阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜

sister alice is saying goodbye to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜

after 30 years as chaplain, sister alice greer will say goodbye to 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 at the end of june.

when she started at the university in june of 1990, sister alice decided the best way to introduce herself to faculty, staff, and 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 was by doing “walkabouts.”

“i had many casual conversations during my daily walkabouts. i also dropped by offices, the cafeteria, the faculty lounge, the library and the agora to engage in conversations and participate in activities,” she said.

“i was fortunate that i knew a few of the university professors because i received my undergrad degree (in psychology) at lakehead.”

sister alice also earned a master in education (curriculum) from central michigan university and a doctor of education (administration) at the university of toronto.

she said the covid-19 pandemic has allowed her to get “wonderfully creative” to end her 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 career in a similar fashion to the way it started – with a different version of “walkabouts.”

“telephone conversations have been one-to-one as well as some group connections, zoom and facetime calls have also taken place, and a number of emails have been sent and have arrived,” she said.

“i believe it’s important to do what we can with the resources we have. in many ways, that has been my life experience – thanks to a solid teaching from my parents.”

sister alice remembers attending mass in the avila chapel on sunday nights when she was a teenager, long before she worked at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“the sisters of st. joseph, the religious congregation that i am now a member of, had a coffeehouse after mass – where a large group of us enjoyed staying around and chatting,” she said.

“i recall thinking that i would like to be part of all that sort of activity; little did i know at age 17 or 18 that one day i would be the chaplain at the university and be the person who organized the mass and gatherings after mass.”

sister alice said 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 were usually eager to find ways to help those who did not have as much as they did.

“as a result, we started a special cash collection to buy socks for the people who went for meals at st. andrew’s dew drop inn. for years, we were able to collect enough to buy 200 pairs of socks yearly.

“as well, over the years we have bought hundreds of cans of coffee for the dew drop inn.”

sister alice also started a program called keep a friend warm, inspired by a student who needed assistance.

“years ago, on a cold and snowy winter morning, a student came to mass at avila chapel; he was cold because he did not have a hat or mitts,” she said.

sister alice sent out a notice to the university community asking for winter mitts, hats and scarves.

“the response was phenomenal,” she said. staff, faculty, and 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 dropped off new along with gently used and homemade knitted items.

“these were all placed on a table in the agora and those who needed them were welcome to take whatever they required,” sister alice said.

she found that it was sometimes challenging to pull resources together to help 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 when she first started at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“usually it was just a matter of making the right connection, timing and energy in order to overcome the challenge,” she said. “as years went by and resources developed, we met challenges with teamwork.”

sister alice has served the university as spiritual, personal and grief mentor, companion and guide.

each memorial service that she organized on campus, usually at avila chapel, brought the university community together to remember the heart and soul of individuals who had passed away. sister alice also organized the annual remembrance day ceremonies.

“when i planned our yearly remembrance day service, i did so with a view to remind each of us that today’s freedoms and privileges are as a result of many courageous people, some who went before us and others who continue to serve,” she said.

over the past 20 years, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 in lakehead’s faculty of education who wished to teach in catholic schools have attended a pastoral letter program that sister alice developed. 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 who completed the program received a pastoral letter that would become their first step in applying for employment.

for convocation, sister alice wrote a different invocation for each of the 30 years of convocations that she attended, because she realized that each student and graduating class was unique.

she was also on the negotiating team when her congregation – the sisters of st. joseph of sault ste. marie – sold avila to the university in 1993.

the sisters donated the chapel and its entrance to the university. a plaque outside the front door recognizes the donation, stating the desire for the chapel to remain as a place of worship.

“during times in our lives when things may seem unsettled, when we need a quiet spot or want to pray and be assured of peace, then avila chapel is such a place,” sister alice said.

once she leaves thunder bay, sister alice knows she will miss seeing her colleagues and lakehead’s 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 .

