegiate institute and the university’s new faculty of law.

“the paterson foundation and the paterson family have been supporters of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 from the beginning,” said don paterson, president of the paterson foundation. “it is our hope that this support to the university will help to highlight the importance of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , particularly the faculty of law, in our community and will encourage others both in the community and beyond our borders to become involved.”

in recognition of this most generous gift, the faculty of law’s main auditorium will be named the john n. paterson faculty of law auditorium.

“this gift will help transform paci into a space where our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will be inspired in their studies,” said 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 faculty of law dean lee stuesser. “i’m very thankful for the support of the paterson foundation.”

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researchers are receiving more than $1.5 million from the social sciences and humanities research council of canada (sshrc) for exciting projects relating to new media, first nations renewable energy initiatives and economic development, weight bias and more.

sshrc’s insight grants aim to build knowledge and understanding about people, societies and the world by supporting research excellence in the social sciences and humanities.

dr. sandra jeppesen, assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies at lakehead orillia and coordinator of media studies for social change, has been awarded an insight grant of $497,482 over five years for her program of research, indymedia 2.0: new media activism in the digital economy. this is the largest insight grant that lakehead has ever received.

“this sshrc grant will allow us to deepen our understanding of grassroots global media activist networks, politics and strategies in the digital media landscape,” said dr. jeppesen.

the seven-person feminist research team, which includes co-applicant dr. adrienne hurley of east asian studies at mcgill university and various 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , will examine anti-racist, queer, anti-colonial, anti-capitalist and anarchist media practices by interviewing 150 grassroots activists around the world to analyze how they are adapting old and new technologies to support radical social movements.

“this project will also create a network of feminist activist-scholars and facilitate the development of online resources for grassroots media activists,” dr. jeppesen added.

dr. chander shahi, associate professor and chair of the forest science program at lakehead thunder bay, is receiving an insight development grant of $73,000 to examine first nations renewable energy initiatives and economic development in northern ontario.

this funding enables dr. shahi to meet with more than 30 first nation communities in northern ontario and hire four first nation 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 to assist with the research.

“the goal is to create a policy framework for a new renewable energy model that can help first nation communities with economic development opportunities,” dr. shahi said.

this project is the result of an expressed interest by the ontario power authority (opa) and the ontario sustainable energy association (osea), along with community leaders, to understand the role of the renewable energy sector in the economic development of northern ontario’s first nation communities.

these communities often struggle to survive due to limited shelter, health care, transportation networks and electricity, with many relying on expensive diesel-generated electricity.

the use of renewable energy to improve the socio-economic status of first nation communities provides an important opportunity. this project will identify, explore and create community-based policy alternatives for renewable energy that will enhance the sustainability of these first nations communities.

erin cameron is in lakehead's joint phd program in educational studies and her field of study is social, cultural & political contexts of education. cameron is receiving a sshrc doctoral fellowship award of $40,000 over two years for her project, reclaiming the other f-word: addressing weight-based oppression in higher education.

“this sshrc funding allows me to focus on my research, which is aimed at developing teaching strategies that will help to reduce weight bias and help 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 understand that obesity is more complex than just calories in and calories out,” cameron said.

“we live in a society where we are bombarded with messages about obesity, where we have become obsessed with the thin ideal as a marker of health, yet evidence points to the fact that it is fitness not fatness that matters. as a result, weight bias is now more prevalent in schools and health care and it’s been suggested that there’s unintentional harm being caused because of that,” she said. “i hope my work will start to change how we teach and think about obesity in schools and universities.”

cameron will interview faculty members specializing in kinesiology, health sciences, psychology, geography and other disciplines from universities around the world.

“these impressive research projects show that 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 is making an impact on society in many important ways,” said lakehead president and vice-chancellor, dr. brian stevenson.

ontario’s first faculty of law in 44 years officially opened its doors, today, with a large ribbon cutting ceremony at lakehead’s port arthur collegiate institute (paci), home to the university’s newest faculty. attendees of this historic event included the school’s first cohort of 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and faculty, as well as dignitaries and ontario premier kathleen wynne.

the inaugural class will teach 60 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 everything they need to know to be lawyers and more, by focusing on aboriginal law and understanding aboriginal issues, the needs of small practitioners and natural resources law.

professor lee stuesser, founding dean of the faculty of law, was excited that the grand opening had finally arrived.

