sydney van de wiel has never been to thunder bay.

she lives in st. john’s, newfoundland and labrador, but this summer the 17-year-old will spend a month at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

van de wiel is one of 65 high school 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 participating in shad. this year’s group is coming from alberta, ontario, manitoba, quebec, saskatchewan, british columbia, newfoundland and labrador, new brunswick, and nova scotia. “i hope to gain a strong network of passionate and creative youth to support me in future endeavours,” van de wiel said.

世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will live in 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s residence from july 5 to 31. they will attend lectures and participate in workshops given by lakehead faculty on the thunder bay campus.

“shad is an exciting experience for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 . it brings out the best in young people,” said dr. sultan siddiqui, mechanical engineering professor and director of shad lakehead.

“centred on science, technology, engineering and math, shad empowers exceptional youth to make the world a better place,” said barry bisson, shad president.

“shad is where canada’s top youth achievers are exposed to great ideas, inspired to look at things differently, and challenged to reach for the highest levels of excellence,” bisson said.

van de wiel hopes to see the sights that make thunder bay a great place to live. “i believe shad will help develop my leadership skills as well as my confidence,” she said.

lakehead’s provost & vice-president (academic) dr. moira mcpherson is pleased to announce the renewal of dr. bahram dadgostar as dean of the university’s faculty of business administration.

“dr. dadgostar’s renewal acknowledges the dedication and contributions he’s made to the growth and success of his faculty, to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , and to the communities we serve,” said dr. mcpherson.

under dr. dadgostar, lakehead’s faculty of business administration has continued to offer one of the finest undergraduate business programs in canada, as demonstrated by the numerous awards won by its 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 over the years.

dr. dadgostar said he was grateful for receiving unanimous support from those who provided feedback during the decanal renewal process. “i’m thrilled to be renewed as dean, and i look forward to achieving some very important goals in the next four years.”

during what will be his fifth term as dean of the faculty of business administration, dr. dadgostar’s has set his sights on several goals, including enhancing and expanding lakehead’s business programs, establishing a centre for entrepreneurship, and obtaining international accreditation from the association to advance collegiate schools of business.

dr. dadgostar’s academic experience extends 38 years at over six different universities in five countries, including the past 20 years as 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s dean of the faculty of business administration.

after earning his phd from iowa state university in 1977, dr. dadgostar joined 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 as an assistant professor of economics in 1983. three years later, he moved to the faculty of business administration to pursue his interest in finance. since then, dr. dadgostar has shared his academic, research, and professional knowledge and skills with 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , colleagues, and community. his contributions range from helping organizations with their strategic finance initiatives to serving on boards, including as chair of the board of canadian federation of business school deans, and as a member of the executive board of directors of the canadian consortium of management schools. he currently sits on the board of the thunder bay chamber of commerce.

50th anniversary

board of governors upholds province’s tuition framework

in accordance with ontario’s tuition framework, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s board of governors executive committee approved a 3% increase to its 2015–2016 academic year’s tuition fees. the executive committee heard a deputation from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 student union representatives before discussing the matter and voting.

“our executive committee has decided to increase tuition by three percent for lakehead’s 2015–2016 academic year, as outlined in ontario’s tuition framework,” said board of governors chair, murray walberg.

walberg explained that raising the cost of our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ’ tuition is a not a decision the executive committee makes quickly, or takes lightly. “after various discussions and consultations, the executive committee has deemed this necessary in order to keep up with inflation and deferred maintenance costs that increase exponentially above government funding,” he said.

several lakehead strategies, including the university’s international recruitment efforts, have averted the need to cut academic programs, or lay off faculty and staff, during the current, difficult economic challenges facing the province’s post-secondary institutions.

“in the end, we make these decisions in order to maintain the quality education our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 deserve,” walberg added.

lakehead’s school of social work is now the youthrex hub for northwestern ontario

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s department of social work has become northwestern ontario’s hub for the youth research and evaluation exchange (youthrex).

youthrex is a provincially-funded program that allows each hub to engage with small and grassroot youth-serving organizations by providing a variety of supports and resources to help empower young people by involving them in the process.

“the purpose of youthrex is to improve well-being outcomes for youth in ontario,” said dr. david tranter, associate professor in the school of social work at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“in order to accomplish this, we are focusing on three areas: knowledge mobilization, capacity building and customized research and evaluation supports,” dr. tranter said.

as a part of ontario’s youth action plan, youthrex is a province-wide initiative based at york university with five regional hubs across ontario that promote the integration of research evidence and evaluation in the development and delivery of ontario’s programs.

