photo of dr. vijay mago

dr. vijay mago, chair and associate professor in computer science, is creating the program to serve indigenous youth in grades 7 to 10 across northwestern ontario.

“in addition to the coding skills gained through the delivery of programming, our intention is to encourage youth to pursue a career in stem (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and to enroll in high school courses that are prerequisites in the post-secondary fields,” dr. mago said.

the results of dr. mago’s work will introduce indigenous youth to modern computer science skills and approaches through a consistent six-week program delivered by a skilled computer science graduate student as a new component of existing niijii mentorship programming that serves over 4,000 indigenous 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 per year.

lisa harris, coordinator of the niijii indigenous mentorship program at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , will facilitate both virtual and in-person delivery of the programming.

“the promoscience grant in support of our niijii indigenous mentorship coding program is an investment in indigenous youth in northwestern ontario,” harris said.

“our goal is to increase opportunities for youth to enter into stem-based education and eventually into stem-based careers. the ultimate goal is for those same youth to have the option of working in a computer science/stem career from their home communities, to build capacity and sustainability across the north,” she added.

the office of indigenous initiatives will work with the department of computer science to offer computer programming to the youth of whitesand and gull bay first nations, said denise baxter, vice-provost, indigenous initiatives.

“the nserc promo-science funding grant allows niijii and the department of computer science to enhance ontario’s current coding curriculum while providing fundamental skills development to prepare indigenous youth for today's fast-paced and technology-centred world,” baxter said.

this program will inspire youth to pursue stem-based education and careers in the fields of computer science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

it will also increase the potential for indigenous youth in northern and remote communities to access high-demand, high-paying stem careers that can be done remotely or in person, and support the delivery of technology and resource distribution so technologies are accessible to these communities.

“we are very fortunate to be working in partnership with the niijii indigenous mentorship program and dr. vijay mago at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ,” said corey dagenais, principal of armstrong public school.

“the goal of this program is to use coding to support 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 in developing a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.

“co-teaching opportunities with 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and classroom teachers will enhance mathematical thinking and benefit our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 as they begin to solve problems and create computational representations of mathematical situations using code,” dagenais said.

aj keene, superintendent of education at lakehead public schools, said the school board appreciates its partnership with 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“coding is new to the elementary mathematics curriculum and it is a subject area that has been received extremely well by 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , educators, and parents alike,” keene said.

“we anticipate that our indigenous 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will benefit greatly from participating in this project, as it combines research and practical classroom experience. the results of the research will hopefully inspire the further implementation of coding in classrooms to apply the learnings collected from this study,” keene said.

research in action: wireless monitoring of sewer pipes can crack savings down the line

may 2021, by julio heleno gomes

with spring around the corner and the ground beginning to thaw, a device being developed by a 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 researcher could be a new tool for the city of thunder bay to improve inspection of its network of underground sanitary sewer pipes.

wireless unitusing a probe outfitted with sensors and a camera, this device could detect sewer defects and pipe damage, which would benefit the city’s wastewater system.

“we hope the device is easy to use and will successfully detect infiltration above and below the sewer surface inside the collection pipe,” says michelle warywoda, director of environment, infrastructure and operations for the city of thunder bay.

“we hope that results from the sewer pipe inspections with the device will inform the city’s sanitary sewer system capital replacement and rehabilitation program.”

dr. azimi

dr. amir azimi is working on a project to detect faults along the city’s 515 kilometres of sanitary sewer pipes. during spring snow melt or severe rainfall, heavy moisture infiltrates the ground and if there’s a crack in the sewer additional water will flow into the collection system, mixing with sewage.

conventional inspection and monitoring is done via closed circuit tv cameras, which is labour intensive and requires trained operators.

“that’s not feasible and is very expensive,” azimi says of that method.

an associate professor in the department of civil engineering, azimi’s research focus is hydraulics and environmental fluid mechanics.

in the case of sewer pipes, residential wastewater is typically at room temperature (in the 20 c range), whereas water from snowmelt is only about 5 c. the resulting temperature difference would indicate a flaw somewhere in the drainage pipe.

azimi’s device consists of a temperature probe, thermal camera, gps locator, battery and memory card. it would maneuver through the pipe and take temperature readings. it can record differences of as little as one degree celsius.