“this is a great day for 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , for thunder bay, and indeed for northern ontario. a new law school is opening that is different and that is intended to serve the communities in northern ontario and in smaller centres throughout canada,” dean stuesser said. “a new law school is born. it is small; it is personal; and it is tailored to prepare 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 for professional practice.

“the faculty of law at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 is a creation of the community. many said it would never happen – they were wrong. the communities in northwestern ontario fought for this school and together they succeeded. we are very proud of this new school and thunder bay should be proud,” stuesser said.

lakehead’s new faculty of law will educate lawyers who will play a vital role in northwestern ontario for first nation, métis and inuit communities. the faculty will provide its 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 with a fundamental legal education, while focussing on aboriginal law, natural resources law, and single or sole practitioner law.

“this faculty of law is in the north for the people of the north,” said lakehead president and vice-chancellor, dr. brian stevenson. “our focus is on preparing 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 who wish to practice law in rural and smaller centres, where there is a need to enhance and increase access to justice.”

“on behalf of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , i welcome our new law 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , staff and faculty, and hope they decide to stay in northern ontario to help fill the demand in this region,” dr. stevenson added. “we are also extremely grateful to the provincial government, first nation and métis communities, our local mpp’s, bill mauro and michael gravelle, the county and district law presidents’ association, municipal organizations across northwestern ontario, and the thunder bay law association for their support in establishing this new and special faculty of law.”

in july 2011, ontario’s ministry of training, colleges and universities (mtcu) committed to support 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s faculty of law. the mtcu fully funded the faculty of law with a $1.5 million investment for capital improvements made to the historic paci building in thunder bay where the faculty of law is housed.

canadian semiconductor conference will be held in thunder bay

the 16^th canadian semiconductor science and technology conference (csstc 2013) will attract more than 100 professors, graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , researchers and industry representatives to thunder bay next week.

hosted by 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and the thunder bay regional research institute (tbrri), csstc 2013 brings together the brightest canadian minds from universities, research institutions and industries to discuss the latest semiconductor research.

this is the first time the conference has been held in thunder bay. it will be at the best western nor’wester hotel & conference centre from monday, aug. 12 to friday, aug. 16, 2013.

“the fact that the semiconductor science and technology conference is being held in thunder bay shows that tbrri and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 are doing excellent research into semiconductors and how the technology can further the design of semiconductor devices,” said dr. dimiter alexandrov, an electrical engineering professor at lakehead who is the head of the university’s semiconductor research lab and conference co-chair.

“the conference will bring new, high tech commercial opportunities to the thunder bay region, such as solar cells, light emitting diodes (leds) and semiconductor lasers,” said dr. alexandrov, who has spent nearly 30 years researching semiconductors and electronic devices.

dr. alla reznik, a physics professor at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and tbrri scientist and, is also a conference co-chair. in september, 2012, dr. reznik received a $1.6 million grant from the natural sciences and engineering research council to train highly qualified personnel in medical imaging detector technologies.

“this conference not only brings together the best canadian minds specializing in semiconductor science and technology but also provides an excellent opportunity for young investigators and graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to be a part of the canadian scientific community and talk with accomplished professors, industry partners, and potential employers,” reznik said.

dr. reznik is a canada research chair in physics of molecular imaging and an expert in wide band gap semiconductors. she is working on the application of novel semiconductor materials for x-ray and gamma-ray medical imaging detectors.

“this conference allows tbrri to further its status on a global research stage and to contribute to the consistent development of a knowledge/research based economy,” said dr. roxanne deslauriers, acting ceo of the thunder bay regional research institute. “it is a testament to the recent growth of medical research activity here. this conference would not have been held in this region just a few years ago.”

lakehead 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ’ cross-canada foodride to build food security with 22 food drives

this summer, two 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will cycle coast to coast across canada, cooperatively organizing 22 food drives along the 10,000 km route.

under the name foodride, the team strives to raise more than $100,000 in food and monetary donations for canadian food banks. donations will be distributed between community and campus food banks in the cities hosting the drives.