“i will also miss those times when i have been called to be with someone when life is close to ending or death has already occurred,” she said.

“these have been the times that i know that i am on ‘holy ground.’ i am especially grateful for the honour of being with others when they or their loved ones are at the threshold between earth and heaven.”

she will also miss thunder bay, her scenic hometown. this is also where her brother and two sisters live.

“i wish to thank all those who have supported and encouraged me over the past 30 years,” she said.

“there are just too many to name. being the chaplain at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 has brought many blessings, without measure, into my life and i hope the same applies to those whose lives i encountered. may god’s gentle and compassionate care be a daily visitor for all. abundant blessings.”

in place of a farewell gathering, sister alice invites you to make a donation to the dew drop inn.

lakehead professors awarded $500,000 for important research

 may 28, 2020 – thunder bay, ont.

two 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 professors have been awarded $250,000 each from the federal new frontiers in research fund – exploration to pursue important work that will benefit canada and beyond.

photo of dr. zubair fadlullah

dr. zubair fadlullah, associate professor in computer science and research chair at the thunder bay regional health research institute, is receiving $250,000 over two years to investigate the use of drones to address the lack of reliable internet access and health-care connectivity in rural areas in northern ontario.

the aim of this research is to address both the urban-rural digital and health-care gaps in an interdisciplinary manner.

“connectivity is a key enabler for providing smart health care by monitoring and managing physical/mental health conditions and addiction trends,” dr. fadlullah wrote in his research proposal.

to tackle the digital divide issue, this research will use a robust communication infrastructure by leveraging unmanned aerial vehicles such as drones, equipped with communication and energy harvesting modules as well as robotic arms, to form an agile network.

to address the healthcare gap in northern ontario, the drone-aided network, coupled with cost-effective device-to-device relays composed of smartphones, will offload the health data collected by internet of things and wearable devices deployed at the remote communities.

dr. fadlullah will carry out the research at two locations: the preliminary research investigation and experiment will occur at a 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 research lab and the field experiment will be carried out at one of the keewaytinook okimakanak first nations communities.

he will work with co-principal investigator dr. vijay mago, an associate professor in computer science at lakehead who is assisting with data analytics, and with co-applicant keewaytinook okimakanak ehealth telemedicine, which will provide insight as they work toward implementing a successful solution.

photo of dr. maryam ebrahimi

dr. maryam ebrahimi, assistant professor in chemistry and tier 2 canada research chair in low-dimensional nanomaterials, is receiving $250,000 over two years to address the enduring mystery of life’s origin in the cosmos.

in collaboration with her co-applicants at the technical university of munich, dr. ebrahimi and her team will study the peptide bonds formation from non-amino acid reactants under ultra-high vacuum (uhv) conditions, which resembles outer space.

“if peptide bonds are formed from a non-amino acid pathway under controlled uhv conditions, can amino acids still be assigned as the unique evolutionary path of the origin of life?” dr. ebrahimi wrote in her research proposal. this question frames her motivation for the project.

in her newly established nanoscale science laboratory, her team will investigate the on-surface reactions of suitable reactants, identified in an interstellar medium, for the synthesis of peptide bonds.

“this project will have a critical impact on our understanding of the origin of life in extraterrestrial environments.” dr. ebrahimi emphasized.

“congratulations to drs. ebrahimi and fadlullah for receiving these grants and thank you to the government of canada for recognizing the important work of our researchers,” said dr. andrew p. dean, lakehead’s vice-president, research and innovation.

new frontiers in research is a highly competitive tri-agency program designed to support groundbreaking interdisciplinary research.

in 2019/20, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 will receive nearly $2 million in assistance from the research support fund to support the indirect costs of research, which includes costs for supporting the management of intellectual property, research and administration, ethics and regulatory compliance, research resources, and research facilities.

team of canadian and italian researchers breaking new ground in materials science

may 20, 2020 – thunder bay, ont.

a team of researchers from canada and italy recently published a paper in nature materials journal that could usher in a revolutionary development in materials science, leading to big changes in the way companies create modern electronics.

the goal was to develop two-dimensional materials, which are a single atomic layer thick, with added functionality to extend the revolutionary developments in materials science that started with the discovery of graphene in 2004.

in total, 19 authors worked on this paper from inrs, mcgill, lakehead, and consiglio nazionale delle ricerche, the national research council in italy.

