阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researchers receiving more than $3 million in funding

december 8, 2021 – thunder bay and orillia, ont.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 professors are able to perform important research thanks to the more than $2.1 million in nserc grants and approximately $1.15 million in funding from partner organizations.

dr. pete hollings, nohfc industrial research chair in mineral exploration and geology professor, is receiving five alliance grants worth $1.03 million and an additional $655,000 from his partner organizations, including clean air metals inc., impala canada, enersoft and generation mining, and wesdome gold mines ltd.

for one of those projects, dr. hollings is receiving $180,000 from nserc and $90,000 from wesdome gold mines to focus on the eagle river complex in the mishibishu greenstone belt – located 50 km west of wawa.

dr. hollings will work with two graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 over the next three years.

“this research will combine traditional and state-of-the-art analytical techniques to characterize the mineralization and alteration system associated with the eagle river complex gold deposits and the mishibishu greenstone belt that hosts them,” dr. hollings said.

he and his team will determine information about the rock formation including its age and geochemical makeup, which they will use to characterize the footprint of the alteration and develop models that wesdome can apply on the property and in their ongoing regional exploration.

dr. amanda diochon, associate professor in geology, is receiving an alliance grant of $172,506 and $107,816 from her partner, grain farmers of ontario to evaluate the effect of land conversion practices on soil health and the yields of barley and oats.

climate change is creating opportunities for agricultural expansion in northern ontario, which will demand the conversion of forest and scrub-brush to productive fields, dr. diochon said.

“we will examine the longer-term effects of land conversion on soil health and soil organic matter to identify the best indicators for monitoring change in soil health here in northern ontario,” she said.

dr. diochon and her team will also establish a field trial to examine the effects of woody residue incorporation, rate of fertilizer application, and rotation strategy on yields of oats and barley.

dr. ashley thomson, assistant professor in the faculty of natural resources management, is receiving an alliance grant of nearly $80,000 and $40,000 from partners resolute forest products and the superior-woods tree improvement association.

dr. ashley thomson

she and her team will develop and validate genomic-assisted breeding models for increased productivity and wood quality for black spruce, one of the most abundant and widely planted tree species in canada’s boreal forest.

“we are aiming to improve the growth and quality of black spruce in northwestern ontario,” dr. thomson said.

traditional tree improvement programs for black spruce in ontario have produced modest gains in growth, but take a long time to achieve, she said.

“with this research, we will test the application of a relatively new approach to improved breeding called genomic selection, to increase the growth per unit time that can be achieved for ontario’s black spruce breeding programs.”

this will be the first study that evaluates the accuracy of genomic selection applied to an operational breeding program of black spruce in ontario.

“congratulations to each researcher and a special thanks to nserc and all funding partners for these awards,” said dr. andrew p. dean, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s vice-president, research and innovation.

“the nserc alliance program ensures that applied research is well supported. the outcomes from these projects will have direct impact on economies in northern ontario and simcoe county.”

the research support fund is a federal funding program for post-secondary institutions in canada to support some of the costs associated with managing research funded by the canadian institutes of health research, natural sciences and engineering research council, and social sciences and humanities research council.

in 2020/21, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 received nearly $2 million in assistance from the research support fund to support the indirect costs of research, which includes costs for supporting the management of intellectual property, research and administration, ethics and regulatory compliance, research resources, and research facilities.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 -led research team receiving $1.2 million to investigate cancer prevention using traditional healing

november 18, 2021 – thunder bay, ont.

a 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 professor and her research team in partnership with traditional knowledge holders and waasegiizhig nanaandawe'iyewigamig health access centre (wnhac) are receiving $1.2 million in cihr funding to explore the efficacy of using traditional healing to prevent cancer.

dr. lana ray, assistant professor in indigenous learning at lakehead and the university’s indigenous research chair in decolonial futures, will work with wnhac, traditional knowledge holders, and researchers from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , nipissing university and the university of toronto to carry out the work over five years.

this project will implement traditional healing activities to address the impacts of colonialism in wnhac’s service area. it will evaluate the impacts of the intervention through a pre- and post-design that will explore and measure risks and protective factors.

using an indigenous mixed methods research approach, this study will privilege indigenous ways of knowing and doing and tangible outcomes for indigenous communities through the implementation of medicine camps and traditional health practitioner visits.

dr. ray explained the importance of examining cancer prevention using traditional healing methods.

“we need to stop framing prevalent risk factors of cancer as such and start thinking about them as symptoms of colonialism,” dr. ray said.