“we aim to create an open dialogue around food security,” explains foodride cyclist adrian arts. “food banks were created as a temporary emergency service in the early 80s and are now a daily necessity to a growing population. as a country we need to re-evaluate how we feed ourselves and where that food comes from.”

the journey begins thursday, april 25, 2013 in victoria, bc, and ends with a final food drive in st. john’s, nfld, on sunday, sept. 8.

approximately 900,000 canadians relied on access to food banks in an average month in 2011, according to the recent food banks canada report, hunger count 2012. findings of the united nations’ human rights council’s report from its special rapporteur on the right to food (in canada) suggest that many canadians report being hungry, but are not eating due to lack of financial means.

the report states that the growing inadequacy of access to safe, healthy food in many parts of canada brings into question the foundations of canada’s food security and the path the country is heading down.

the foodride team brings action to the issue by cooperatively organizing food drives with community and campus food banks in every province. although foodride will not cycle through the territories, online donations to the cause will be shared with food banks in the territories’ capitals.

lakehead steel bridge team places first in regional competition

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s steel bridge team placed first overall against eight other teams in the annual regional competition held saturday, march 16 at iowa state university.

with the victory, the lakehead team of civil engineering 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 advances to the us national steel bridge competition in seattle at the end of may for the 13^th time in the past 15 years of competing.

世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 natalie scalese, joe anger, randy roth, cody johnston and raquel almeida comprised the lakehead team with faculty advisor dr. tony gillies. kailash bhatia acted as machinist advisor to the team.

the lakehead team placed first overall – taking second place for display, first for lightness, first for construction speed, second for stiffness, first for construction economy (based on construction time and bridge weight) and first for structural efficiency (based on bridge weight to stiffness ratio).

“sometimes what we pictured didn’t pan out in real life. we had to design as we went, leading up to the competition,” said natalie scalese.

the competition challenged 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to design a steel bridge and then fabricate a 17-foot long, 1:10 scale model of it that satisfied the 40-pages of specifications provided to all teams. the group had to take their bridge from their computer model, build it and then test it.

“we learned that what we assumed and what the computer model gave us didn’t always match up with what worked,” said raquel almeida.

“this competition gave us the hands-on experience of what happens in real life. the computer calculates things too perfectly – we have to account for the small tolerances,” almeida said.

the bridge had to be constructed over a river from foundations set back from the river banks. leading up to the competition, the bridge was designed and the components were fabricated by 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“coming from a small university, it was awesome to be up against such notable schools,” said joe anger. “some teams had dozens of people – we only have five people on our team. it was amazing to be so successful,” he said.

faculty advisor dr. tony gillies said he was proud of the team. “阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 has established a reputation for excellence since we started competing in 1998,” dr. gillies said. “this year’s team is no exception; they have succeeded in designing and constructing another very competitive bridge.”

the national competition, to be held at the university of washington in seattle from may 31-june 1, 2013, will host approximately 45 teams.

“we hope for a strong performance at the national competition,” dr. gillies said, “but so do about 45 other universities.”

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 is pleased to announce its 2013 honorary degree recipients. all honourees will be awarded their respective degrees during thunder bay and orillia campus convocation ceremonies, this may and june.

“on a day when we graduate those who will transform our world, tomorrow, it is fitting that we honour those who have, and continue, to do so, today,” said 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s chancellor-elect, dr. derek burney. “our hope is that our graduates will be inspired by these degree recipients’ deeds and words during this, a very transformative moment in their lives.”

this year’s four recipients are former canadian prime minister, the right honourable paul martin; holocaust survivor and public speaker, dr. eva olsson; lakehead alumni and thunder bay community economic development commission’s john mason; and radiologist and associate professor with the northern ontario school of medicine’s dr. dermot mcloughlin.