“this work represents an exciting development in the realization of functional two-dimensional materials beyond graphene,” said dr. mark gallagher, a physics professor at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 .

“i found it particularly rewarding to participate in this collaboration, which allowed us to combine our expertise in organic chemistry, condensed matter physics, and materials science to achieve our goals.”

dr. dmytro perepichka, a professor and chair of chemistry at mcgill university, said they have been working on this research for a long time.

“structurally reconfigurable two-dimensional conjugated polymers can give a new breadth to applications of two-dimensional materials in electronics,” dr. perepichka said.

“we started dreaming of them more than 15 years ago. it’s only through this four-way collaboration, across the country and between the continents, that this dream has become the reality.”

dr. federico rosei, a professor at the Énergie matériaux télécommunications research centre of the institut national de la recherche scientifique (inrs) in varennes who holds the canada research chair in nanostructured materials since 2016, said they are excited about the results of this collaboration.

“these results provide new insights into mechanisms of surface reactions at a fundamental level and simultaneously yield a novel material with outstanding properties, whose existence had only been predicted theoretically until now,” he said.

this work opens exciting new directions, both theoretical and experimental. the integration of this system into a device (e.g. transistors) may lead to outstanding performances. in addition, these results will foster more studies on a wide range of two-dimensional conjugated polymers with different lattice symmetries, thereby gaining further insights into the structure vs. properties of these systems.

the italian/canadian team demonstrated the synthesis of large-scale two-dimensional conjugated polymers, also thoroughly characterizing their electronic properties. they achieved success by combining the complementary expertise of organic chemists and surface scientists.

this research was partially supported by a project grande rilevanza italy-quebec of the italian ministero degli affari esteri e della cooperazione internazionale (maeci), direzione generale per la promozione del sistema paese, individual nserc discovery grants (m.g., d.f.p. and f.r.), an frqnt team grant (d.f.p. and f.r.) and by the us army research office single investigator grant (d.f.p.). dr. rosei is also grateful to the canada research chairs program for funding and partial salary support.

state of emergency will benefit ontario’s wildlife, lakehead professor says

photo of a bunny

by brandon walker

a 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 professor believes ontario premier doug ford’s decision to extend the state of emergency until may 12 will be beneficial for wildlife and the environment.

photo of dr. brian mclaren

dr. brian mclaren, associate professor in natural resources management, said the month of may is a sensitive time for animals. “birds are returning to their breeding territories, turtles and other wildlife are making their nests to lay eggs or raise their young in, and the final snowmelt is sending surges into our streams that launch the new season for the aquatic ecosystem.”

dr. mclaren said there are several reasons the state of emergency will help animals.

“having fewer cars out means fewer roadkill mortalities for the new parents and the dispersing juveniles,” he said. “having fewer people out and their dogs and cats closer to home mean less disturbance to our forests, grasslands and waterways and less stress to the breeding populations.”

he believes animals that have adapted to living in cities will benefit the most.

“in northern ontario, we host many of the migrating warblers that will find new sanctuaries in our urban areas and provincial parks,” dr. mclaren said. “these include some threatened species like the canada warbler, which bears our country's name around the world.

“the nesting success of all of those migrants from central and south america should be much higher this year, especially in urban areas and crowded southern ontario provincial parks.”

this shutdown not only keeps cars and people at home, it also gives animals some much needed quiet time.