“when we do this, we also begin to think of cancer as a symptom of colonialism, which allows for expanded approaches to primary and secondary cancer prevention.”

colonialism is fundamentally about severing anishinaabe peoples’ deep spiritual relationships to land. the anti-thesis to that is anishinaabe systems of traditional healing that are grounded in a deep love and respect for the land and the knowledge that it possesses, dr. ray explained.

“because of the resiliency and foresight of our ancestors, our practices and philosophies of traditional healing have not been lost. to restore mino-bimaadiziwin (the good life), we must look to those in our nations who possess this knowledge, and i am so grateful that as the principal investigator on this project, i am able to support the work of traditional knowledge holders and learn from them,” she said.

the project team includes serena joseph, program manager at wnhac; traditional knowledge holders; kathy bird from peguis first nation; katherine fobister from asubpeeschoseewagong first nation; roy napish from eagle lake first nation; ken nash from northwest angle 37; jimmy wayendowpanicken; robert charles greene and sarah mandamin from iskatewizaagegan no.39; and phyllis shaugabay from washagamis bay.

researchers include dr. anna koné from lakehead’s department of health sciences, dr. cindy peltier from the faculty of arts and science and the faculty of education and professional studies at nipissing university, and dr. walter wodchis from the institute of health policy, management and evaluation at the university of toronto.

“we are excited to privilege indigenous intelligence as an effective approach to health and well-being,” said anita cameron, wnhac executive director. “through the mino-bimaadiziwin research project we will more than double access to traditional healing in our catchment area.”

dr. andrew p. dean commended the research team for their dedication and hard work.

“congratulations to dr. ray and her project members on obtaining this research grant from cihr and a thank you to the agency for the funding,” said dr. dean, lakehead’s vice-president, research and innovation.

“cancer treatments need to be done hand in hand with screening and also with understanding causes. this project identifies common risk factors for cancer among the indigenous population as directly related to the impact of colonialism. acknowledging this correlation and drawing upon traditional healing methods are the key components of this project,” he added.

the cihr delivered this funding in partnership with the global alliance for chronic disease.

message from the office of the president

image

canadians around the world will soon join together to remember and to pay tribute to the contributions and the sacrifices by those who have served and to recognize those who still proudly wear a uniform today.

we will do so on november 8th for indigenous veterans day, and on november 11th for remembrance day.

on these days, we remember all of their brave deeds and sacrifices, especially those who gave more than we could know so that we would have the freedoms we enjoy today.

generations of indigenous and non-indigenous people fought to protect the land they came from and for the place we continue to build together. we wear the symbol of remembrance, the poppy, as a reminder and recognition of their supreme sacrifice.

this year marks the 20th anniversary of the start of the war in afghanistan - a conflict in which over 40,000 members of the canadian armed forces served, and 165 canadians (158 soldiers and seven civilians) were killed.

thousands of other veterans of that war were wounded physically and psychologically, and they continue to be impacted by both their experiences and the ongoing events unfolding in afghanistan today.

i encourage you to reflect and remember, and, if you are able, to partake in local events - such as the indigenous veterans day ceremony and exhibit in lakehead thunder bay's agora on monday, nov. 8 or on the same day visit the indigenous veterans day exhibit in the orsi family learning commons.

you could also attend virtual commemorations from around the world throughout the week, including on the the royal canadian legion's official facebook page.

to learn more about indigenous veterans day and the first nations, métis and inuit peoples' history of military service in canada, please visit the indigenous peoples page of veterans affairs canada's website.

i invite all members of our 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 community, no matter where you are around the world, to take a moment on november 8th, and another on november 11th at 11:00 am, to remember.

lest we forget,

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 hosting treaties recognition week from nov. 1 to 5

october 29, 2021 – orillia and thunder bay, ont.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 is hosting virtual treaties recognition week events daily from monday, nov. 1 to friday, nov. 5, as well as an in-person display provided by nishnawbe aski nation (nan).

“we look forward to celebrating treaties recognition week with 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , faculty, and staff at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , and with people throughout thunder bay and simcoe county,” said denise baxter, vice-provost, indigenous initiatives.

in 2016, ontario passed legislation declaring the first week of november as treaties recognition week. this annual event honours the importance of treaties and helps 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and residents of ontario learn more about treaty rights and relationships.

lakehead will kickoff the week on monday, nov. 1 at 12:30 pm with an opening ceremony featuring remarks from chief ted williams from chippewas of rama first nation, chief peter collins from fort william first nation, and dr. david barnett, lakehead’s provost and vice-president (academic).

elder gene nowegejick will begin the ceremony with a prayer. dr. gina starblanket, associate professor in indigenous governance at the university of victoria, will provide a talk called seeding our futures.