“youthrex is a dynamic and evolving initiative that supports positive youth development included in ontario’s evidence-based strategic framework, stepping up, which identifies seven themes of well-being,” said sarah baum, youthrex northwestern regional hub manager.

the youthrex regional hubs will engage grassroots organizations that serve youth, academic partners, youth and policy stakeholders for capacity-building, knowledge mobilization, and research and evaluation opportunities.

youthrex has received $3.75 million in funding from the ontario ministry of child and youth services with extensive contributions from king’s university college, western university, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , laurentian university and carleton university.

lakehead hosting food forum with diana bronson

lakehead and the food security research network are hosting the annual food forum on thursday, march 12, part of the university’s 10^th annual research and innovation week.

this forum will highlight food security research and related work in the thunder bay region and northwestern ontario.

“this is an important opportunity to highlight some of the excellent work being done on food issues at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and in the thunder bay community,” said dr. rebecca schiff, food forum organizer and assistant professor with lakehead’s department of health sciences.

the day includes presentations from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and professors as well as community members working on food security and sustainable food systems. posters will display 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ’ research and information from community organizations doing important work on food security.

highlights of the event include a talk by diana bronson, executive director of food secure canada. diana’s talk politics, universities, and the food movement looks at universities’ roles in supporting sustainable and healthy food for all.

diana has a professional background in journalism (cbc radio), international human rights, and international climate and technology negotiations at the un.

for the past several years, diana has been leading discussions on the need for a cohesive national food policy operating across all levels of government that would link health, environment, social welfare and agricultural issues to fight a common cause.

diana’s talk is followed by a panel discussion including 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and faculty discussing the importance of healthy and sustainable food for our community. a free, local-food lunch will be served.

lakehead researcher describing mummy’s final days

dr. carney matheson and margaret-ashley veall travelled to italy to study the weapons and tools found with Ötzi the ice man.

march 5, 2015 – thunder bay, on

lakehead anthropology professor dr. carney matheson will describe the final days of europe’s oldest frozen mummy, Ötzi the ice man, during a research and innovation week talk on thursday, march 12.

dr. carney matheson and one of his former 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 travelled to bolzano, italy last year to study the weapons and tools found with Ötzi.

“some people call Ötzi the greatest archaeological discovery of the last century,” dr. matheson said. “he’s one of the oldest natural mummies in the world which is pretty exceptional.”

Ötzi was discovered in 1991 by two german hikers in the italian alps.

the frozen mummy was so well-preserved that police were called to investigate the discovery as a homicide. at 5,300 years of age, Ötzi lived during the neolithic age and is europe’s oldest natural mummy. previous examinations of Ötzi’s tools revealed dna from the blood of four humans. technology found in Ötzi’s possession, such as medicinal fungi, has not been found elsewhere in the neolithic era.

“our work is a fascinating forensic investigation around the last moments of Ötzi’s life,” explained dr. matheson.

the institute of mummies and the iceman, and the south tyrol museum of archaeology requested that dr. matheson replicate analyses of blood traces on the mummy’s equipment and clothing originally performed by dr. matheson’s former supervisor, dr. tom loy. dr. loy was a researcher at the institute for molecular biosciences at the university of queensland, who died before his results could be published.

“there are many publications on Ötzi looking at him from all angles; however dr. loy was the only researcher to examine the mummy’s tools. Ötzi’s tools and equipment could be the key to everything,” dr. matheson said.

dr. matheson’s research team travelled to the south tyrol museum of archaeology, where the 5,300-year-old ice man is housed, in bolzano, italy last year. his team examined approximately 20 artefacts found with Ötzi’s body, including hunting equipment, a first aid kit, medicinal items, and clothing.

dr. matheson brought equipment from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 to perform biochemical analyses of residues found on the artefacts, and to bring samples back to canada for further study.

a major supporter of this historic research endeavour and of dr. matheson’s talk is the institute of italian studies-阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 (iis-lu), which helped fund and equip the research team. crupi consulting group provided shirts and lab coats which identified that the researchers were from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and the institute.

the talk will be at 7:30 pm in the john n. paterson auditorium (pa 3006) at port arthur collegiate institute.

lakehead president & vice-chancellor dr. brian stevenson is pleased to announce that the university’s board of governors has appointed dr. moira mcpherson as the university’s provost & vice-president (academic). as the chief academic officer at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , she leads academic planning, development, and internal operations.