“animals born last year are eager to disperse to find their own territories, their own mates. to do this in, shall i say privacy, is a nice change due to the restrictions on us,” he said.

fish will also benefit, dr. mclaren said.

“people fish with a vengeance and love their trophies. that is why at best we use slot restrictions, one fish above a certain length,” he said.

“these bigger fish are contributors to the future generation some 10 to 10,000 times what the smaller fish contribute. so, if we practice catch and release of the big ones, we're doing well. i hope we all will make this change if we go out this year to do some fishing.”

from an environmental perspective, dr. mclaren said the world be much better off if companies allowed more employees to work from home.

“please do your part now for society by staying home safe and put some thought into the future for the environment.”

阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and nosm collect ppe for frontline healthcare workers in thunder bay, throughout northern ontario, and orillia

april 9, 2020 – thunder bay and orillia, ont.

representatives from 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and the northern ontario school of medicine (nosm) have collected hundreds of boxes of personal protective equipment (ppe) for health care providers in thunder bay, throughout northern ontario, and orillia – to help alleviate a shortage caused by the covid-19 pandemic.

at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 the collection began when researchers started asking anne klymenko, director of the office of research services, where they could drop-off essential ppe for the hospital.

with the help of office of research services volunteers, klymenko coordinated the collection of ppe on-campus.

she was eventually connected with phillip thompson, regional manager, distribution and data management, procurement department at thunder bay regional health sciences centre, st. joseph’s hospital and the northern supply chain, who work together to ensure essential ppe is distributed to hospitals and clinics where supplies are needed most.

after hearing the need, 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 ’s office of research services issued a call to action to all university and nosm researchers and laboratories requesting essential ppe, a collection that was also started at lakehead orillia.

klymenko said the response from the university community was overwhelming and heartwarming.

“we were able to collect over 820 n95 masks that are in extremely short supply right now and essential to the safety of frontline healthcare workers and clinicians,” she said.

“we also received more than 1,750 surgical, procedural masks and disposable face shields, 325 disposable gowns, and sanitizer.  all this was collected on short notice on march 27 and march 30.”

in addition to nosm, donations were received from all over campus – including departments in the faculty of natural resources management, faculty of science and environmental studies, and the faculty of health and behavioural sciences.

all items will go to the thunder bay regional health sciences centre and st. joseph’s care group who work with the northern supply chain to ensure these essential ppe get sent to those acute-care hospitals, long-term care homes, and healthcare providers experiencing urgent shortages of ppe.

“supplies are vital to our hospital's response to the covid-19 pandemic,” said dr. stewart kennedy, incident manager for thunder bay regional health sciences centre's covid-19 response.

“we are very grateful to our partners at 阿根廷vs墨西哥竞猜 and nosm for coming together and collecting donations. their efforts will save lives and allow our health care professionals to focus on providing safe, quality care.”

dr. andrew dean, lakehead’s vice-president, research and innovation, is challenging other businesses and organizations in thunder bay, northern ontario and orillia to do what they can to help.

“please look through your surplus ppe inventories to continue the momentum.  donations big and small are critical to have available in our communities in the next few weeks,” dr. dean said.

donations can be made to the northern ontario ppe for hcp campaign (#ppeforhcps), an initiative led by nosm 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 who were encouraged by the ontario medical 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 association (omsa) and the ontario medical association (oma) to take up the cause by approaching local businesses to see if they had anything to contribute.

“the #ppeforhcps is rising to the challenge of sourcing personal protective equipment from over 28 communities and counting,” said alannah maclean, a second-year nosm medical student in thunder bay. the objective is to divert existing ppe within a community to the institutions (i.e. hospitals and clinics) that currently need it most.

maclean said maranda henry and jane luft have done an incredible job leading and organizing their volunteers.

the nosm student campaign differs from campaigns in southern ontario, as the 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 are working to cover more than just the major cities.

the northern ontario school of medicine faces the extreme challenge of having a distributed campus that encompasses the entirety of northern ontario—over 800,000 km². they have received contributions from several organizations and businesses.