“we drop it in a manhole, it flows with the sewage, we retrieve it downstream, grab the data and look at the temperature variations,” azimi says of how the device will be utilized. “if the temperature is constant, it’s ok. but at one line it could be 18 degrees, 18 degrees and then it drops to 14 degrees and then goes back to 18. when the temperature goes down, you know something is going on in the pipe.

“this is not very difficult to measure and it’s very fast and cheap.”

by detecting defects in the sewer pipes, rehabilitation work can be targeted by sending closed-circuit tv cameras to a specific spot to verify there’s a problem. this will reduce the infiltration of groundwater into the sanitary sewer system, warywoda explains.

azimi has been working on this device with a team of 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 : graduate student xunjia liang and undergraduates gurpreet chaggar and adam talbot.

along with grants from the natural sciences and engineering research council of canada, azimi has also received support from the city. he has been working on a combination of sensors and five different prototypes. but the device is not yet ready to be used in the field.

“that was not the plan for the funding,” azimi says. “funding was for the proof of concept, to see if we could build the submarine device and to see if the sensors would work.”

due to covid-19 the next stage in the project development is currently on hold but will resume once the graduate student researchers are able to reconvene.

when things return to normal, azimi hopes to run more tests, such as try to determine the rate of flow through a crack and the minimal difference in temperatures the probe could detect. the concept has other applications, such as measuring the salinity of lakes or the ph levels of industrial discharge.

the potential of wireless monitoring of sewer pipes is enough that warywoda imagines it could become a part of the city’s regular sewer inspection program. the benefits are obvious: when you reduce the volume of groundwater entering the sewer, less wastewater goes to the water pollution control plant for treatment, saving on energy, chemical usage and equipment run time.

“that translates to a reduction in maintenance and operational costs,” warywoda says.

the pipes, which are variously made of concrete, plastic, clay, steel, asbestos-cement and wood stave, are on average more than 50 years old and are susceptible to damage and deterioration.

“tree roots can get into the cracks in pipes or between pipe joints,” warywoda says. “pipes can also become misaligned or crack from movement of soils around them.”

research in action highlights the work of 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 in various fields of research.

soon-to-be 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 graduate receiving this year’s robert poulin award for her work with young people

photo of nicole costanzo

nicole costanzo is the recipient of this year’s robert poulin award, presented to a full-time 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 student for their outstanding citizenship.

nicole, who will graduate this year with an honours bachelor of science, made many contributions during her time at lakehead – to the university and to thunder bay. during much of her time at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 , nicole was an instructor with superior science.

“working with superior science has been an amazing experience,” she said.

“it taught me how to effectively work with a team to highlight each other’s strengths and work towards a common goal. the best part was being able to inspire local youth and introduce them to different fields of science in a hands-on way that they can’t get in a normal classroom.”

superior science encourages campers to pursue science as a career, and makes them more interested in education and learning in general, nicole said.

“children are so smart already and full of ideas and energy, so being able to encourage their scientific thinking and help them find what fields of science interest them was very rewarding,” she said.

superior science lessons and activities not only focus on important concepts of science, but also on creativity and innovation that allows campers to do their own exploring.

“the best lessons are the ones that incorporate multiple fields of science,” nicole said. “one example that comes to mind was a revolving solar system. with this activity, we integrated lessons about space science, motor mechanics, types of motion, and electricity.”

she has also served as the coordinator of girls club, for those in grades 2 to 7. offered through superior science, girls club meets monthly through zoom due to the global pandemic.

“a fun lesson i did with girls club was learning about chemistry, including properties of matter, types of mixtures, and acids and bases,” nicole said.

the girls made bath bombs with personalized scents and colours, juice crystal lip balm, and hand sanitizer – while learning the science behind why bath bombs fizz, how mixtures are made, and how hand sanitizer kills bacteria. the girls also learn about science by dissecting animals.

“these hands-on experiences are a great way for kids to learn how science can explain the things we see around us, and how many unique areas there are to explore,” nicole said.

because girls club recognizes how important it is for girls to have female role models, they also discussed margaret hamilton, a computer scientist whose written code helped humanity take its first steps on the moon.

“including stories like this helps the girls to picture themselves being involved in revolutionary science in their future, which is ultimately our goal,” nicole said.

as an instructor she travelled to terrace bay to deliver superior science programming at an elementary school.