she is the principal investigator of the prairie indigenous relationality network. her research discusses questions of treaty implementation, prairie indigenous life, gender and indigenous feminism.

nan’s community building exhibit includes 16 panels that have information on treaties and the history of residential schools. this display is set up outside 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 – in between the chancellor paterson library and the agora circle.

nishnawbe aski nation launched this community building campaign and large-scale interactive display at the wake the giant festival earlier this summer. developed by the nan education department, the project was funded by the ontario ministry of education as part of recommendations identified through the seven youth inquest in 2016, to address racism experienced by 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 attending school in thunder bay.

it covers treaty relationships and aims to dispel myths in a way that participants can engage at their own pace. this display also highlights many of the realities faced by first nations peoples. the panels will be on display at future community events.

lakehead welcomes everyone to the nan exhibit, but please be aware that, while the university has implemented preventative measures to reduce the spread of illness in general and of covid-19 in particular, which is a highly contagious and dangerous disease, the university cannot guarantee that participants will not become infected with covid-19 and/or other diseases.

by joining the  event, each participant agrees that they do so at their own risk and that they accept the risk of infection with covid-19 and other illnesses, and that they release and agree to hold harmless 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 from any and all liability for any illness or harm to anyone consequent upon the participant becoming infected with covid-19 and/or any other disease as a result of involvement in the display.

visitors to campus must be fully vaccinated and be able to provide proof of vaccination using lakehead’s mobile safety app. anyone entering a building on campus must also do the covid-19 screening located on the mobile safety app.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researcher publishes experimental research on sustainable energy

photo of dr. dimiter alexandrov

dr. dimiter alexandrov

october 18, 2021 – thunder bay, ont.

a 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 professor has published experimental research that suggests a potential new sustainable energy source could be generated using non-radioactive nuclear fusion.

dr. dimiter alexandrov’s research paper, low energy nuclear fusion reactions in solids: experiments, was published in the international journal of energy research in june 2021.

professor alexandrov is the head of lakehead’s semiconductor research laboratory and teaches in electrical engineering. he said it might be possible to develop the technology into prototypes for real-world applications, which could help address climate change by introducing an alternative green energy source to replace fossil fuels.

“this could be a major achievement in the search for a truly sustainable energy source that does not produce carbon emissions or any radioactive waste,” dr. alexandrov said.

“this non-radioactive nuclear fusion technology has enormous potential as we seek clean, renewable energy solutions to replace fossil fuels.”

replicable experiments conducted by professor alexandrov confirm that nuclear energy is released in the interaction of deuterium, a widely available non-radioactive hydrogen isotope, with solid matter as the recent experiments carried out show significant energy release.

“unlike other nuclear energy sources, this technology would not generate any radioactivity or produce radioactive waste. it is scalable and has the potential to be deployed in remote communities here in canada and across the world, and in mobile locations on land, sea, and even in space,” said dr. alexandrov.

dr. andrew p. dean, lakehead’s vice-president, research and innovation, congratulated dr. alexandrov on this exciting publication.

“the search for nuclear fusion energy is one of the most significant research areas currently underway, and this experimental work is revealing some very interesting results,” dr. dean said.

county of simcoe presents final instalment of $10-million pledge

july 22, 2021 – orillia, ont.

on behalf of county council, county of simcoe warden george cornell officially announced the final instalment of a 10-year commitment from the county of simcoe to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

the final $500,000 instalment completes a $10-million pledge from the county of simcoe, which was approved by county council in 2009, to improve access to postsecondary education across the region.

“our investment in postsecondary educational institutions supports our economy, helps to expand our labour market and provides local access to world-class education for our residents, including the 756 simcoe county 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 currently enrolled at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ,” said warden george cornell.

“our 10-year funding commitment of $10 million has supported lakehead’s innovative programming, and ensures that simcoe county has job-ready candidates to help grow our 16,000 area businesses. this has been a two-way partnership, as lakehead has embraced our region, supported economic development efforts, and worked with the county on social and community service initiatives. having a world-class university in simcoe county is great for our own 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and helps to promote our region across the province and country.”

for dr. moira mcpherson, president and vice-chancellor of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , support from the county has ensured that the university can continue to provide access and unique pathways to education, and extensive opportunities for learning and research.