“in thunder bay, magnus theatre, superior nails, an anonymous dental clinic, tbt engineering, and hamm home rehab have all contributed to our ppe campaign,” maclean said.

“as part of our fundraising campaign to support manufacturing and operating costs for ppe production, we received a $1,000 donation from domtar corporation in dryden. domtar also donated an additional $4,000 directly to the hospitals in thunder bay, sioux lookout, dryden, and red lake,” she added.

dr. sarita verma, nosm’s dean, president and ceo, said she is impressed with the work her 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 have been doing.

“the hard work and advocacy i’m witnessing from our medical 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 is creating such terrific momentum,” dr. verma said. “i’m inspired by their initiative and social responsibility and proud of how they are stepping up to support their colleagues on the frontlines.”

if any businesses or individuals in northern ontario would like to make a financial contribution or donate ppe, please reach out to nosm 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 using northernontarioppeforhcp@gmail.com

in orillia, rebecca heffernan, research and strategic initiatives facilitator, collected around 4,000 pairs of gloves from sustainability sciences that will go to the orillia soldiers’ memorial hospital.

“it was definitely nice to see everyone pulling together to help our community during such trying times,” heffernan said. “having donated to the hospital directly will ensure that we are putting the much-needed ppe into the hands of our frontline healthcare workers.”

dr. sree kurissery, chair of sustainability sciences, said she is hopeful that life will return to normal sometime soon.

“i hope the world finds peace soon and humanity wins the battle against this disease. everyone, stay safe and healthy.”

congratulations to dr. sarah jacoba and dr. evgeny chugunov, who each received a teaching innovation award at the december 2, 2019 senate meeting.

photo of dr. jacoba receiving her award.

dr. sarah jacoba, assistant professor in the department of languages, was nominated for her integration of social and digital media in her french courses. 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 in her literature course on representations of the body, for instance, maintained a weekly tumblr blog in which they examined non-normative images.

in doing so, they went beyond traditional writing assignments to become producers of online content. in her stylistics and composition course, according to the department chair, dr. jacoba “departed from a more traditional approach, opting instead to offer more current, real-world, technology-based equivalents of assignments.” in her french oral skills, 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 were asked to not only prepare a cover letter and cv but to create a linkedin page.

particularly successful was her selfie assignment in which 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 used the google arts and culture app, which matched their selfies with a face in a painting. they were then asked to write a creative assignment based on the match. 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 particularly praise this assignment for its creativity and for generating student interest and engagement. her 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 commend her for her innovation in developing relevant and engaging assignments. as one student writes, dr. jacoba uses “original and engaging” methods “to teach the conventional writing process and study of literature.” as another student writes, “her innovative style helped me to be a successful student.”

photo of dr. chugonov receiving his award.

dr. evgeny chugunov, assistant professor in the department of music, was nominated for his development and introduction of an interactive master class into his piano instruction. as dr. chugunov describes, the interactive master class is “an essential addition to individual piano lessons, allowing a student to break out of the traditional isolation, interact with other music-loving 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 , share piano literature, and acquire a valuable set of essential professional skills.”

it helps to create a learning community, and helps 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 to develop their “critical thinking and understanding in a practical setting.” in addition to helping 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 develop their artistic abilities, the interactive master class “develops 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 ’ pedagogical skills, which are especially important since most 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 will become piano teachers.”

as one student notes, the interactive master class allows 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 “opportunity in both the performance area and in refining our teaching skills. i love teaching, and i value the chance these masterclasses give me to further develop as an artist and teacher.” a prominent music teacher also commends dr. chugunov’s innovation, noting that it “opens up opportunities for 世界杯2022赛程表淘汰赛 and teachers to present and discuss what interests them in the areas of piano pedagogy and technique, which results in the development of confidence in teaching and artistry.”