“that year our staff also visited red rock schools to deliver programming we developed,” nicole said.

since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic, superior science has used an online outreach platform to connect with schools in thunder bay, dryden, atikokan, and nipigon.

science has been an important part of nicole’s life. she said being a woman in stem has helped shape her identity and career goals.

“having the privilege to study science at a post-secondary level has made me appreciate my education and has inspired me to pursue a career that involves life-long learning,” she said.

“this has also helped me to better understand the world around me and form my own opinions on current events.”

beyond standard class content, studying science at lakehead has taught nicole many important life skills such as critical thinking, communication and resiliency.

“my time at lakehead has been some of the best years of my life. while of course there have been many challenges, overall it has been an incredibly rewarding experience.

“throughout my undergrad, i have learned so much in a short period of time and it has truly gone by in the blink of an eye,” she said.

one of her favourite opportunities at lakehead was receiving hands-on experience in labs.

“this was a great way to solidify my learning in various courses, and also led me to working in the research lab i am in now,” she said.

“lakehead’s focus on experiential learning has given me a well-rounded education and prepared me very well for the future.

“being part of student clubs like the biology association, applied life sciences club, and food security club has been complimentary to my learning and has given me a sense of belonging and community on campus,” she said.

nicole plans to pursue a career in medicine and hopes to one day work as a physician in northern ontario.

since 1952, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 has presented the robert poulin award each year to a full-time graduate or undergraduate student selected by their fellows, the faculty and administration, for contributing most to the welfare of the university through student activities.

lakehead named the robert poulin award after an outstanding forestry graduate from the lakehead technical institute who died at the age of 20 due to an explosion that occurred on a dredge in the kaministiquia river.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 in top 100 of times higher education impact rankings for second time

the image

april 23, 2021 – thunder bay and orillia, ont.

for the second year in a row, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 has placed in the top 100 of the times higher education impact rankings.

the times higher education impact rankings measure the societal impact of universities by evaluating an institutions’ success in delivering the united nations’ sustainable development goals. the rankings measure the impact universities make to the world in the areas of poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice.

lakehead finished 99th out of 1,115 universities from around the world, based on its performance in meeting the united nations’ 17 sustainable development goals (sdgs).

dr. moira mcpherson, lakehead’s president and vice-chancellor, said she was proud that lakehead ranked so highly for the second year in a row.

“we’re excited that lakehead remained in the top 100 even with nearly 350 more universities being included in this year’s ranking as compared to last year,” dr. mcpherson said.

lakehead is the only primarily undergraduate university in canada that participated in the 2021 impact rankings and one of only 26 universities from north america to be included in the top 100. the university was among just 260 universities from around the world that qualified to participate in all 17 sdgs.

ranking ahead of several top comprehensive and research-intensive canadian universities, lakehead scored highly across many sdgs, including a top 10 ranking in sdg 15: life on land.

the life on land sdg evaluates how universities support land ecosystems through education and action, how they contribute to sustainably managing forests, combating desertification, halting and reversing land degradation, and how they halt biodiversity loss by measuring their research on land ecosystems.

this year’s top 10 spot in sdg 15 recognizes the work of lakehead researchers on life on land, as well as education about, and support for, land ecosystems. lakehead’s policies and procedures relating to land-sensitive waste disposal, such as its commitment to reducing plastic waste on campus, contributed to its top 10 ranking.

lakehead also scored highly on other metrics, including a top 20 ranking in life below water, a top 30 ranking in no poverty and zero hunger, and a top 40 ranking for reduced inequalities and clean water and sanitation.

“to be in the top 100 globally – and top 40 on a number of goals – demonstrates the significant work accomplished by lakehead 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , faculty, and staff to contribute to solving the grand challenges facing the world today through education, research and partnerships,” added dr. mcpherson. “it also shows what we already know – that lakehead offers one of the best educational experiences in the world.”

dr. david barnett, lakehead’s provost and vice-president (academic), agreed.

“this ranking is also due to lakehead university’s longstanding commitment to indigenous learners and communities, which helps us succeed and lead with regards to sustainability and social justice,” dr. barnett said.

“as our university community continues to make these sdgs a priority, we once again see how lakehead is world-class. 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , faculty, staff and alumni should be proud of this exceptional accomplishment.”

the times higher education impact rankings capture qualifying universities’ impact on society and align with commitments in lakehead’s strategic and academic plans.