“lakehead and county council have something very special in common: we believe in the important role that postsecondary education plays in creating healthy, thriving communities,” explained mcpherson.

since the opening of simcoe hall in 2010, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 has improved access to stem (science, technology, engineering, and math) programming with the addition of four degree-diploma programs through the lakehead-georgian partnership; expanded the teacher education program to include intermediate/secondary level training; and, opened the doors to improve access to continuing education and professional training opportunities with the establishment of the office of community engagement and lifelong learning.

the impact of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 also extends beyond the borders of the orillia campus and into our communities – from collingwood to new lowell, midland to severn bridge – where 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 are living, working, and contributing to the social and cultural fabric of their community: completing co-operative education placements, working in local businesses, and giving back through volunteering and community service learning. annually, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 contributes $85-to $100 million to the local economy.

“with the consistent, generous support of county council over the last 10 years, lakehead has improved access to education by breaking down barriers and offering every student the opportunity to have a transformative educational experience,” mcpherson said. “the most important outcome of your investment in our university is the success of our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , our graduates, and the citizens of tomorrow.”

lakehead orillia principal dr. dean jobin-bevans, reflecting on the impact of the orillia campus on the region over the past decade, stated, “the county of simcoe’s outstanding support of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 continues to have a significant impact on our local communities, but most especially on the 1,600 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 studying on our campus – many of whom hail from simcoe county. we are proud to be an important part of their journey, and of their life-changing university experience.”

since 2009, the lakehead orillia campus has grown from 819 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to 1,662 today, 45 per cent come from across simcoe county. in 2020-2021, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 experienced a 53 per cent increase in the number of graduate 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 at the orillia campus. as well as a 15 per cent increase in the number of international 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 at lakehead orillia this year alone. today, there are a total of 2,511 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 alumni – from thunder bay and orillia – living and working in simcoe county.

july 15, 2021 – thunder bay, ont.

a team comprised of individuals from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and thunder bay fire rescue gathered together on thursday, july 15 to celebrate the research and innovation award of excellence that was announced in march.

their research focused on developing occupational health and safety strategies to address on-the-job exposures linked to mental health concerns.

“our results identified how critical incident exposure manifests in psychological injury and the impacts of delivering components of the thunder bay fire rescue critical incident stress management program on members of the critical incident response team (cirt), said dr. kathryn sinden, associate professor in kinesiology at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

dr. sinden has spent the last few years working on this research with chief greg hankkio, thunder bay fire rescue, division chief of administration dennis brescacin from thunder bay fire rescue and president of the thunder bay professional firefighters association, and first class firefighter regan bolduc from thunder bay fire rescue, who is the self-contained breathing apparatus technician.

a significant impact of the research is that bolduc, supported by chief hankkio and brescacin, has led meetings with the cirt and joint health and safety committee to discontinue defusing as a strategy to mitigate negative effects of high exposure calls.

“as the primary knowledge user on this work, firefighter bolduc collaborated with the various health and safety committees within tbfr and utilized the research results to inform changes to the role and mandate of the cirt including development of a psychological health and safety committee,” dr. sinden said.

the committee has replaced the cirt and redirected focus towards identifying and providing mental health resources as support for firefighters with thunder bay fire rescue.

“our research has also had a positive impact on tbfr and indirectly, the communities they serve,” dr. sinden said.

“for example, our research focus on firefighter mental health has opened discussions in the fire stations, which has aided in reducing the long-standing stigma associated with mental health in the fire service.”

this research has also informed development of an evidence-based approach for managing firefighter mental health. protecting firefighters’ physical and mental health ensures that they can continue to serve and protect in a way that ensures a safer wider community.

“our research has demonstrated sustainable impact within tbfr particularly with modification to the cirt and the subsequent proposal of the psychological health and safety committee,” dr. sinden said.

at the research and innovation awards of excellence ceremony held virtually in march, dr. sinden and her research team received the community-engaged research award for their project, “protecting those who protect us: supporting development of a mental health management strategy for thunder bay fire rescue.”

“congratulations to dr. sinden and her partners at the thunder bay fire rescue and thunder bay professional firefighters' association for receiving the 2021 community engaged research award,” said dr. andrew p. dean, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s vice-president, research and innovation.

“this award celebrates applied research with direct outcomes for community needs, an area of research that is core to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 research and innovation. this project is an excellent example of such research, and we are certainly pleased to celebrate the achievements of this partnership,” he said.

dr. sinden and her team conducted this research thanks to two grants from the canadian institutes of health research.

dr. tarlok sahota receives the distinguished agronomist award

dr. tarlok sahota, speaking at an international conference in 2017, has
received the distinguished agronomist award.

july 9, 2021 – thunder bay, ont.

dr. tarlok sahota, director of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s agricultural research station, has won the distinguished agronomist award given out annually by the canadian society of agronomy (csa).

the distinguished agronomist award is presented to members of the csa in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the science and technology of growing and using plants in agriculture for food, fuel, fiber, recreation, and land restoration.

this year it was handed out virtually due to covid-19, during the csa’s annual conference being held this week.