“dr. mcpherson has played integral roles in the development of our organization throughout her career at lakehead,” states dr. brian stevenson. “i am very pleased to be able to continue to work with someone who is so strongly committed to the learner-centred experience and exceptional education our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 deserve.”

dr. mcpherson began her career at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 in 1987 as an assistant professor in the department of physical education and athletics. she holds a phd specializing in applied biomechanics and is regularly sought out for her scholarly and professional expertise in applied kinematic and biomechanical skill analyses by both national and international organizations.

following seven successful years as the director of the school of kinesiology, dr. mcpherson became the university’s associate vice-president (academic) and then took on the role of deputy provost in 2011. dr. mcpherson led the development and implementation of the academic plan, the university’s transition to the institutional quality assurance process, efforts to increase student mobility and college transfer pathways, and most recently the development of the university’s strategic mandate agreement proposal.

as lakehead’s newest provost and vice-president (academic), dr. mcpherson will broaden her contributions to the senior management team, building on her experience as the university’s acting provost & vice-president (academic), acting vice-president (research, economic development & innovation), and interim provost & vice-president (academic).

dr. mcpherson says she’s excited to continue to work with her colleagues across campus to expand initiatives that improve our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ’ learning experiences and their access to the knowledge that a thriving research culture provides.

“i look forward to finding ways to enhance instructional effectiveness in small and large classes, and build engagement with our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 within and beyond the traditional classroom. we need to find the best ways to develop hybrid, online, and telepresence course pedagogies that will expand program delivery on both campuses and beyond.”

nanabijou childcare centre hosts grand opening of new facility

tuesday, december 16, 2014 – thunder bay, on

the nanabijou childcare centre officially opened its doors during the grand opening of its new building located along oliver road on the grounds of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

several dignitaries and government officials attended and spoke at the event that featured a tour of the 8,200-square foot facility, and an overview of the many services available to the university and local community.

funding for the new childcare centre came from several sources, including $1 million from the northern ontario heritage fund corporation (nohfc) and the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 student union (lusu). further in-kind support came from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s financial services department and physical plant, which helped nanabijou throughout the building process, and the thunder bay district social services administration board.

“the nohfc’s contribution of $1 million to the nanabijou childcare centre is an investment in our future,” said michael gravelle, minister of northern development and mines and chair of the nohfc. “it offers childcare and a new infant care program, and prepares the workforce by providing training for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 . we congratulate the supporters of the centre for making this project a reality.”

bill mauro, mpp, thunder bay-atikokan, congratulated the nanabijou childcare centre for its creation of a new infant care program. “this facility enhances the social and cognitive development of children in a safe and healthy environment – and it has also generated new employment and training opportunities within this sector. i’m pleased that our government was able to contribute funding through nohfc. best wishes for continued success,” said mauro.

“our dream became a plan. that plan became a drawing. and the drawing became our new nanabijou childcare centre,” said nanabijou childcare centre director sheila wilhelm. “our new building on 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s campus is as beautiful as the smiles on the faces of parents and children when they come here.”

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 president & vice-chancellor dr. brian stevenson said the new childcare centre represents the exceptional work of the nanabijou board of directors, local government representatives, and the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 community. “this new facility was built by members of our community for our community to support more parents with their daily balancing of work, school, and childcare, as well as the advancement of early childcare education.”

“thanks to the support of ministers gravelle and mauro, and 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s student union, more of our university and thunder bay community members have a state of the art childcare facility to call their own," added dr. stevenson.

ian kaufman, president of lusu, stated that lakehead 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 are proud to support the new on-campus childcare centre so that 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and faculty, as well as other community members, can now access more spots in a beautiful, modern space.

“世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 voted to support this new centre because we wanted to make sure everyone studying at lakehead has the resources to succeed here,” kaufman added. “lakehead’s 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 are increasingly diverse and that brings with it diverse needs. on-campus childcare plays an important role in meeting those expanding needs.”

“this is what happens when a group of volunteers like our board of directors dedicate their minds, talents, time to a good idea,” said tammy squitti, nanabijou board chair. “we are very proud to offer an affordable, accessible, licensed, quality choice for families seeking childcare in thunder bay.”

completed in september 2014, the new nanabijou childcare centre added 38 daycare spots, created eight new full-time jobs, established a new infant care program, and enhanced access to post-secondary training opportunities for early childhood educators.

squitti added, “i would like to thank bridgman collaborative architecture, which did a wonderful job of turning dreams into drawings, and drd construction services, which was an exceptional contractor who did the job well, on time, and on budget.”

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 is seeking exceptional and unconventional research story ideas in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

these story ideas must describe significant research milestones, projects and innovations undertaken by faculty and/or 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 in the last 50 years.

“lakehead’s 50th anniversary provides an excellent opportunity to showcase the university’s past and present research contributions regionally, nationally and internationally,” said dr. andrew dean, vice-president of research, economic development and innovation.

these stories will celebrate the accomplishments of lakehead researchers who will be recognized during the 10th anniversary of research and innovation week in 2015.

each nominee will also be featured on the university’s 50th anniversary web page.

the mission of the 50th anniversary celebration is to recognize lakehead alumni. stories highlighting alumni involvement in research are especially encouraged.