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s board of governors announces plan to divest from fossil fuel holdings

november 26, 2020 – thunder bay and orillia, ont.

at its november 26, 2020 meeting, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s board of governors approved a motion that will see the institution divest from its fossil fuel holdings by the end of the university’s current strategic plan in 2023.

“our decision to divest from fossil fuel companies reflects lakehead’s goal of becoming a leader in sustainability as reflected throughout our current strategic plan and sustainability action plan,” said board of governors chair angela maltese. “this move is consistent with our commitment to addressing environmental sustainability and climate change.”

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 president and vice-chancellor dr. moira mcpherson applauded the board’s decision, which follows extensive consultation with outside experts and with input from the university community.

“阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 has a responsibility to be pro-active in facing the challenges associated with climate change through education, research, and its investments,” dr. mcpherson said. “i am especially proud of our 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , who continue to show their commitment and leadership to addressing this global issue.”

responsible investing nurtures the world’s transition away from the reliance on carbon-based economies by moving funds and investments to sectors and technologies that offer more sustainable options.

maltese explained that while the divestment process is complex, the board and the university will fulfill its commitment while adhering to their legal and fiduciary responsibilities to mitigate the potential costs for exiting funds that contain fossil fuel holdings.

maltese added that, “while our investment portfolio’s current fossil fuel exposure is a little over 2%, it will still take time to divest properly so that our investment earnings are not impacted.”

lakehead’s divestment strategy will be guided by its responsible investment policy, a document that affirms the university’s commitment to responsible investing through consideration of environmental, social, and governance factors as set out in the united nations principles for responsible investing.

the event, which is co-sponsored by the university’s office of indigenous initiatives and the thunder bay public library, celebrates the recent publication of simpson’s latest novel noopiming: the cure for white ladies (anansi, september 2020).

simpson will speak for 20-30 minutes, followed by a q&a session. members of the public who wish to pre-register and pose questions for the author are asked to use a form at the following link: https://forms.gle/jj2xjwusb4wfqegc9

the link to the zoom webinar event is: https://lakeheadu.zoom.us/j/91093260928

about the author

leanne betasamosake simpson is a michi saagiig nishnaabeg writer, scholar, and musician, and a member of alderville first nation.

she is the author of five previous books, including this accident of being lost, which won the macewan book of the year and the peterborough arts award for outstanding achievement by an indigenous author; was a finalist for the rogers writers’ trust fiction prize and the trillium book award; was longlisted for cbc canada reads; and was named a best book of the year by the globe and mail, national post, and quill & quire. she has released two albums, including f(l)ight, which is a companion piece to this accident of being lost.

about the book

award-winning nishnaabeg storyteller and writer leanne betasamosake simpson returns with a bold reimagination of the novel, one that combines narrative and poetic fragments through a careful and fierce reclamation of anishinaabe aesthetics.

mashkawaji (they/them) lies frozen in the ice, remembering a long-ago time of hopeless connection and now finding freedom and solace in isolated suspension. they introduce us to the seven main characters: akiwenzii, the old man who represents the narrator’s will; ninaatig, the maple tree who represents their lungs; mindimooyenh, the old woman who represents their conscience; sabe, the giant who represents their marrow; adik, the caribou who represents their nervous system; asin, the human who represents their eyes and ears; and lucy, the human who represents their brain. each attempts to commune with the unnatural urban-settler world, a world of spongebob band-aids, ziploc baggies, fjällräven kånken backpacks, and coffee mugs emblazoned with institutional logos. and each searches out the natural world, only to discover those pockets that still exist are owned, contained, counted, and consumed. cut off from nature, the characters are cut off from their natural selves.

noopiming is anishinaabemowin for “in the bush,” and the title is a response to english canadian settler and author susanna moodie’s 1852 memoir roughing it in the bush. to read simpson’s work is an act of decolonization, degentrification, and willful resistance to the perpetuation and dissemination of centuries-old colonial myth-making. it is a lived experience. it is a breaking open of the self to a world alive with people, animals, ancestors, and spirits, who are all busy with the daily labours of healing — healing not only themselves, but their individual pieces of the network, of the web that connects them all together. enter and be changed.