“thank you to the canadian society of agronomy for this recognition and to all of my colleagues who nominated me and wrote letters of support for me for this award,” dr. sahota said.

“i am honoured to accept this award, which is a recognition of my work for the betterment of the farming community, and pleased to have spent many years working on soils and crops with excellent co-workers.”

in her letter bestowing the award upon dr. sahota, dr. sheri strydhorst, chair advisory committee csa, said the award committee was highly impressed with his distinguished career and countless contributions to the field of agronomy through research, teaching, training and outreach activities.

“your deep commitment to the csa including serving as president elect, president, and past president, organizing annual technical conferences, serving on award committees, and receiving the 2018 csa fellow award, were specifically noted and are highly commendable,” dr. strydhorst said.

“you are an incredibly passionate scientist, who has made a substantial and wide-ranging contribution to the field through your leadership, collaborations, and deep involvement in canadian agronomy.”

dr. yousef a. papadopoulos, research scientist, agriculture and agri-food canada and faculty at dalhousie university, nominated dr. sahota for the award because dr. sahota was able to obtain his research funding on his own and lead a very productive agronomy research/technology transfer program.

he was able to lead and sustain a private research station (2004-‘18) with no guaranteed funding and was instrumental in its transition to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 in 2018, lending stability to it.

his marvelous ability to relate his research to producers’ current and future needs has been acknowledged by many organizations across the region and the country.

dr. sahota was able to increase farm productivity and incomes through diversification of cropping systems by introducing several new crops and crop varieties; identification and rectification of sulphur, zinc and boron deficiencies; initiating long-term experiments on tillage, crop rotations, lime and wood ash, manure and macro/micro nutrients and maximum yield and persistence in alfalfa; communicating results from these experiments to the farmers; and working on and introducing best nutrient management practices such as applying nitrogen from multiple nitrogen sources, seed row placement of part nitrogen as environmentally smart nitrogen (esn), etc.

dr. sahota was the first in ontario to initiate research on esn in field crops in 2006 and due to his research and extension efforts, ontario farmers started applying esn in 2009. prosperity on farms is quite obvious in his area of operation in northwestern ontario.

dr. tom bruulsema, chief scientist at plant nutrition canada, sent a letter of support for dr. sahota’s nomination.

“dr. sahota has provided strong leadership to the thunder bay agricultural research station and has earned the respect and trust of local farmers through the dissemination of relevant agronomic information from the research trials he has managed,” dr. bruulsema said.

“in addition, he was responsible for seeking the funding support for this research. without his dedicated efforts, this research would not have happened, as the research station was on the verge of closing several times.

“the fact that he managed to keep it viable, during a period when many other research stations and colleges of agricultural technology actually did close across the province of ontario, is a testament to his commitment to the scientific discipline of agronomy. the transition to its affiliation with 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 brings a welcome scientific recognition to this agronomic research work, and bodes well for the stability of the institution into the future. the farmers of northern ontario stand to benefit greatly,” dr. bruulsema said.

“the crop nutrition industry has particularly appreciated the extensive research and extension conducted on the topic of secondary and micronutrient fertilizers, along with enhanced efficiency nitrogen fertilizers.

“this work has resulted in the identification of deficiencies that limit nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiency, and has identified viable strategies to improve those efficiencies along with the productivity of the agricultural system. dr. sahota has provided valuable data for development of recommendations by the ontario soil management research and services committee,” he said.

“northern ontario representatives of the ontario soil and crop improvement association have spoken to me commending the value and relevance of his research. dr. sahota’s research, and his numerous extension articles, have been highly valued by the certified crop advisers of ontario. in addition, his work is often featured in the ontario farmer newsweekly, one of the most influential farm publications in the province of ontario,” dr. bruulsema said.

“congratulations to dr. sahota for receiving this very distinguished award,” said dr. andrew p. dean, lakehead’s vice-president, research and innovation.

“the research being done at luars under the scientific oversight of tarlok is an important component for fostering development of the agricultural sector for northwestern ontario,” dr. dean added.

this is dr. sahota’s second award in the past three years; the first one was the csa fellow award in 2018.

the award includes a suitably engraved plaque, free conference registration, a speaking slot of at least 30 minutes at the csa annual general meeting (agm)/conference and up to $2,500 for travel expenses to present at the agm. this year’s conference is virtual because of covid-19.