“this year, as we graduate the next generation of leaders, we honour four people who have each made vital contributions to our society and communities,” said 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 president and vice-chancellor, dr. brian stevenson. “from fighting poverty and bullying, to enhancing health care and mining in northwestern ontario, our honorary degree recipients are visionaries in their respective missions.”

the right honourable paul martin

the right honourable paul martin leads the martin aboriginal education initiative that aims to reduce the high school dropout rate of canada’s aboriginal youth and increase the number of aboriginal 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 attending post-secondary institutions.

along with his son david, mr. martin also founded the capital for aboriginal prosperity and entrepreneurship fund, whose investments seek to further a culture of economic independence, ownership and entrepreneurship for both on and off reserve aboriginal people through the creation and growth of successful businesses.

mr. martin was the 21st prime minister of canada from 2003 to 2006. he was the minister of finance from 1993 to 2002 when he erased canada’s deficit and virtually paid off canada’s foreign debt. he then recorded five consecutive budget surpluses and restored the financial integrity of the canada pension plan.

dr. eva olsson

for more than 50 years, dr. eva olsson was silent about the concentration camps, slave labour factories, disease and death – including the loss of most of her family – that she experienced during the holocaust.

when her grandson was six-and-a-half years old he asked her how her mother had died. she told him he was too young to hear what happened. when he turned seven he said “i’m older now” and asked her again and eva told him.

“i realized by his actions that children need to know and can truly express feelings of compassion. that’s how it started. shortly after that, his sister had to do a school project about the war so i spoke to her class,” dr. olsson said.

she hopes that the people who hear her story will realize that it’s possible to survive the worst that life has to throw at them.

dr. olsson has spoken at more than 3,000 schools, churches, meeting halls, conferences, colleges and universities, and to more than 1.5 million people throughout canada.

john mason

john mason, a proud 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 geology graduate (hbsc 1975), is currently the project manager-mining services with the thunder bay community economic development commission (cedc).

mr. mason’s goal is to capitalize on business, job, and economic development opportunities for thunder bay and region, specific to the mineral exploration and mining sector.

prior to joining the cedc, mr. mason completed a 36-year career in 2011 as regional manager, resident geologists program, ontario ministry of northern development and mines.

he credits his success in work and life to the education he received at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“lakehead is a national leader in providing quality education and the linkage to job experience in northwestern ontario; that combination equals a career. the concepts and ideas i learned in university played a key role in my decision-making process in work and in life,” mr. mason said.

mr. mason is a registered professional geoscientist in the province of ontario and a member of the following organizations: northwestern ontario prospectors association, ontario prospectors association, canadian institute of mining and metallurgy, prospectors and developers association of canada, and the association of mineral exploration b.c.

dr. dermot mcloughlin

dr. dermot mcloughlin is an award-winning, community-minded staff radiologist with the sioux lookout meno-ya-win health centre who takes pride in the role he has played as an associate professor with the northern ontario school of medicine (nosm) and a founding nosm board member.

dr. mcloughlin received the chris cromarty award for leadership in honour of his effective team work, quality leadership and significant contributions to the well-being of the people of the sioux lookout region.

he started his career in ireland and scotland, working in africa and then ontario where he has practiced as a radiologist in various hospitals.

“i would recommend to all newly graduated health professionals that they should include in their careers working in remote areas at home and abroad where the need for their services is the greatest,” dr. mcloughlin said.

dr. mcloughlin has also received the john c sibley award from mcmaster university in honour of his outstanding contribution to health sciences education and research, and the pope john xxiii medallion for medical services to leprosy patients in africa. he has been a strong supporter of health care in first nations communities. dr. mcloughlin is the founding director of the basic radiography worker training program that has been instrumental in improving health services for aboriginal people throughout the north.

the right honourable paul martin will receive a doctor of laws at the saturday, june 1, 2013 convocation ceremonies at the thunder bay community auditorium.

john mason will receive a doctor of science during the saturday, june 1, 2013 convocation ceremonies at the thunder bay community auditorium.

dr. eva olsson will receive a doctor of humane letters from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 at the saturday, june 8, 2013 convocation ceremonies at the rotary place in the west orillia sports complex.
