the raag-rung music circle held its 36th annual fundraising evening of fabulous food and marvelous music on saturday, oct. 19 at the italian cultural centre, which raises funds for student scholarships and the thunder bay symphony orchestra.

what did you do last summer? for 4th-year engineering 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 mohammed elshaer and jonathan hamilton, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. they were lakehead's first participants in the rise-globalink summer research internship program in germany. the program offers canadian undergraduates in all stem fields the opportunity to apply to research internships at universities across germany. internships are held during the summer, usually between 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ' 3rd and 4th year. (there is another program for graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , daad rise professional, for stem-related internships with german companies like siemens, basf, or merck).  successful applicants are funded by mitacs with a $6,000 award.

mohammed´s internship was at the nuremberg campus of technology at the technische hochschule nürnberg. as part of the interdisciplinary research group “human centric ambience,” his work focused on ways that smart building technology can contribute to human health. he also contributed to preparing and submitting a literature review for publication, learning about research publishing in the process. for his internship, jonathan worked with the hybrid energy technologies research group at the institute of new energy systems, technische hochschule ingolstadt. in germany, the electric power grid must integrate energy inputs from multiple renewable sources such as solar, wind, and biogas, which results in fluctuations that need to be smoothed to ensure a stable power supply.  jonathan worked on modelling controls for the electrical distribution grid. 

both men emphasized that the benefits of the experience extended well beyond the learning gained from the research projects. for example, neither had previously considered graduate study or research as a potential career path. but now, they are both considering graduate school and are open to research-related careers. “seeing how they worked, it brings you a new view point, different from canada," said jonathan. “it was not just the research – it was about becoming more well-rounded, an open-minded engineer.”

both agreed that the experience expanded their horizons, and they would strongly recommend the program to other 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .

tuesday, november 19 is national bereavement day. the centre for education and research on aging & health reminds you that grief has a great impact on us emotionally, physically, socially, cognitively and spiritually. today, please think about your family members, friends and others close to you who are grieving or in bereavement, and consider the support they may need.

it’s important to know that support may be needed by those who are grieving before, during and after the course of a loved one’s journey. recognizing their needs and supporting them in coping or healing from a loss is an essential element of care.

there are many grief and bereavement services available in northwestern ontario. please help those who would like or need support by sharing this information with them. click here for a listing of community resources.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 board of governors chair david tamblyn was pleased to announce that following a 15-month search and consultation process, its presidential search committee unanimously recommended that current interim president & vice-chancellor, dr. moira mcpherson, be appointed the university’s next president & vice-chancellor. 

mr. tamblyn said that lakehead’s board of governors voted in support of the search committee’s recommendation.

“dr. mcpherson’s experience and impact in various roles at lakehead, her deep knowledge and understanding of our university and its 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , and her passion for our new strategic plan are just a few of the reasons why we have asked her to lead lakehead in the coming years.”

“on behalf of the board of governors, i would like to thank dr. mcpherson for all that she has achieved as interim president & vice-chancellor,” added mr. tamblyn. “during her distinguished career, her dedication to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 has been unremitting as she has moved from our classrooms through to our senior executive team.”

dr. mcpherson, who has been interim president & vice-chancellor since january 2018, said “it is an absolute honour to be given this opportunity to lead 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .”

during her time as interim president & vice-chancellor, since january 2018, dr. mcpherson has worked with the university’s board of governors to oversee lakehead’s various initiatives and operations through the presidential transition period. highlights include a pledge from the province of $10 million for the gichi kendaasiwin centre, development of the cases building, and the opening of the university teaching commons.

dr. mcpherson officially became the seventh, and first woman president & vice-chancellor of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , effective september 1, 2018.

dr. moira mcpherson became 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s interim president & vice-chancellor in january 2018. prior to that, she served as the institution’s provost & vice-president (academic) since 2012, where she provided strategic leadership for institutional visioning for academic and community connections, international recruitment and partnerships, as well as program development, accreditations, and resource allocations.

dr. mcpherson began her progressive career at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 in 1987 as an assistant professor in the department of physical education and athletics. after seven successful years as director of the school of kinesiology where she established a strong reputation as a dynamic applied scientist and coach facilitator, dr. mcpherson’s effective collaborative leadership approach led her to being named associate vice-president (academic), a position that saw her design and implement some pivotal new academic processes to achieve the university’s academic goals. after stepping in to serve as acting vice-president (academic) in 2010, she was appointed deputy provost in 2011, and subsequently appointed as provost & vice-president (academic) in 2014. 

dr. mcpherson’s understanding of, and commitment to, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 continues to be demonstrated through her capacity for strategic leadership, a purposeful dedication to 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , and her influence on several high impact projects. these projects include the 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 -georgian college partnership, a collaboration that is designed to meet the needs of 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and employers in simcoe county; the gichi kendaasiwin centre, a capital project to support a vibrant indigenous student, faculty and staff presence and foster greater connections with community; and lakehead’stelepresenceinitiative, an immersive classroom experience that provides course opportunities to distant learners in rural and remote communities.

dr. mcpherson led the development and implementation of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s 2012-2017 academic plan, the university’s transition to the institutional quality assurance process, and to a strategic enrolment management framework.  she has led the development of the university’s strategic mandate agreements, and established and continues to guide the implementation of the integrated planning and budgeting process.

dr. mcpherson served two terms on the ontario universities council on quality assurance, was a member of the executive committee for the ontario council of academic vice-presidents, and is the vice-chair of the board of directors for the northern ontario school of medicine.

dr. mcpherson holds a phd specializing in applied biomechanics from the university of alberta, and has been regularly sought out for her scholarly and professional expertise in applied kinematic and biomechanical skill analyses by both national and international organizations.
